1 Sunday & Beyond The East Koshkonong Lutheran Church April/May 2010 March 28 ~ Palm Sunday 9:00am ~ Worship with communion and Procession of the palms 10:15am ~ Palm Sunday Breakfast hosted by confirmation class On this joyous Palm Sunday, we are pleased to greet each worshiper and extend a hearty Welcome! Let us be in the same spirit as those who shouted Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! As Jesus entered Jerusalem. April 1 ~ Maundy Thursday 4:30 ~ First Communion class 6:00pm ~ Worship Maundy Thursday commemorates the evening just before the crucifixion when Jesus and his friends broke bread together for the Last Supper. It was a t this Last Supper that Jesus instituted the Eucharist or what we call communion. We welcome all, in remembrance of Him, to share this Holy Thursday. Many youth receive their first communion at this service On April 1st, Maundy Thursday, we will offer a communion class at 4:30pm. This will be designed especially for Children ages 3 to 9. We will learn about communion, practice receiving it, and bake some bread together for the Maundy Thursday Service, where some will receive their First Communion. To register your child, please call the church office April 2 ~ Good Friday 11:00am ~ Community service 6:00pm ~ Worship at East Koshkonong Lutheran Church Good Friday is a day of terrible suffering and sacrifice, a day of crucifixion. We invite you to join hearts and hands in remembrance of He who bore his crown of thorns willingly, arose from the dead, and defeated death that we might have eternal life. April 4 ~ Easter Sunday 6:30am ~ Sunrise Worship at the Upper Church 7:45am - 8:45am ~ Easter Egg Hunt 9:00am ~ Easter Worship at the Lower Church The Lord is risen! Hallelujah! On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the foundation of our faith: the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is with exceeding joy that we welcome all who come to recall Christ s victory over sin and death. Rejoice, dear friends! 2 Intern's Insight ~ Nathan Strong Charles Schulz, author and illustrator of Peanuts, has often been a source of life lessons. There are times that I feel like Charlie Brown, Linus Van Pelt, Schroeder or in the case here, I feel like Snoopy. There are often times, things do not happen the way I think that they should happen. I will go to do something, only to find more challenges or obstacles that get in my way. Snoopy is able to carry his dog dish to the faucet only to be met with the challenge of turning on the faucet. Something that proves quite difficult for a dog. Yet while Snoopy went to the source of water, he ended up getting the water from a completely different source. Now my first thought when thinking about this comic strip was how biblical it was. I was reminded of the story of Jesus and the Woman at the Well. The woman comes to the well at noon. Not because she wants to but because she has to; others have looked down upon her and judged her as being unworthy to be associated. She has lived her life with many obstacles and challenges. However, when she came to the well, the source of water, she found the water of life, Jesus. She went to find water and got so much water that it filled her life. Where can we go? Where is our source that we can even attempt to see, hear, and understand God? I think that the answer to that is also shown within the comic strip above, in our everyday acts. In our daily events such as drinking water, eating food, and caring for loved ones. God provides for us. God is active within our daily lives. As we leave the season of Lent, celebrate Easter and lead on into the Season of Pentecost, we are reminded of the source of our new life. We turn to the source, the cross that Christ died upon for our sins. How does that work? Well as Snoopy says in the last frame, "I am going to have to sit and think about how that works." However, can we really understand God's love and grace for us, or do we accept them and be grateful for them? Page 2

3 Prayer and Practicing Resurrection A favorite poem of mine by Wendell Berry ends with very simple, profound instruction. "Practice resurrection." Eugene Peterson, a favorite theologian of mine, in his "conversations in spiritual theology" series, borrows the phrase for the title of his book. He calls it Practicing Resurrection: A Conversation on Growing Up in Christ (Eerdmans, 2010). I love his books. Some of you may be familiar with Peterson because he translated the bible in a version called The Message that is popular. You can find it in any book store. The book is an example of close biblical exegesis (in this case, an extended commentary on Ephesians), a work of semi-systematic theology, and a devotional work. All five books are worth time and attention, but this one, together with the first and fourth volumes, have been my favorites. Midway into the book, Peterson has this to say about prayer: "We pray when we are meditatively quiet before God with Psalm 118 open before us; we pray while taking out the garbage; we pray when we are losing our grip and then ask God for help; we pray when we are weeding the garden; we pray when we are asking God to help a friend who is at the end of her rope; we pray when we are writing a letter; we pray when we are in conversation with our cynical and bullying boss; we pray with our friends in church; we pray walking down main street in the company of strangers. I am not saying that everything we do is prayer, but that everything we do and say and think can be prayer. It seems to have been that way with Paul. I am also saying that many of us pray far more than we are aware that we are praying. We pray when we are not in a conventional place of prayer. We pray when we are not using the conventional language of prayer. I am saying that "always to pray, and not to faint" (Luke 18:1 KJV) happens a lot, unnoticed and unremarked." As a Christian and pastor, I strive to designate formal and set times for prayer, and make use of the traditional language of prayer when I do so--at meals, in the daily prayer office, etc. However, I praise God whenever somebody reminds me of how broad a thing prayer can be, all the way out to prayer as "the total experience of the Christian man or woman" (Martin Thornton, Pastoral Theology, 1965). Examples include a friend who told me he considers listening to John Coltrane and Art Blakey as some of his best prayer time; friends who pray when they wash dishes; my own prayers while I run or exercise; the impromptu brief prayers we do with the kids; prayer as simply breathing. So take a deep breath some time today, maybe even fifteen of them, and imagine them as prayer. Or simply let yourself trust that in some ways even beyond your imagining, you are praying in the Spirit because God in the Spirit has promised to do that for you. Everything we do and say and think can be prayer. Practice resurrection. [this column is excerpted from Pastor Clint's blog, which you can read at Page 3

