Adent Actiies Offer Many Opportunities to Gie from the Heart Adent Festial last Sunday began with member Becky Gray reading from the Sparkle Book, which presents things a young person can put in their Sparkle Box, things like community serice or helping a family member or another person. Some suggestions were as simple as giing someone a smile or a hug, making your bed, or putting your toys away. The suggestions were written on paper stars hanging on the Sparkle Tree in the main lobby. This was how the children got started on their adent experience. (See SPARKLE page 7) is a box to put our gifts for Jesus. Loe from the Sparkle Box "After the children decorated their boxes they were encouraged to write down one gift for Jesus. One young boy eagerly wrote his gift on his piece of paper and proudly showed it to me. On the piece of paper, it simply said "my loe." Wow! There is no question that this church is making a difference!" Jim and Becky Gray with gifts for Santa s Workshop Outreach team member Cassie Gray shared this experience of children participating in FCC adent actiities with Director of Children's Ministries, Beerly Vale Brown: "Wasn't the adent festial great?! The room was filled with so much joy, loe, and holiday spirit. This year the Outreach Committee sponsored a table for the children to make their ery own Sparkle Boxes. 2 O come, all ye faithful... I don t know about you, but I m not ready for Christmas. I haen t had time to put up any lights; I haen t done any shopping yet; Cassie and I haen t been able to send out any Christmas cards; we haen t een gotten out our Christmas tree yet (and our cats are losing their patience on that one). I am SO not ready for Christmas. In fact, I m extraordinarily unprepared for Christmas eek!! It seems that eery year the Christmas season comes earlier and earlier. Coffeeshops and shopping malls hae been playing the old familiar carols for a couple of months, already. My mailbox has been stuffed so full of adertisements on holiday sales that I fear the retailers are putting trees onto the endangered species list. Things just seem to get busier and busier and I neer feel ready for Christmas. By the time it comes, after I e made the Herculean effort to get eerything done, I m so glad it s all oer and I don t hae to go through the holiday madness for another eleen months. Or will it be only ten? Does something seem wrong with the way we do this holiday hurricane of Christmas? Does it mean anything real anymore? Are we just going through the motions because they re familiar to us? Oh, we may erbally acknowledge that Jesus is the reason for the season but that phrase has become a cliché, tired and worn out, no longer conicting or conincing. Is Christmas still releant to our human condition, or has the celebration of Christmas been reduced to shopping, parties, and presents? Here are some questions we need to ask if Christmas is going to hae any real meaning beyond a regurgitation of popular and secular culture: What does it mean that God would come to us in the form of a tiny human baby? Why would God do that? Why would we need God to do that? Why would we want God to do that? Something happened for the Word of God to choose to become human flesh and dwell among us. We were looking for a Messiah, and God gae us one. Why were we looking? Are we still in need of one? These questions lie at the ery heart of our faith, deep and difficult questions that gie us cause to wrestle with the Diine Mystery in worship and prayer and serice. This Christmas Ee, come and experience the Diine Mystery as we gather with carols, communion, and candlelight. Come and discoer the hope that sustains us as we wait for the coming of Christ. Come and discoer the peace God promises us. Come and discoer the joy we share in his coming. Come and discoer the loe surrounding us. Come and discoer light and life. Come and discoer anew the reason for our celebration. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, born the King of angels... Our Christmas Ee serices begin at 5:30 p.m. in the and 11:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. O come, my sisters and brothers, let us adore Him. Soli Deo Gloria, Re. Michael 2014 DEACONS MEETING December 29th at 10:15 in the Sanctuary DECEMBER 29th Recognition of 2013 Officers, Elders, Deacons, Trustees and Ministry Council in Worship Serices JANUARY 5th Installation of 2014 Officers, Elders, Deacons, Trustees and Ministry Council in Worship Serices JANUARY 12th Elders will sere Communion to Home-Centered NO MIDWEEK PEAK FOR DECEMBER 25 OR JANUARY 1 CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS BREAK Midweak Peak will resume on January 8. 3 YEAR END GIFT REMINDER As you consider your charitable giing for the rest of this year, the following are things to consider in your planning: 1. The gift of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares to fulfill pledges can be a great tax adantage. With today s stock market this may not be adantageous unless the stock shows an appreciated alue. The donor gets to deduct the full alue of the property on the day the gift is donated, and to aoid capital gains taxes as well, if itemizing deductions on Income Tax returns. But start soon to allow time to complete the transaction before December 31st. Call your tax adisor or Mary Byrne for details. 2. IRA Charitable Gifts If you are oer 70 ½ and hae a traditional IRA, you may request your IRA administrator to make direct distributions up to $100,000 in 2013 to the church or other charities. It will not be counted as a taxable distribution to you, and it can be counted against your required minimum distribution if you choose. This window of opportunity closes as of December 31, You may want to pay your pledge for 2014 in adance to take adantage of these tax saings. 2. For 2014 consider using Automated Bank Drafts to pay your pledge. You can choose the 3rd and/or the 18th of the month to hae the authorized amount withdrawn. Allow two weeks to get started. Oer 50 busy members are currently using this serice to sae time and checking costs and to maintain their peace of mind. Questions? Call Mary Byrne at , Ext REMEMBER! All gifts to be included on your 2013 Income Tax return as charitable deductions must be deliered to the church or postmarked by December 31 st. The church office will close at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, December 31 st. If you are behind on your 2013 General Fund pledge, please make eery effort to catch up by December 31st. Let s finish this year with extra giing and start next year on sound footing as careful stewards of this church and its resources. 4 A Serice of Hope and Solace Friday, December 20th 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel The holidays are supposed to full of joy, but for many of us finding it is an enormous challenge. While others are singing and shopping and seemingly happy, some struggle with depression, grief, anxiety, sadness, or a sense of loss. For those haing the Christmas blues, the bright lights and sparkling traditions only heighten the struggle to find joy. Blue Christmas is a worship serice uniquely fitted to those who find at the most wonderful time of the year a paradoxical increase in genuine feelings of sadness and grief. True joy does not exclude grief it incorporates it. Blue Christmas offers a special and honest recognition of the struggles that many people face during this season. All are welcome to share in this special serice and find hope and solace in Christmas once again, and find the Light in the darkness. The 2013 Christmas Offering for Regional Ministry Disciples congregations will be receiing these offerings on December 15 and 22 Your gifts to the Christmas Offering support all the ministries of your regional church The ministries of your regional church bring gifts: Of care and nurture of congregations and pastors through the Regional Commission on Clergy Of summer ministries to children and youth who attend camps and conferences sponsored by the Commission on Children, Youth and Young Adults To those who lost homes and were injured or lost loed ones during the May tornados Of consultation and direction to congregations seeking transitional pastors or installed pastors Of education and resources through the annual Leadership Training School. We had oer 90 children participating in the actiities, including haing their picture taken with Santa. And, this weekend we conclude the Adent message with a isit to Santa s workshop, where each child no matter what his or her economic circumstances are, will hae an opportunity to select gifts for their family members.
