2 From the Pastor s Pen Keyboard Every year, a few persons always notice the cross printed in our worship bulletins as ask me about it. It s not a normal or simple cross, after all. It s very special, and is an illustration of what it means to take up the cross for the Christian faith. This special type of cross is known as a Jerusalem Cross, which is a combination of one large central cross with four smaller crosses in each corner) This symbolizes the good news of the Risen Christ which began in Jerusalem (the center cross) and goes out to the four corners of the earth (the four crosses in the corners of the center cross), reminding us of our call as Christians to proclaim God s love for all people. The question is, How exactly do we proclaim God s love? First, the horizontal axis ranges from one s private faith to one s public faith. The life of faith as a Christian is both public and private, just like Jesus. Second, the vertical axis ranges from mercy to piety. We are to love God (piety) and love neighbor (mercy). Private piety focuses on acts of devotion: prayer, study, contemplation, listening to sacred music. We need to have acts of devotion as part of our life of faith to nurture the inner spirit. Public piety focuses on acts of worship: assembly, praise, proclamation, shared song, and sacrament. We need to engage in acts of worship because our life of faith cannot be fully lived in solitude, but rather in community. or bonnets, writing letters of encouragement, etc. We need to make acts of compassion a part of our life of faith because so many in this world need to be loved and we are to love our neighbors. Public mercy focuses on acts of justice: advocating for the downtrodden, speaking out against oppression, organizing relief efforts, protesting unjust actions and laws. Because human society is far from perfect, and because Christ calls upon us to help make God s reign of love a reality, we must engage in acts of justice so that God s will is done on earth. Depending on how each of us were raised, what life experiences we each have had, we may or may not have the same focus of faith. Some of us may prefer to serve behind the scenes in a soup kitchen and feed hungry people over being in the front lines of speaking up for the poor. Some of us may prefer the communal prayers of worship to a private prayer life at home. Some of us may prefer to study the Word from the Bible to embodying the Word in service to others. Some of us may prefer to stick up for those who are being wronged today rather than just talk about how people were wronged in Bible times. It s different for each one of us. Where do you find yourself on this cross? Is there an area of faith focus that you prefer? In what areas are you lacking or do you avoid? As we each seek to follow Christ by faith, use this tool to help see where you spend the most time in your current life of faith, and then use it to see how else you might need to take up the cross to find a well-balanced life of faith and proclaim God s love. Soli Deo Gloria, Rev. Michael Private mercy focuses on acts of compassion: rendering aid, feeding the hungry, fashioning quilts Page 2

3 Phillips Theological Seminary s commencement ceremony, hosted by First Christian Church, was well attended. (Right): Melinda McGarrah Sharp, PhD, delivered the faculty reflection while Trustee Board Chair Lynn Moore looks on. Sign up for a group! New Beginnings House Meetings All current FCC members are invited to join one of eight New Beginnings House Meeting groups as we consider new ways of thinking about FCC Tulsa and our role in the community. New Beginnings is a ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), designed to assist churches to discern what God is calling them to be and to do in this time and place. Each House Group will meet four times throughout the summer on a variety of days and times to meet busy schedules. House Groups will discuss our current situation and explore possible future scenarios for FCC Tulsa. The initial assessment by New Beginnings only will be shared at these House Groups, so be sure to sign up and show up! We need you there so that we can hear from you. Sign up sheets are available at the FCC front desk on Sunday mornings, or you may call Rev. Susan at , ext. 113, during the week. The size of each group is limited (8-12 participants), so please select your group soon so that you can join the group you prefer. 6 Big Elk River Trip On May 5-7, FCC youth went to Missouri for the weekend. Our small, yet mighty, band of 12 enjoyed the weekend in Ginger Blue, Missouri. We left for our adventurefilled weekend at 6 p.m. on Friday night, stopped for dinner along the way, and witnessed the after-effects of the recent flood on the area. We made it to our cabin by 9 p.m., but no one went to bed until at least 1a.m.! On Saturday (the first full day), we rafted for 8 miles on the Big Elk River. We had a picnic lunch while out on the river. Everyone including most of the adults took a nap, and we had a cookout and s mores in the evening when we returned to our cabin. On Day 2, we rafted for four miles on the Big Elk River. (Some of the youth were even crazy enough to float in the single-person tubes, so they could say they had been in the cold river water for the entire four miles.) Then adventured into the Bluff Dwellers Cave in Noel, Mo., where the youth sang a pretty awesome version of Amazing Grace in the cave with great acoustics. Front (L to R): Brooklin Knight, Ezri Rathbun, Korra Northcutt, Aryn Cox, Kerri Northcut; Back: Cassie Sexton-Riggs, Malorie Knight, Kelli Knight, Brian Knight, Kate Northcutt, Gillian Payne, Samantha Cox, and Nick Cox All in all, it was great trip! Until our next adventure, Rev. Cassie (Above, L to R): Kerri Northcutt, Korra Northcutt, Aryn Cox, and Brooklin Knight. (Below): Exploring Bluff Dwellers Cave. Page 6

9 On the Wilder Side Notes from the Bird Lady! Be careful what you wish for. This place has turned into Wild Kingdom! I not only have gold finches, but there is a beautiful red bird joining them that I think is a TANAGER. If that isn t enough, two little wrens have set up housekeeping in my geranium plant. They have worked so hard for a week, carrying twigs twice their size. No eggs yet, but the nest is a work of art! Sixteen of us went to Ponca City last week and toured the Marland Mansion. We had a wonderful guide who told us all the details. It was a really fun trip and very interesting. Mr. Marland was quite a guy. puppy who just walked around and visited folks. He came directly to me, jumped in my lap, and curled up. How did he know I needed a dog? Guess he knew I missed Bear. Then he got down, marched down the aisle, and lay at the groom s feet all during the ceremony. His name is Ollie, and he is so cute! Ever stop to wonder why a round pizza is delivered in a square box? why people go up in tall building and put money in binoculars to see things on the ground? why Tarzan doesn t have a beard? why someone believes you when you say there are 4 billion stars but has to check when you say the paint is wet? why phonetically is spelled with a ph? why banks charge a fee for insufficient funds when they know there isn t enough? I went to an outdoor wedding Saturday, and they had a darling Camp Letter Writing 2017 It s that time of year to talk about summer camp! This year we have three campers and one minister going to camp. And part of camp traditions is about singing for your mail. Please write to our campers this summer if you have time. It really means a lot to receive mail from your church family while at camp. Camp is such a special time to create new friendships, catch up with old friends, and deepen one s faith. Here is our list of campers and what weeks they are going to camp, so you can plan your letter-writing and mailing accordingly. Recent topics have included the recent cyberattacks that shut down computers in more than 150 countries, across 300,000 networks. We talked about our own personal vulnerabilities and what security measures we have when under spiritual attack. What measures do we have in place to protect our most precious relationships? (Ephesians 6:10-11): Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Looking Forward: We will continue to utilize the Wired Word curriculum, using current events to lead our discussions. Sojourners Vi Kennett is still roaming the country. Vi, come home! Page 10
