1 PARTNERS weekly newsletter Dear Friends, 23 September Trinity 17 Our passage from Mark this weeks demonstrates how difficult it was for the disciples to follow Jesus. We find them caught up in their constant struggle for personal success. Jesus challenges them about why they were arguing and they are embarrassed at their personal ambitions. However it is not wrong for believers to be ambitious. What is wrong is when ambition and personal gains becomes the most important things in an individual s life. Jesus demonstrates that to be welcomed into the Kingdom we need to value children. Now in the society of Jesus this really not considered. In the Victorian times children had to be seen and not heard. In Jesus time children were second class citizens; in this passage Jesus is again challenging social norms and saying that children are as important as men!! I wonder what the disciples thought about that? When I struggle to understand a passage in the Bible, I am encouraged when I read that the disciples who were walking beside Jesus struggled as well. Because if that I reflect to one of the greatest philosophers of all time Winne the Pooh!! On confidence The things that make me different are the things that make me. On modesty It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like 'What about lunch?' On attitude Sometimes the smallest things take the most room in your heart. On self worth You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. 2 READINGS - for you to use today and during the week 23 September 2018 Trinity 17 COLLECT: Gracious God, you call us to fullness of life: deliver us from unbelief and banish our anxieties with the liberating love of Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. PSALM 1 (For Morning Prayer) 1. Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, Nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! 2. Their delight is in the law of the Lord, And they meditate on his law day and night. 3. They are like trees planted by streams of water, Bearing fruit in due season, 4. With leaves that do not wither; Everything they do shall prosper. 5. It is not so with the wicked: they are like chaff which the wind blows away; 6. Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgement comes, Nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.
3 A Reading from the Letter of James James 3:13-4:3,7-8a Wisdom is shown in peaceable living, based on God's gift of grace. 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15 Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16 For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. 4:1 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? 2 You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. At the end, the Reader says: For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL READING Please stand and turn to face the Gospel Reader When the Gospel is announced, the Reader says: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. (Glory be to thee, O Lord.)
4 Mark 9:30-37 Jesus speaks of God's wisdom shown in simplicity. After leaving the mountain 30 Jesus and his disciples went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again. 32 But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. 33 Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about on the way? 34 But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. 35 He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all. 36 Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, 37 Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me. At the end, the Reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (At the end, the Reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.) (c) New Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible. POST COMMUNION PRAYER: Lord, we pray that your grace may always precede and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. EMERGENCY PRAYER CHAIN : Please send all requests for prayer to prayer@avp-benefice.org.uk. 6 FORDWICK VILLAGE CHRISTMAS November at St Mary s Fordingbridge Memorabilia: If you have any memorabilia that may be suitable for the display in St Mary s Fordingbridge, please could you let Janet Newman ( ) know. Many thanks. Poppies: Please continue to make poppies for the Fordwick Village Christmas 1918 Festival after the deadline for the town poppies. Hundreds are needed to make a wave of poppies coming down from the outside of the church tower. There will be a template to make a felt poppy in October s Parish News & Views magazine, carry on making knitted and crocheted poppies or even cut them out of the clear base of a 2litre fizzy drink s bottle and use permanent red pens!! Finished poppies can be given direct to Janet Newman, Helen Tague, Judith Dowsett or put in the bag on the Trussell Trust trolley. Thank you for all your help. Christmas Fayre in Fordwick: Our Fayre this year will be very Christmassy and be held in Fordwick Village Hall ie. The North Chapel! It will be a bit different because we need to run stalls for as many of the 3 days as we possibly can. Therefore we need lots of the following please: preserves, jams and chutneys; unused gifts and toiletries; (full!) bottles, bottles, even more bottles and cans. We would like these as soon as possible and will put a collecting box in church for donations from 30 September by the north door. The sooner we have things in for the stalls the sooner we will have an idea of how long it will all last! There will be a book stall on the hall stage, but please save your donations of books until nearer the time. Thank you for your generosity!! Any queries to Helen Tague or Judith Dowsett NB. NO clothing and NO bric a brac please. Lists will go up later in October requesting your help to man the stalls, as well as help with refreshments etc. JIGSAW PUZZLE FESTIVAL: ST MARY S, FORDINGBRIDGE NEEDS PUZZLES & MAKERS! The response to our plea for puzzles and makers has been fantastic, thank you. Please keep up the good work!! Donated puzzles may be left in St Mary s Fordingbridge.
