1 CALLED, GIFTED, SENT FORTH We, the people of God, led and inspired by the Holy Spirit, fed by the Word and the Eucharist, strive to share our faith and live our lives daily as disciples of Christ. Seeing God in Others The Gospel for today gives us the impression that the disciples were envious. When they saw someone using Jesus name to expel demons, they tried to stop him because he wasn t a disciple. In other words, they would like to keep their monopoly of association with Jesus. They focused on the difference between that person and themselves. Because they were disciples, only they had the right to preach. He wasn t a disciple, therefore, he had no right to use the name of Jesus when he tried to heal people. Jesus, however told the disciples, do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. (Mk. 9:39-40) We need to heed what Jesus said to His Disciples, especially to us who may often think that the Church is a place only for people who are better than the rest, rather than for everyone who wants to be better than they are. The message is for us who would like to believe that the Church is a museum of saints reserved only for some and not a hospital of sinners open to all. Further, the message of Jesus is for you and me who discriminate and look down on others because they are not in our same level, class or status. Brothers and Sisters, all of us are called to be His disciples. Discipleship is not just membership. For me, discipleship is doing good things and continuing the good works of Jesus. We don t need to belong to a certain group before we can do something good to others right? - Doing good things has no limit, has no boundaries. It is not exclusive to a certain person or to a certain group. No one has the monopoly of doing good. Let us do good things in the name of Jesus!!! 6 HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS No one enjoys talking about safety and security issues, particularly in church. But we are called to be good stewards. That includes protecting our buildings, assets, and most important, people. Please be aware of pedestrians, and surroundings, as you enter and leave the Church grounds Please park your cars safely and considerately. Please keep our church driveways free of vehicles. Please notify the Parish office of any risks/ hazards identified in the Church. Thank you. Think Safety, Act Safely! Scripture reflection: Anyone who is not against us is for us Our God s Spirit is offered to all. The power of God s transforming love has no boundaries and is at work in all things. In a similar way, Jesus teaches John that his healing power is not only for his close followers (Gospel). He has to remind them that God s power is not limited by the rules and authority that the disciples may want to set upon it. The Spirit will blow wherever it likes. Jesus reminds his disciples of their need to care for the least powerful in society and not let their actions cause harm to anyone. This message speaks powerfully to our times. The Psalm meditates on the heart of God s law. The truth and wisdom of God s law of love will be our guide. The Second Reading warns of the dangers of material wealth and is a call to act justly and with fairness. It reminds us that we are in relationship with those less fortunate than us. Our wealth impacts on the needs of the poor. May we have the grace to recognise God s Spirit moving in our life and throughout the world. Let us pray for each other that we will remain open and faithful to the movement of the Holy Spirit. Adapted from Parish Life. In the First Reading Moses instructs Joshua not to set limits on how God s love is shared with the community. Joshua thinks that God s Spirit is only for the chosen few. Moses expresses a more inclusive vision for the community, imagining what it would be like if all people were filled with the Spirit of God.
