FCC Welcomes Michael Riggs as Senior Minister and Cassie Sexton-Riggs as Associate Minister The Ministry Council, upon the recommendation made by the Personnel Committee, at the September 9, 2013 meeting, unanimously approved the appointment of Rev. Cassie Sexton-Riggs as an Associate Minister of First Christian. Cassie grew up in Florida, where her parents were members of the Disciples of Christ Church. While in high school, she served on the Youth Ministry Council of Florida. She attended undergraduate school at Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Virginia and served various churches as a youth director while attending college. She was also President of the Disciples on Campus. Cassie graduated from Brite Divinity School in May, 2013 with her Master of Divinity degree. She was ordained in the Disciples of Christ Church in July, She and Michael Noble Riggs were married in October, First Christian Church of Tulsa joins a growing number of churches in the Disciples tradition that have elected to have the ordained leadership in the hands of a clergy couple. The trend also is growing in other denominations nationwide. Initially, in addition to other duties, Cassie will utilize her strong background in youth programming to develop a sustainable youth program for First Christian. Cassie believes that such a program is needed to provide consistency for youth participants and it will be designed in such a manner that it will endure, even if the youth director changes from time to time. She will lead the program initially, but a part-time youth director will be hired within the next 12 to 15 months to have primary responsibility for the program. Cassie will assist in the process of finding the right person to be that leader. Cassie will also design and develop a program of evangelism for the church, share preaching in the absence of the Senior Minister, and will share with the pastoral care of the membership. She will work in collaboration with the leadership for the Deacons for the service life of the congregation. Carol Lawson will also continue to serve FCC Tulsa as a part-time Associate Minister in a role that will supplement the roles of both Michael and Cassie Riggs. Members of the congregation have expressed their excitement about the new clergy team, and they, along with the church staff, have expressed their eagerness to begin the new chapter in the life of FCC Tulsa. 2 herbsthyme As we arrive at the end of our relationship I want to thank the members of First Christian Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma for extending the call to serve as your Intentional Interim Minister. Over the past few months Suzy and I have had the opportunity to build a relationship with you through the ups and downs of this church s life and ministries. Somewhere in the last two sermons I will share with you some of the things that have spoken to me, about you and our fourteen months together. Always, Suzy and I will be grateful that we have had this opportunity. It allowed us to answer a call to serve you, and answering the call allowed us to spend more than a year living close to Suzy s son and his family. I came with a part of my goals being we would intentionally work at building all that this church does on the Word of God, beginning to create a safe place for folks to come and be genuinely what God has called them to be. It was my prayer we would instill a sense of compassion, we would become not just a friendly church, but a church that practices a welcoming hospitality, to one another and to the community. I had hoped this church would intentionally begin to understand, either again or anew, that prayer/healthy spiritual life is not an event, but rather a lifestyle that when practiced each day in our personal lives, only enhances, makes healthier, your life shared as a family of faith. The leaders of this church have worked hard and made some tough decisions, many of which needed to be made years ago, about finances, staff, and building. While it is extremely difficult to celebrate when the church has to make the decision to let folks go that many have come to love, I hope you rest as well as you can, knowing those difficult decisions needed to be made. We have had some wonderful celebrations. The biggest celebration for me was the relationship I have shared with the staff. From the top to the bottom, both clergy and supportstaff have proven over, and over, and over again, they are competent people, who have a sense of God s calling in their work. After my relationship with all of them began to grow, I never once left town worried if all of the daily work or any other events would be handled in a professional and compassionate manner. They either called and we had a conversation; or they made decisions within their areas. Carol, Mary, Bev, Dwight, and Robin are competent people. Jarrod and Paul as the music leaders have served well. There is not one of them that I would not call to serve on any future staff I would head. I want to say thank you to the Vision team for the many hours they sacrificed, for the energy they used, for their perseverance continually pushing this congregation to face the context of this church s history, and what that means as this church goes forward. You have trusted your Search and Call team to do their work in the midst of prayer, to have conversations with the congregation, to gather names, to check on references to the 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th levels of any serious candidate. They have brought you a recommendation and you have accepted. My prayer is God will build a strong and binding relationship between Michael and Cassie and this family of faith, in such a way as to enhance the