02 Carrickfergus Historical Reenactment Group Chairman s Welcome Hello and welcome to the 327th Anniversary of the 1690 Carrickfergus landing of King William III. This year has seen some exciting developments and changes. First of which, the changing of the name to the Royal Landing. The name change from Pageant to Royal Landing has been brought about in an attempt to modernise and attract new interest. We have a four day extravaganza planned for this year. Starting on Thursday 8th June we will have a display of Lambeg drumming, on the Friday 9th we will hold an open air concert in the Marine Gardens the landing itself will take place on Saturday 10th and the four days will conclude with a Gospel Concert on Sunday. More details of these events is detailed later in the booklet. As committee Chairman I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the reenactment groups, visitors, lodges and bands to the borough for the 2017 Royal Landing. I hope everyone taking part and watching enjoy the hospitality on offer in Carrickfergus. I would personally like to thank both the members of the Royal Landing Committee and Carrickfergus Community forum for helping to organise today s events. I am confident you will agree they have all done a fantastic job. Special thanks also go our charity partner the British Heart Foundation. All that remains for me to say is enjoy your day in Carrickfergus and when you go home please spread the word about the Royal Landing to family and friends. Darren McAllister Pageant Committee Chairman

The History of the Royal Landing in Carrickfergus Carrickfergus Royal Landing On June 11th 1690 King William III departed Hoylake on the tip of the Wirral Peninsula. On June 14th the hills of Ireland came in sight and in the afternoon the fleet cast anchor of Carrickfergus. He was rowed ashore in the Rear Admiral's barge and at about 3.30pm landed at the Old Quay under the shadow of the great Norman Castle. After the Second World War (WWII) the Orange Brethren of Carrickfergus decided to hold a Pageant (renamed Royal Landing in 2017) reenacting the landing of King William III in Carrickfergus Harbour on Saturday 14th June The first Pageant was held on Friday 14th June 1946 and due to its success it was decided that the Pageant would become an annual event. The annual reenactments were staged until 1952 when it was decided not to continue as the town could not accommodate the growing numbers attending each year. In 1982 the Pageant was revived and has been held annually in June every year since. The parade is supported and funded by the Big Lottery Fund, DEARA, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Tourism NI and the Ulster-Scots Agency.

Arthur Lawton Memorial LOL 696 Carrickfergus Royal Landing In 1994 five members of the Sons of Derry 695 who sat in Liverpool decided to open a new Lodge on the Wirral. With the help of Brother Tommy Bow HDGM from the Sons of Derry a new Lodge called Arthur Lawton Memorial L.O.L. 696 was formed. Brother Arthur Lawton was an Orangeman and a long serving member of the Sons of Derry L.O.L. 695 in Liverpool Province. Over the years the Lodge has grown from strength to strength and we have had many successful parades. In 2009 the Lodge held a parade in Hoylake to celebrate the historical event of King William 111 sailing from Hoylake to Carrickfergus from where he went to fight the Battle of the Boyne. Through the Grand Lodge of Ireland the Lodge was put in contact with Brother John McMurran from Carrickfergus District Lodge No.19. The Lodge Brethren have formed a strong friendship with Carrickfergus and are regular participants in the annual Carrickfergus Pageant in June each year. Arthur Lawton Memorial L.O.L. 696 are now twinned with Carrickfergus District Lodge. In 2016 the Brethren of L.O.L. 696 formed the Hoylake Historical Reenactment Group and will be holding an annual Pageant in Hoylake to commemorate King William s departure from Hoylake. We hope to build this annual event and make it as successful as the Carrickfergus Royal Landing. Arthur Lawton Memorial Banner

16 Carrickfergus Historical Reenactment Group Martin Luther 2017 marks a significant milestone in the Protestant Faith. The 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther protesting the Catholic Church s practice of selling indulgences to absolve sin. His 95 Theses proposed two central beliefs that the Bible is the central religious authority and that humans may reach salvation only by their faith and not their deeds. This nailing of the 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church was the spark that founded the Protestant Reformation. Born in Eisleben, Germany, in 1483, and baptized a Catholic, Martin Luther went on to become one of Western history s most significant figures. Luther spent his early years in relative anonymity as a monk and scholar. However when in 1517, Pope Leo X announced a new round of indulgences to help build St. Peter s Basilica. An angry Martin Luther nailed a sheet of paper with 95 theses on the university s chapel door. Though he intended these to be discussion points, the Ninety-Five. Theses laid out a devastating critique of the indulgences as corrupting people s faith. Luther challenged this belief and argued that Christians are saved by faith alone and not by good Deeds. In October 1518, at a meeting with Cardinal Thomas Cajetan in Augsburg, Martin Luther was ordered to recant his Ninety-Five Theses by the authority of the pope.
Carrickfergus Royal Landing Luther said he would not recant unless scripture proved him wrong. He went further, stating that he didn t consider the papacy had the authority to interpret scripture. The meeting initiated his ultimate excommunication from the Church. In June and July 1519 he publicly declared that the Bible did not give the pope the exclusive right to interpret scripture, which was a direct attack on the authority of the papacy. Finally, in 1520, the pope had had enough and on June 15th issued an ultimatum threatening Luther with excommunication. On December 10th, 1520, Luther publicly burned the letter. In January 1521, Martin Luther was officially excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. On May 8, 1521, the council released the Edict of Worms, banning Luther s writings and declaring him a convicted heretic. This made him a condemned and wanted man. Friends helped him hide out at the Wartburg Castle. While in seclusion, he translated the New Testament into the German language, to give ordinary people the opportunity to read God s word. Martin Luther is one of the most influential and controversial figures in the Reformation movement. His actions fractured the Roman Catholic Church into new sects of Christianity and set in motion reform within the Church. A prominent theologian, his desire for people to feel closer to God led him to translate the Bible into the language of the people, radically changing the relationship between church leaders and their followers. Throughout 2017 a series of events is being held to mark the anniversary of Martin Luther s nailing of the 95 Thesis.

Noah and Grace Coates My name is Sarah Coates I live with my husband Greg and our two beautiful children Noah who is 10 and his sister Gracie who is 7. Carrickfergus Royal Landing We are honoured and humbled to share with you the story of local children Noah and Grace Coates as told by their mum Sarah. In 2009 our lives were changed forever in a moment of time, Noah was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukodystrophy called Vanishing White Matter Disease, as you may imagine we were totally devastated especially when the Consultant told us it was a life limiting Disease with a life expectancy of teenage years. Gracie was born a few months later and she was also diagnosed months later with the same condition as Noah. It s a very rare condition with maybe only 250 reported cases worldwide, it is also a very cruel disease and has progressed much faster with Noah. In the past year we have been told that the disease has spread into his brain stem, which sadly has caused great deterioration in the past year. Noah has gone from an active wee boy to having lost his mobility completely. Noah can no longer sit up by himself and is now fed through an NJ tube, he has also developed lots of other complex issues. This is heart-breaking for us to watch, but he continues to battle on despite all these issues. Gracie is currently doing well, with only minor symptoms of the disease at present, we pray this continues we are so thankful and continue to pray for Gods Strength and Grace. We as a family would like thank everyone who has supported us, there are no words to express our gratitude. On friday night there will be a collection for Noah and Grace - thank you for your support.
