3 4 Heresies that Changed the Church CTT Seminar Throughout Church history, theological doctrine was often articulated in response to teachings of otherwise faithful people which the Church finally decided were erroneous statements of faith. Those moments in our past forced the Church to become more precise in its own language and understanding. This seminar will examine 4 of the heretical notions that helped the Church define where it stood and what it believed and the impact that continues to have today. REGISTER: The seminar will meet 4 Mondays from 7-8pm October 22, 29, November 5, November 26 (please note the skipped weeks) Free for students $5 for associate at Sheil or faculty and staff at Northwestern Sheil CORE Seminar: The Gift of Discipleship Discipleship means following the teachings of the Master. It is to be disciplined in our lives. How does our discipleship in Christ manifest itself in our lives? How do we live morally and justly? How do we respond to the world that way? How do we make decisions when the situation is complicated? What is the place of Catholic Social Teaching both as a guide and a witness? This seminar explores those questions and more. 4 Sheil Community Celebrates a Golden Jubilee of our Center and The Christ the Teacher Chapel Kick-off Event Next Sunday October 7 The Sheil community is celebrating its 50th anniversary of our chapel and center. The first Mass was celebrated in our chapel, in October This anniversary provides a great opportunity to mark the occasion with a renewal of its liturgical focus as a faith community, and include a renewal of the liturgical space. We will kick off our year of renewal Sunday, October 7 with a special blessing and celebration of the chapel at all Masses. Please join us. The Sheil Renewal Team of associate and student representatives has taken great care in recommending a vision for refreshing and updating our worship space; the foundation of these conversations has stemmed from the spiritual renewal of the community as a whole. Everything that has been discussed so far has dealt with improvement of the current space in order to benefit the future of the Sheil Catholic Center community at prayer. Suggestions for improvements to our worship space include: Established accessibility to the Sanctuary Updated Sanctuary furnishings More distinctive Chapel doors (inclusion of stained glass) There are other proposals being discussed, but further decisions will not be made prior to community conversation. Sheil will offer community formation & discussion sessions facilitated by liturgical consultant, Fr. Phil Horrigan, on Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m., beginning on October 11 and continuing through November 8. All members of the community, student and associate alike, are invited, and encouraged to attend these sessions, which will serve to be formative, as well as, informative in nature. We hope that as many members of the Sheil family will be available to participate in these sessions as possible. It is an exciting time for the Sheil Catholic Center. We give thanks for our history, embrace our present, and look forward to our future journey of faith and mission though the Sheil Renewal Project. The retreat is student led and is a great opportunity to meet new friends, spend time in conversation and prayer and, most important, to give yourself the space to breathe and refresh the heart and mind.