ministries of this church, both present and those to be created. It is my hope that in ten years I will be able to return to a packed house for the 11 th Annual Jazz to the World Concert. I invite you to be in prayer for Michael and Cassie, share with them a welcoming hospitality, encourage them to take care of their own health and spirit, intentionally, as they give of themselves to create a church where you can do the same. Wouldn t it be great if the parking lot across the street were turned into a community garden that would not only help feed the downtown homeless, but give them a place to work, perhaps in conjunction with students from TCC? Or if we had a food truck festival to start off the new year and welcome folks to First Christian? As Michael and Cassie come to serve may you be committed to first looking at all the ways a new idea or a new ministry may be accomplished, before anyone begins to intone all the reasons an idea or ministry could not work. I celebrate with you the call of your new senior minister. You will be in my prayers regularly. May God bless you, always. 3 from Michael... All roads lead to Rome Tulsa... GREETINGS from Cassie... Greetings from Cowtown! As Cassie and I have been preparing for our move to Tulsa, I ve been thinking about an often forgotten part of the move: THE ROAD TRIP. To be honest, I love road trips. Ever since I was a little boy traveling from Wichita to Cherokee to visit my grandparents, I ve always had a sense of wonder and excitement over the journey to someplace new, to special people, and to a place where I was loved and felt at home. From the bayous and byways of Louisiana to the miles upon miles of Interstate (construction) in Texas, I ve spent a good amount of time on the road and I love the journey as much as the destination. My first road trip to Tulsa was in 2004, when I drove with my old mentor Ron Shirey and the TCU School of Music through the midwest on a recruiting tour. Along the way, Ron shared stories about First Christian and its rich history of ministry in the sacred arts, an experience only to be trumped by our arrival there and sharing with the people themselves in an offering of music and praise under that ever-memorable dome. Back in 2006 while serving FCC Amarillo, before I even knew about the Jazz Hall of Fame, I associated jazz with Tulsa from the innumerable CDs I would play while making my weekly commute to Phillips Theological Seminary as I began my M.Div. studies. I m fairly certain I know every bump in the road between Amarillo and Tulsa, but just thinking about driving to Tulsa still brings music to my ears and a warm expectation of being welcomed and loved. From the first time I stepped foot under the stained-glass dome to most recently climbing inside it with members of the staff and search committee, First Christian has called to me, and Cassie and I are ever grateful to call First Christian our home. As we get to know one another, we would love to hear your own stories about your families, the church, and the hopes and dreams you have for the future. Like the disciples walking to Emmaus, our Christian journey is very much a road trip we make together as we share stories of the beautiful and hard realities of life, our experience of Jesus Christ, and our welcoming others to break bread with us only to have our eyes opened and see more clearly the inbreaking reign of God s love. Calling Cassie and me to join the team at First Christian has been an important arrival point in the church s story, and now we all get to make a journey together along the road God lays before us, a road of promise and perseverance and new possibilities just over the horizon. A new day is dawning with new challenges ahead, and to meet them God needs a renewed Church. Tulsa needs First Christian. Let s buckle up and hit the road! See you soon, Michael I am currently sitting in our living room in the midst of boxes, bubble wrap, and tape as we prepare to join the FCC Tulsa family! We are both so excited to be partners in ministry with you all and cannot wait to begin this new chapter of our lives as a church together. We have been blessed to get to know the Search and Call Team as well as the Ministry Council. We would love the opportunity to gather with each of you to break bread and get to know you and your families better. A recent article I read stated the importance of a church family knowing one another. Even how not knowing or calling someone by the wrong name can often tear at the very fabric of the church. The truth is that names are a part of every culture and that they are enormous importance to the people who receive names and to the societies that have given them. They re more than just letters grouped together to sound pleasant to the ear. Names are more than a convenience allowing us to talk to each other. Names are a gift from God. Names give people the dignity and respect that they deserve as a child of God. They contain God s power. They define things. They define us. Throughout the Bible, characters are given names at birth that reflect something of significance or describe the course of their lives. For example: Isaac means God laughs. And if we did take for holy laughter how could we be God s church? Our names carry meaning too. For example before I married my name was Cassandra Alice Sexton. Cassandra meaning God s helper, Alice (after my Great-Grandmother) meaning noble and Sexton meaning keeper of the church. And with a name like that how did I think I was going to be a lawyer! Now I am Sexton-Riggs, which means I am a keeper of the church on a ridge. What does the name First Christian mean to the Tulsa area? Does our name mean grace and welcome to others? What might we do to give meaning to our church s name? Part of our practice of biblical hospitality is welcoming people by name. So wear a nametag on Sundays, help us all come to know who you are and maybe you will learn something about yourself too! Blessings, Cassie Page 3

