2 From Pastor s Pen Keyboard You my friend, a stranger once... When Cassie I came to Tulsa to meet with church s Ministry Council prior to our being called to FCC, we were in our hotel room happened to turn on television to Tulsa City Council meeting concerning renaming of Brady Arts District. For next few hours, we sat mesmerized as person after person expressed ir opinions, feelings, understings about what name Brady meant to m what it said about Tulsa. Not only did we begin to come to an understing of Tulsa s past, especially as marked by 1921 race riots, but also strains upon its future as evidenced by disconnect between its various communities difficulty in seeing anor people s viewpoint. And what a complex subject matter it was city founders, Black Wall Street, Klansmen, Greenwood destroyed, rebuilding, rezoning, l purchases, gentrification, urban renewal, tax incentives, food deserts, systemic racism... While Tulsa has made great progress in last 100 years, boy do we have a long way to go. As Christians, how do we respond to struggles that peoples of Tulsa face toger? How can we make a difference bless our community? How can we bring people toger, not just in physical location but in relationship radical empathy? Very simply, Christ calls us to be agents of reconciliation. We are to be bridge builders help span chasms our fractured communities have created between each or. We are to bear gifts of love hope healing to world, we have opportunity to begin some of that work right here in Tulsa. The John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation will host its fifth annual Dinner of Reconciliation on Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Greenwood Cultural Center. The dinner will bring Tulsans toger to enjoy a meal in each or s company, share a vision of reconciliation for Tulsa beyond. People from all across city will be re, representing all of our various communities cultures. We will get to experience each or s stories, celebrate our unique differences, affirm our unity as sisters brors of same human family. There may be sixteen miles of Peoria a myriad of disparate communities along way, but we all live on same street. The Dinner of Reconciliation is a chance for larger Tulsa family to get toger share a meal as a family begin that work of reconciliation, love, hope that makes us one. First Christian Church is sponsoring several seats at dinner, you have opportunity to buy a ticket for yourself or sponsor someone else who can t orwise share in great experience. Tickets are only $20 ($10 for K-12 students), it gets you a seat at table, musical multicultural experiences, a video presentation from a Tulsa youth, rich conversations with ors who care about Tulsa s future our future toger, an incredible multi-course menu prepared by culinary arts department from OSU- IT. Ms. Carmen Fields, a Tulsa native award-winning, nationally known journalist, will be guest speaker help us think about how we can bring hope reconciliation to our city. Cassie I, along with a few FCC folk, will be re because we believe strongly in Christ s call to be ministers of love reconciliation in world, especially world right here right around us in Tulsa. This is but one of many ways FCC can make a difference bless our community. I hope you will consider taking part coming to table for a meal toger it s exactly kind of thing Jesus would do. Soli Deo Gloria, Rev. Michael Now my Love is also yours, my people are your own; embraced toger in God s arms, I enfold you now in mine. When you do this, remember me. Page 2
