PARTNERS weekly newsletter 1 July 2018 Trinity 5 As we welcome Mike Trotman (ordained deacon this morning to serve in this Benefice) and his wife Heidi and their two children Phoebe and Sam, I offer this rather wonderful poem which is full of expectation of an ordained minister! It is attributed to Reginald Askew, 1975: Give us a man of God Father, to pray for us, Longed for, and insignificant but excellent in mercy, And ordain him someone who loves the mystery of faith Whose conversation seems credibly to come from heaven A poor man, a hungry man whose hospitality is endless. Give us a preaching man Father, who doesn t know how to fake, A free man, on holiday in this parish, a still man Good as an ikon with a heart full of treasure; Someone to talk to when death comes here, A fellow countryman of birth and death And the dynasty of our family whose eye has missed nothing. Give us a man without sanctimony Father, to handle what is eternal, A private citizen among miracles not his, modest, capable of silence Someone who reminds us now and then of your own description And another kingdom by the righteousness of his judgement Or some grace in what s done in laying down his life even for his friends. God bless you Mike, Heidi, Phoebe and Sam as you come to live and work among us John Towler St Mary s Fordingbridge SP6 1BB St Mary s Breamore SP6 2DF Holy Ascension Hyde SP6 2QJ St Giles Godshill SP6 2JJ St Boniface Woodgreen SP6 2AJ St Mary s Hale SP6 2RF Sandleheath Uniting Church SP6 1PT We welcome all, especially visitors and those attending for the first time. If you need gluten free wafers at Communion, please speak to someone at the door before the service. Please take this newsletter home with you for the week ahead. Please stay after the morning service for tea and coffee, to meet folk and ask any questions. God Bless

READINGS - for you to use today and during the week 1 July 2018 Trinity 5 COLLECT: Almighty God, send down upon your Church the riches of your Spirit, and kindle in all who minister the gospel your countless gifts of grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN. PSALM 130 (For Morning Prayer) 1. Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. 2. If you, Lord, were to mark what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? 3. But there is forgiveness with you, so that you shall be feared. 4. I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. 5. My soul waits for the Lord, more than the night watch for the morning, more than the night watch for the morning. 6. O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; 7. With him is plenteous redemption and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Paul encourages the Christians at Corinth to be generous in giving II Corinthians 8:7-15 Just as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us see that you also excel in this grace of giving. I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. And here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have. Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, as it is written: He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little. At the end, the Reader says: For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GOSPEL READING Please stand and turn to face the Gospel Reader When the Gospel is announced, the Reader says: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. (Glory be to thee, O Lord.) Two healing miracles. Mark 5:21-43 When Jesus had crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered round him while he was by the lake. Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.

So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed. Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realised that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, Who touched my clothes? You see the people crowding against you, his disciples answered, and yet you can ask, Who touched me? But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering. While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. Your daughter is dead, they said. Why bother the teacher any more? Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, Don t be afraid; just believe. He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. He went in and said to them, Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep. But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, Talitha koum! (which means, Little girl, I say to you, get up! ). Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat. At the end, the Reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (At the end, the Reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.) (c) New Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible. POST COMMUNION PRAYER: Grant, O Lord, we beseech you, that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by your governance, that your Church may joyfully serve you in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Unfortunately, Mike has to have an operation next Friday to repair some hip damage (not great timing, but better to get it done now), so he will be at home recovering for a couple of weeks, and on crutches for a few weeks after that - so don't be surprised if you don't see him around for a bit. After that, he'll be raring to go, and looking forward to meeting everyone. Gary. PRAYER STATIONS at Breamore School, Tuesday 26th - Nicky Davies, Richard Farr and I had a wonderful day at Breamore School last week, working with the whole school on the Lord's Prayer. Each of the five classes had an introduction to the Prayer, and then spent about minutes at each of the three Prayer Stations - reflecting on 'Please' (a wonderful reflective space in the willow trees), 'Forgiveness' (using stones to think about the way people hurt us, and how we forgive) and 'Praise' (using the Praise Parachute'). The responses from children and staff were wonderful - and we hope to do it again in Breamore, Hyde and possibly other schools as well. Gary. BOOST : Unfortunately Boost is cancelled on Thursday 5th July, due to no leaders being available. There is also no Boost in August, so we look forward to seeing you again in September, on Thursday 6th. EMERGENCY PRAYER CHAIN : Please send all requests for prayer to prayer@avp-benefice.org.uk. CHURCH OFFICE : The Church Office will be re-opening on July 2nd on Mondays from 10.30am to 12 noon. Nicky Davies has kindly agreed to work in the office, pending the appointment of a new Parish Administrator. REFLECTION : Something extraordinary is always happening in our world e.g. cannabis oil which alleviates epilepsy and gives life to a youngster; a Japanese prison of war returning to be reconciled with his captor and torturer. We are confronted with the nature of mystery. Something deeply personal and significant is happening. It is like a miracle what is an ordinary situation comes alive, the light dawns, the penny drops. In today s gospel story Mark is telling us that God is profoundly disclosed to Jairus and the woman with a hemorrhage in a way which gives them both a glimpse of Jesus as being the embodiment of the mystery we call God, the depth of our being, the beyond in the midst. And this mystery is not an excuse for not being able to say what was happening in a scientific way. Our belief in God is not a belief in what Bishop John Robinson of Honest to God fame called the God of the Gaps -some experience that science cannot account for. For what the gospel writer is revealing to us is something about the profound nature of God, the Ground of all our being, that in the most ordinary of circumstances the healing hand of God is always at work. John Towler, on behalf of Daphne Himmel
