1 CALLED, GIFTED, SENT FORTH We, the people of God, led and inspired by the Holy Spirit, fed by the Word and the Eucharist, strive to share our faith and live our lives daily as disciples of Christ. EIGHTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR Lent comes around again Ash Wednesday already! What am I going to give up for Lent this year? As we get older the easier it is to slip into a change of gear and give up, what we did last year, and the year before that Would that be making it too easy? Remembering the three demands of Lent: Prayer, Penance and Almsgiving, it is true that choosing some extra daily devotion, putting some money each week into the Caritas Lenten envelope, and giving up chocolate, sugar in my coffee, or some such daily discipline, kept faithfully for the 40 days, would be, for each of us, to legally fulfil the demands of this season. And, of course, it s very important that we should not be over ambitious in our Lenten choices. If we ask too much of ourselves we probably won t make the distance. Since he became Pope, Francis has consistently reminded us that, in reaching out to our neighbour in need, it is not enough to put our hand into our pocket and donate money to the different organisations helping in their various needs. We need to get personally involved out of our comfort zone, physically giving the helping hand, helping serve meals at the Home of Compassion Soup Kitchen, driving for Meals on Wheels, being involved in one of the works of the St Vincent de Paul Society to give a few examples of getting personally involved. Heading in that direction, this Lent, could fulfil the Lenten practice and bring us unexpected blessings. Finally, may I suggest that through this year s Lent we pray for one another that all of us (in our own parish of four communities) may spend these six weeks well, and being drawn closer to Christ, may become closer to one another. St Patrick Wainuiomata CANDIDATE to enter OUR COMMUNITY at EASTER At the Sunday vigil Mass, Saturday 23rd February MELANIE PITCHER was reintroduced to our Community. At the Sunday vigil Mass on the 18th November 2017 Melanie was accepted through the RITE of ACCCEPTANCE into the ORDER of CATECHJUMENS to prepare for her entry into the Church. At that time the birth of her sixth child was imminent. Following Little Evelyn s birth she failed to settle as readily as her older siblings. After reflecting Melanie asked to postpone her entry until Easter 2019/ During the intervening year she has continued receiving instruction slowly and managed to participate at the 10:00am Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Church with her six children. At the initial ceremony her sponsor was JACKIE MACDONALD. Jackie will continue to sponsor Melanie. We now ask the community to pray and support Melanie as she moves to become part of our Church community. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Will be held at 7:00pm in the church every Friday during Lent.

6 HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS No one enjoys talking about safety and security issues, particularly in church. But we are called to be good stewards. That includes protecting our buildings, assets, and most important, people. Please be aware of pedestrians, and surroundings, as you enter and leave the Church grounds. Please keep the parking spaces closest to the Church available for the elderly and/or infirm. Thank you. Please park your cars safely and considerately. Please keep our church driveways free of vehicles. Think Safety, Act Safely! Scripture Reflection: The just will flourish. still bearing fruit when they are old. Today s readings urge us to draw life from hearts filled with the goodness and teachings of the Lord... to live virtuous lives that bear sound fruit. In the First Reading, the author uses images from everyday experience to highlight the importance of our words, suggesting that our moral worth (or the lack of it) can be proved by our speech. The Psalmist speaks of the value of continual gratitude to God, and also paints a picture of the sturdiness of the person of virtue. Paul encourages the Christians in Corinth to see Christ s resurrection as the source of their hope. He also exhorts his hearers to persevere in doing good and working for the Lord. (Second Reading) In the Gospel, Jesus also uses simple reflections on human experience in his teachings. Disciples must learn from their master, and in the process become like him. Having warned against the danger of judging others, he also states that just as a tree s value is judged by its fruit, so the true test of human virtue is the way we live our life. This week, we may desire to pray for a discerning heart and spirit, committed to trying to find God s invitation and his will in the actions and fruits of our daily life. Parish Life From the Archdiocesan Commission for Peace and Development If you must correct a tiny flaw there, consider that you have so many that are greater. The Lord says this effectively: First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck from the eye of another. Only in this way will you not be blind and will you see clearly to truly help your brother. Thus humility is important in order to recognize that I am a greater sinner than him, a greater sinner than her. Pope Francis: Mending holes in the fabric of the Church, September 2014
