1 PARTNERS The Avon Valley Partnership weekly newsletter 10 September 2017 Trinity 13 While we enjoy the last of the summer days and as we harvest in the last of our fruit and veg, it can be easy to forget about the devastation caused in the path of Hurricane Irma. Those living in the Caribbean are losing their homes, their livelihoods and possibly even their lives. Up to 49 million people could be affected and another hurricane is forecast. Please do hold them in your prayers. On Thought for the Day on Radio Four (7.9.17) this week, Tina Beatty Professor of Catholic Studies at Roehampton University spoke about our world seeming a dark place at the moment as we wake to news of these natural disasters and the threat of nuclear war. Of the hurricane, she said: It s a reminder of how insignificant we are when confronted with natural forces far beyond our control. She goes on to say that we put too much faith into science and technology and forget about caring for God s creation. She adds that perhaps we focus too much on the idea that only humanity truly matters to God and only humans are saved by Christ. She finds this idea un-biblical, believing the Bible repeatedly draws attention to the way that all of Creation reveals something of the God who creates and sustains it. In this Season of Creationtide (1 st Sept 4 th Oct) let s take the opportunity to refocus on our care for creation. Reflect, pray and then act. Plant a tree, give to a green charity, re-cycle more! 2 READINGS - for you to use today and during the week 10 September 2017 Trinity 13 COLLECT: Almighty God, who looked upon the lowliness of the Blessed Virgin Mary and chose her to be the mother of your only Son: grant that we who are redeemed by his blood may share with her in the glory of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN. PSALM 45:10-17 (For Morning Prayer) 10. Hear, O daughter; consider and incline your ear; forget your own people and your father s house. 11. So shall the king have pleasure in your beauty; he is your lord, so do him honour. 12. The people of Tyre shall bring you gifts; the richest of the people shall seek your favour. 13. The king s daughter is all glorious within; her clothing is embroidered cloth of gold. 14. 5 GARY OUT AND ABOUT : Gary is at a Preaching Conference until Wednesday 13th September ST MARY S CHURCH HALL CAR PARK : You may be aware that there have been increasing numbers of people parking cars in the Hall Car Park when they are not on Church or Hall business. Therefore residents of surrounding roads have been written to recently to remind them that it is a private car park for the use of Church and Hall users only. However, we wish to remind everyone in our congregations who park in the surrounding roads or lanes, to do so with consideration to our neighbours and not block access to any properties. All children of primary age are welcome with their parents and siblings. This year we are having a science corner as well as our usual craft and games activities. 6 FRIENDSHIP GROUP SEPTEMBER : Our Friendship Group meets once a month and is for any person who has been bereaved. New members are always welcome. Our next meeting will be on the 12 th September at 12.30pm. We will be having lunch and a Guest Speaker at 16 Waverley Road, Fordingbridge SP6 1EX. Please phone Kate Wilson to book for lunch. We are holding another all -day regional rally on Saturday 7 th October in the church hall and would be grateful for some help serving tea/coffee/cake. (I know, it s already a full day around the Benefice!) We would need a couple of people in the morning, the same at lunchtime and again in the afternoon. We expect about 50 people and as a bonus, you would be able to creep in and hear the amazing sound of massed ringing a real delight! 7 AUTUMN CLEAN UP at St Mary's Church Hall, Saturday 23 September, 9.30 am to 12.30pm. Please can you give an hour or so to help give the Church Hall and its garden an Autumn clean, ready for our Harvest celebrations? A list will be at the back of church for you to sign up for a variety of tasks or call Judith Dowsett to offer your help. At the same time, the Memorial Garden Team will be working away in the Churchyard. Refreshments will be served mid-morning. Willing hands make light work! Thank you. Please send any articles to church.office@fordingbridge.com REFLECTION : John Towler gave us a very interesting reflection on the Front of Partners last Sunday. Richard Rohr, a Franciscan Monk talks about the necessity of understanding how our childhood affects our adulthood. We might consider how as a child we imagined God - did we see a smiley or grumpy Dad looking down on us, of maybe a fairy godmother who would give us all we asked if we were good and said our prayers -or what? im at all? What is our understanding of God today? Who or where is the God we pray to now? Sometimes our prayers sound very glib as though there is someone somewhere ready to do our bidding. This is perhaps the mystery some of us may be grappling with from time to time. The mystics say that God is the spirit of love born in our hearts I knew you before you were born. (Isaiah}. For our own sakes we have to hope that we are not in charge! Not my will but thy will be done said Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Lord s Prayer says it all. Daphne Himmel
