1 The PresCryterian Volume 14, Issue 12 SUNDAY WORSHIP Every Sunday 10:30a.m. OFFICE HOURS M-Th 9am-12:30pm CHURCH STAFF Rev. Craig R. Gibson, Pastor Rob Mance, Choir Dir Andrew Morris, Organist Vonda Norman, Adm. Assistant The next issue of the PresCryterian will be published on December 28th. Please submit your materials by December 26th for inclusion in the next PresCryterian Giving of Ourselves and Caring for one another. Shawnee Prescryterian Church Worships, Learns & Serves our needy world together. Isaiah 9:1-7 December 2016 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. 4 For as in the day of Midian s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. 5 Every warrior s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. When Advent comes upon us each year this passage soon comes to mind. I believe this year is especially appropriate to focus on these words. This passage was not written to address an election or endorse any politician, instead these are prophetic word from Isaiah speaking of the greatest one to come. These words are to help us prepare for Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Holy One to be found in a lowly manger. I hear very little from our national leaders about them following one greater than they are. Let us not become more distressed about the political distress around us. Let us instead live as we should live, follow the Triune God we know and love, and share the Good News that Christ has come and Christ will come again. During this holy season of preparation let us do as we have always been called to do, love your neighbor after first loving your God. Then we will be able to walk through Advent searching for the Prince of Peace. Certainly this one of grace, mercy and forgiveness is needed now as always. Happy Advent! Let us walk together in hope, peace, joy, and love. In Ministry Together, Pastor Craig