5 (continued from Page 4) Discussion took place about the annual meeting scheduled for Sunday. Peggy and Steve will take care of the tables in the Narthex. Council will bring treats for the meeting. Council members should plan on meeting after the annual meeting. The leak in the roof (bell tower) still cannot be handled until the snow melts. Positive test results have come in for the drinking water. We will need to have it tested again and pass another test before we are considered good to go. What does growth look like? Council had an interesting discussion about what we talked and prayed about this past month. With new people and new ideas come changes. This may be perceived as good and/or bad. We need to find a goal to strive for which may keep us focused especially when we get into the New Year. The council needs to make sure the growth goals are measurable. This seemed to be the hardest part. ATC We received correspondence from Dave Davies with some specific due dates. Peggy will get the committee that worked on the power line easement language together to discuss Mr. Davies letter. Jens Nottestad sent an update on his campus ministries. Brian Gunnelson brought a request for Go Therefore Orphan Ministries for a donation of $2,000. Trudy made a motion to table this request until next month. Motion passed. Discussion took place concerning Jonathan Rundman/Luther Snow concert and congregational retreat tentatively scheduled for April 11, There was concern about the date as April 11 may conflict with the various school districts Easter Break. Concern was also expresses about the money for Luther Snow and our 2010 budget. Steve made a motion to try to schedule May 23 as a first choice and May 2 as an alternative for Jonathan Rundman to come to EKLC for a concert. We will not schedule Luther Snow at this time but consider alternative retreat ideas or leadership ideas for our congregation and/or leadership. Motion passed. There was a short discussion about Fred Rogers. IPOY The meeting ended with the Lord s Prayer. Page 5

7 WELCA REPORT Joy Circle may not have many members pinning and sewing BUT they sure have a lot who are active in Sunday School and Church Council. They were in charge of activities in March. They arranged for the coffee and pot luck on March 4. Bev Lien conducted the business meeting. Other members helped the altar committee chairmen, Marge Stach, Jane Furseth, and Linda Mathison provide flowers and carry out altar duties. They also, provided ushers for the month. Thanks, Ladies! At the meeting six quilts were completed with twelve ready to be sewn. Harriet Eikland, Bonnie Ehrke and Lois Zerkle brought in quilt tops they had pieced together and Diane Luginbuhl had made a crib blanket. The quilters were pleased to donate a quilt to the jail chaplain for the Annual Quilt Auction. Please, note that our treasury is lower than it should be. We still want to support those projects we have supported in the past. Coffee Hour funds should be donated towards our mission, The Lindstrom Bible Translators in New Guinea. Two dates should be on our calendars. May 14 th and 15 th : A RETREAT at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Watertown. This will include the Milwaukee synods so it will be a good time to get acquainted with our sisters outside. May 18, 2010 Christian Fish Fry, Fireside at 10:30 am. Cost $35.00 Reservations to Jo Lee by April 4, Loyalty Circle with Belva Anderson and Alma Houfe in charge will meet on April 1 at 9:00am for pin and sew, coffee, and potluck. If you've ever been up for service on Wednesday evenings, you probably have seen the energy and joy that is present in our confirmation group. In fact, our confirmation youth program not only helps develop the faith of our youth and build community--it's also attractive enough that our confirmands often invite their friends (we average 2-3 friends visiting per week!), and high schoolers stay and help with confirmation simply because they love the program so much. So thanks also to high school helpers like Dylan Agnew, Zach Woodstock, Thianna Wegner, Lena Zahn and Hannah Kaare, all who help with our program as well. Please continue to pray for our confirmation program. It is our special prayer that our whole congregation and parents will also connect with the confirmation program and the youth, and that the vibrancy of faith and joy in our group would be infectious for our congregation as a whole. 12 New This Month at Your Church Library: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. This is the true story of William Kamkwamba, born in a village in Malawi, a country where only 2% of people have electricity and running water. As a boy, he is inspired by a picture of a windmill he sees in an English textbook and constructs a windmill out of scrap metal, tractor parts and bicycle parts. The other villagers call him crazy, but in the end he succeeds in bringing water and electricity to his village. This inspirational book was on many Top 10 lists for 2009, including Amazon.com and Publishers Weekly. Churched: One Kid s Journey toward God Despite a Holy Mess, by Matthew Paul Turner. In a Starred Review, Publishers Weekly says: It s tough to do a guy-meets-jesus book and not be too pious for some and/or too heretical for others. Landis walks a line somewhere between in this ambitious and lyrical story of a young veteran returning to his New Hampshire home from the Iraq War [The Last Day] is worth a dozen Shacks. The Faith Club: a Muslim, a Christian, a Jew three women search for understanding, by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner.
