Pastor Sara and I were trying to reduce some of the excess stuff in our house and were going through the hundreds of books from when our girls were little. We boxed up bunches of them to give away.

2 From the Pastor.... We will be starting a new year of Sunday School on Sept. 9, and Confirmation classes on Sept. 5. Why do we do this? Well there are a million good reasons, but this last week I saw and heard one of the best. Pastor Sara and I were trying to reduce some of the excess stuff in our house and were going through the hundreds of books from when our girls were little. We boxed up bunches of them to give away. (Don t worry we kept plenty in case we ever have grandchildren.) Thus the day before school started we drove into the little circle drive by the school office so Sara could go in to give some of the books to the school library. As she got out she stopped and asked me, Do you hear that? Four or five small children were playing on the tire swings an as they swung they were singing loud and clear Jesus loves me. It was beautiful, and I m pretty sure I know where they learned that song? I m willing to bet it was taught to them at Sunday School just like the Bible stories were taught to them. The stories of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the adventures of Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Elijah, and David, the words and deeds of John the Baptist, Peter, and Paul, and of course our Lord Jesus are taught over and over and like the song at length they stick. The song stuck in those kids heads and hearts so that it was with them wherever they were, even swinging in the playground. So also the message of the Bible is meant to stick with them wherever they go. That s why we have Sunday School, so that young and old we all remember that one great truth: Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Sunday School is a very important part of what we do as a church. Go out of your way and thank those who teach or help, those who make this ministry of our parish possible. May God bless us with another year of learning his Word. Pastor Terrill * * * * * * * * * * * * * Interested in Joining Our Parish? One of the great blessings for any congregation is when new folks come and join them. We have been blessed to have others who have come to our community join us in hearing and sharing the Word of our Lord and receiving his gifts. We look forward to continuing to have new people bring new life to our churches. Every fall we set aside a Sunday to officially receive new members at First, Lake City, or Pleasant Valley. This fall we are planning to do that on Nov. 3 and 4 at any of the worship services. For those who do not have a Lutheran background we ll also have a couple of times for information meetings to give you a broad understanding of Lutheran teachings and to answer any questions they may have. We ll also explain how our congregations work together as a parish and talk about the opportunities for worship and service. If you are not a member and would be interested in joining or would just like to have some questions answered we invite you to join us for these meetings. If you know someone who might be interested please invite them. The Information Meetings will be: 10:30am Sunday Oct. 21 and 6:30pm Wednesday Oct. 24 at First 2

3 Brown Bag Bible Study What Are Hymns For? Starts Wednesday Sept. 12 Noon What s your favorite hymn? We all have those hymns we like to sing, carols at Christmas, hymns that we remember from special occasions like baptisms or funerals, or even weddings. But did you know that there was practically no congregational singing in church until the 1500s. People singing hymns as part of the worship service was one of the reforms that took place with the Protestant Reformation. The purpose of hymn singing wasn t just to fill time and give worshippers something to do. It was to teach the faith, and convey important theological truths in a way that made them memorable and stuck in people s minds, just like a tune on the radio can get stuck in your head. For our Brown Bag Bible Study we are going to take a closer look at some of our hymns and see what they are teaching and preaching to us. On Wednesdays starting Sept. 12 at Noon we will be looking at these aspects of some familiar hymns: How they speak of the Biblical message. How they teach theological concepts. Background story on some famous hymns. We invite you to come and join us as we dig into the depths of hymns. Bring a lunch with you and bring your voice we might be doing a little singing too. Please feel free to invite a friend. Men of First September 16 6:00pm Fall Bazaar Planning Meeting September 26 2:00pm Fellowship Hall ANIMAL BLESSING SUNDAY Among the many blessings that God has given us are the animals that are part of the world we live in. We are blessed with food and fiber from the livestock that also contribute to our economic well-being. We are given to see the wonders of the wildlife that share this land with us, and we are blessed with the companionship of our pets. In the tradition started by St. Francis of Assisi we will have a blessing of the animals at all our worship services on Oct. 6 & 7. Those animals that will be alright coming into the churches are welcome to do so. For those animals that will be better off outside w will bless them out there at the beginning of the service. Come and join us as we give thanks for the creatures around us. WOMEN OF FIRST The FL Women of First will hold a fall rummage sale on Friday, September 28 from noon until 5:00 p.m. Items accepted are: fall and winter clothing and decorations, toys, bedding, curtains, rugs, dishes and other kitchenware, shoes, purses, and books. Please make sure all items are clean and free of pet hair. Also, we will not accept furniture, computers, printers, old heavy TVs. Please do not bring any personalized items or books that have been written in. We gladly invite anyone to join us the day of the sale to help set-up, work the sale, or pack up the leftovers. A bazaar meeting for is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26 at 2:00 in fellowship fall. All chairmen and co-chairs are encouraged to attend. The bazaar is set for Thursday, November 15. Corrine Zorn reported for mission community that she has new cards on display and is running a special of $5.00 per box. The church has been sprayed for bugs at the cost of $150.75.

4 PVW PVW met Saturday, August 18th with seven members present. Jane Hansen served as hostess and led devotions. Shirley Arneson reported for Mission Action that we have 27 quilts on hand; she also showed us the center panel that will be used for our raffle quilt. Corrine Zorn reported for mission community that she has new cards on display and is running a special of $5.00 per box. The church has been sprayed for bugs at the cost of $ The fall dinner will be held on October 21st. The menu will again be hot dish, salad, dessert and buns. Worship will be at 10:00am that morning followed by the dinner at 11:00am. Raffle tickets and dinner slips will be ready by the end of September. Anyone having raffle items to donate, contact Jane or Bonita. Next meeting November 17th at 9:30am with Tammy Bergh as hostess. A Legacy of Faith National Grandparents Day became an official observance in 1978, thanks largely to the lobbying efforts of Marian McQuade, a West Virginian who had 15 children and 43 grandchildren during 60 years of marriage. The purpose of National Grandparents Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, is threefold: to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children s children and to help children become aware of strength, information and guidance older people can offer. Grandparents and, in this mobile society, surrogate grandparents also serve as examples of how to endure challenges with God s help. Elders describe how God remains present, faithful and steadfast throughout the years. As Psalm 145:4 (NIV) says, One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. Mission Action Pleasant Valley quilters will meet on Wednesday, September 12 at 9:00 am at the Havana Café. Twelve First Lutheran quilters met August 20th. They tied eight quilts, pinned nine, sewed eight and laid out 15. On August 22, they boxed 72. They will gather again on Monday, September 17. 4
