They are based on the book, Draw a Circle, by Mark Batterson. Several of the passages and insights were especially meaningful and inspiring. Here are some highlights from three of them: Write It Down! Advice I received many times over when I started in ordained ministry taught me to keep a notebook or some paper in my back pocket, someplace handy, because ideas, inspiration, and insights would come at all times during the course of day or night. Write them down was the advice, with the idea that most of the recording would go towards ideas, illustrations, and insights for sermons. Batterson expands this view to include the imperative into our prayer life. Keep a journal of your prayer life and who and what you are praying for; track of the people and issues you are praying for and look back to see how God has responded. It will later become a time capsule of sorts, where we can look back and see how we have grown or gained new insights that can continue to guide and keep us. Habakkuk 2:2 "Write down the revelation." One of Batterson's sayings is, "The shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory. Next to my Bible, nothing is more sacred to me than my journal. It's the way I mark my trail (see where I have been and can look or find a way back when needed.) Journaling is one of the most overlooked and undervalued spiritual disciplines... it's on par with praying, fasting, and meditating. It's the way we document what God is doing in our lives." A prayer journal is something like a letter or note to God remembering the ways we have related with God, the people in our lives, and life itself. There are some things we might not notice unless we take time to pray, and to write it down. And perhaps, one day, one way of looking at it would be to say it is and becomes scripture written today for tomorrow's believers. I'm grateful our spiritual ancestors were led by God to "write it down". What we experience in life can lead us to insights that are blessings to share that will help others. Today, we have incredible ways to record our lives, including the computers and devices we are using for these devotions. I hope eventually I figure it out, but I'm told that most smart phones will take dictation; what a gift! I pray we make the most of what God has entrusted to us. As we journey through this season of Lent, may God bless us with the empowerment and awareness to pray and write it down. (Continued on Page 3)

3 A P R IL P A GE 3 (From Tim - Continued from Front Page) Memorial Prayers. Prayers never die! They are eternal! Batterson shares, "My grandfather had a prayer ritual that involved kneeling at his bed every night; he'd take out his hearing aid, and pray for his family. He couldn't hear himself without his hearing aid, but everyone else in the house could hear him (as he prayed). Few things leave as lasting an impression than hearing someone intercede for you by name. These prayers are some of my earliest memories." "Grandpa died when I was 6 years old, but his prayers did not. Our prayers never die!" When we pray, our prayers are within and extend beyond the dimensions of our lives and time and space. "Our prayers have no time limitations because the God who hears and answers them exists (within and) beyond the limits of our time and space. We never know when his answer will reenter the atmosphere of our lives, and that should fill us with holy anticipation. Never underestimate His ability to answer anytime, anyplace, anyhow. He has infinite answers to our finite prayers. He can answer them more than once. And he answers them forever." "Like a loving parent who collects their children's elementary artwork and displays it prominently on a refrigerator door, our heavenly Father loves our prayers. Each one is a keepsake." Since our prayers are so precious to God, they need to be extremely significant to us. They are worth collecting like snap shots in a family photo album. They will not be forgotten. They will not go unanswered. Don t Pray Away, Pray Through (Our Challenges) John 9:3 "This happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him." Many times the moments in life that are the most challenging for us, provide a great opportunity to be claimed more fully by God and consecrate ourselves more completely to our faith. A dynamic of real love is the freedom to choose to love and be loved. God provides the freedom for us to decide. In the midst of the most trying, difficult times, choosing God leads to incredible growth in our relationships. We remember the story of "the man born blind" in John 9 as an example of how during difficult, challenging situations, human nature looks for someone to blame, instead of seeing the situations as an opportunity to grow and mature as we allow God to be at work with and in us. "Who sinned, this man or his parents?" The people asked. Sometimes we need to pray "get out prayers," (Lord get us out of this situation!), but more often we need to pray "get me through" prayers (Lord be with us through this tragedy or difficulty). And we need to pray to discern which one to pray and when. To be candid, we often pray for our own personal comfort rather than to understand and grow in our relationship with God. We often seek to pray away our problems, but short, limited focused prayers, short circuit God's vision and the relationship God is offering. We often ask for the wrong thing at the wrong time for the wrong reasons: "There's a big difference between praying away and praying through. We're often so anxious to get out of difficult, painful, or challenging situations that we fail to grow through them. We're so fixated on getting out of them that we don't get anything out of them. We fail to learn the lessons God is trying to teach us or cultivate the character God is trying to grow in us. We're so focused on God changing our circumstances that we never allow God to change (transform) us! So instead of ten or twenty years of experience (and authentic relationship with God) we have one year of experience repeated 10 or 20 times." The primary focus and purpose of prayer is to transform us. "Sometimes God delivers us from our problems; sometimes God delivers us through our problems." God is with us in our lives and helps us grow and mature in love and faith. Fully human and fully divine, Jesus went through so much for us! He reveals how much God goes through, with and for us every day. Thanks be to God! Summary These three devotions were three that I thought could really transform our individual lives and our fellowship. Most importantly, they can bring us closer to God. The themes to them are familiar to us, and when we truly take them seriously, live in them faithfully, our lives will be blessed and be a blessing to others. I pray you find them meaningful. Tim Acolyte Training On Sunday, April 2 we will host an acolyte training for our children second grade and older who would like to take part in this ministry.