4 For the past year, the Vision/ Search Team has been grappling with the issue of how we transition our church with its glorious heritage into the future. The congregation has declared its intent to maintain a vital mission in the downtown area and expressed its desire for a young, dynamic minister to lead us. As the Search Team was interviewing prospective ministers, one of the questions we asked each of them was, Based on the information we have provided you about FCC Tulsa, what goals would you set for the first six months of your ministry here? Without exception, each candidate expressed the essential need to get to know the congregation. During his final visit with the Search Team and members of the Ministry Council, our new minister, Rev. Michael Riggs, asked us to help him get to know us by (1) wearing name tags at every church event, (2) organizing small groups of to meet informally with Cassie and him to begin building relationships, and (3) planning for a new pictorial directory. To that end, we are preparing name badges for all members of the church and we want everyone to be wearing one on Michael and Cassie s first Sunday, September 29, and every Sunday thereafter for the foreseeable future. Not only will we be helping our new pastors out, but it will further our reputation as an open, friendly church as we welcome visitors in our midst! If you haven t received your name tag already, we will be passing them out in the Main Street lobby for the next two Sundays. If you access the church from another entrance, please make a point of coming to the lobby to pick yours up. Don and I are keeping ours in our car so that if we forget to put it on, we won t have to go any further than the parking lot to retrieve it! Lynn Ray Search Team Member Nominating Ministry Team Request On August 28 th and September 19th the Nominating Team met to begin the process of selecting leadership for Brian Knight is the chair of the nominating team comprised of Kathy Davis, Millie Elswick, Jean Swanson, Mary Byrne, Carol Lawson and Micheal Riggs. Nominations are now being accepted for 2014 officers, voting members of the Ministry Council as specified below, three Trustees, Elders, Deacons, Junior Deacons, Elders Emeriti and Deacons Emeriti. Officers (one-year term, eligible for two years maximum) Moderator Vice Moderator Secretary Treasurer (Chris Murphy is eligible for a second term) Your Name Here! Ministry Council positions (two-year terms, two terms max) open in 2014 are: Worship (Steve Baggett eligible for a second term) Outreach Spiritual Growth (Marcia Boyd eligible for a second term) Communications (Other ministry council representative positions not listed are currently filled, and those terms expire in December 2014) Trustees Three positions for a three-year term ( ) Clarke Kendall, Bill Osteen and Betsi Phillips complete their terms in Trustees continuing are James Howard, George Hauger, Wayne Rumley and Paul Thompson. According to the FCC Bylaws, qualifications for Officers and Ministry Council members are that the person should be a member of the congregation and have served at least one year as an Elder or Deacon. 7 On the Wilder Side So, we have two new ministers! Great. Have you ever wondered what the deal is with preachers in this town and iggs? We had Griggs here, Boston Ave. had Biggs and now they have Wiggs, and we have Riggs. They have all been successful, so it is a good thing. I m so glad I sent Mary Lynn and James Howard to Houston to win the OSU game. They did really well. OSU did really well again this week, also. I enjoyed meeting Brian Knight s parents Labor Day Sunday. They were here from Tyler. They both have beautiful voices. I guess I m the last to know that Brian Knight is Clarke and Joyce Kendall s son-in-law, huh? Sure was glad to see Jeff Daniel in church, looking so fine! We have all missed you! Hey! How about Sandra Lewis and Bill Osteen getting married while I was gone? You take off for the beach and never know what might happen! Congratulations, guys! We had a little mini-shower for them at Cell last week. Among other funny gifts they received, they got a toilet plunger, congratulating them for taking the plunge. Yes, I went to Galveston with my three favorite girls (two daughters and my granddaughter) and three telephones. We had a wonderful time, in spite of the phones. Even though it poured rain two of our three beach days, we were forced to shop, eat, play cards, laugh and giggle and walk on the beach. Darn! Hilda Betts son Adam s daughter is getting married this month in Austin. She is very excited! They were here from Illinois. Bernie Bowers latest adventure was having a huge black bear cross the road in front of the car, while riding with his son-in-law in Colorado. Charlie Crews, Harold Hatfield and Bill Osteen went on an Honor Flight Wednesday the 18th. Each had one of their children with them. It was a great trip! I had a nice visit on the phone with Anne Webb. She sounded great. Bill Largess and Jennifer Annis visit her about once a month and take Olivia (ANNE) her namesake over to see her. Anne said they had a blackout in her neighborhood a couple of weeks ago, and when she pressed her medical alert the police came and took her to her daughter s house to spend the night. It was the first time she ever rode in a police car! Her daughter, the nurse, just retired and she looks after her and buys her groceries and takes her for doctors appointments. We all miss you and your beautiful voice!
