2 Welcome. W e re glad to gather together as a community of faith today. No matter where you are on the journey of faith, you are welcome here to join in worship and service. All are invited to a time of refreshment and conversation immediately following worship, hosted today by Angela Hall. Please turn off all cellular phones, pagers and wat ch alarms during worship. Please refrain from using flash photography during the worship service. If you are seated on the aisle, and the sanctuary is filling with people, kindly move toward the center of the pew, allowing others to enter and join the community with the least disturbance to others. Thank you. Child Careis available on the lower lever for infants/t oddlers and pre-school. 3 Festival of the trees Reflection Before Worship Child of Bethlehem, city of peace, you have loved us without condition, in our greatness and in our misery, in our folly and in our virtue; may your hand be always upon us and may your heart be within us so that we too may become bread and peace for one another. Order of Worship *those who are able, please stand *GATHERING HYMN No. 218 Good Christian Friends, Rejoice ANNOUNCEMENTS. JOYS & CONCERNS, REGISTRATION IN DULCI JUBILO INTERLUDE Three Nöels for Organ JOHN FERGUSON Twas in the Moon of Wintertime What Is This Lovely Fragrance? Cold December Flies Away CALL TO W ORSHIP REV. BOB KAISER L: Behold! God is good, and has set a star in the heavens to guide us to the truth. P: W e follow it with joy, knowing that God will give us strength to climb the hills, and sight to conquer the darkness. L: Behold! God is good, and has promised us a Savior to lead us to righteousness. P: W e await the Savior s coming with gladness and with expectation that in the holy birth our lives may be renewed Lighting the Advent Wreath Second Sunday of Advent The candle of Love Last Sunday we lit the candle of joy. W e light it and the candles of hope and peace again as we remember that Christ, who was born in Bethlehem, fulfills all of God s promises and brings us everlasting peace and joy. The fourth candle of Advent is the candle of love. God s love is a perfect love. It holds nothing back. God, in love, gives us everything we need to live a life of hope and peace. This is what love is like: love is patient, love is kind and envies no one. Love is never boastful or conceit ed, rude or selfish. Love is not quick to take offense, it keeps no records of wrongs, it does not gloat over other people s troubles, but rejoices in the right, the good and the true. There is nothing that love cannot face, there is no limit to its faith, to its hope, to its endurance. Love never ends. W e light the candle of love to remind us that Jesus brings us God s love and shows us how to love others. -3-

4 UNISON PRAYER Love is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at this candle we cele-brate the love we find in Jesus Christ. Let us pray: Dear God, as our Advent pilgrimage draws to completion, grant us the courage to share your love. Love for the unexpected challenge in our lives, love for the vulnerable one in our midst. Love for the presence of God in all creation. Amen *HYM N No. 223 (vs. 1-3) The First Nowell THE FIRST NOW ELL PRAYER OF CONFESSION (U NISON ) ZOE SULLIVAN As followers of Christ, we are always on a journey. On our pilgrimage there is no time when we can afford to stop growing in love, in strength, and in knowledge of God. So it is that when we gather to worship we must confess those places in which we need to grow. In preparation for the coming of the Christ, let us confess our need for growth, in silence before God. ASSURANCE of PARDON ZOE SULLIVAN The good news in Christ is that when we face ourselves and God with the awareness of our need, we are given grace to grow, and courage to conti nue the journey. Amen SONG of PRAISE and GLORY Hymn No. 198 verse 2 Joy to the world! The Savior reigns: let us our songs employ; while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
