We re glad to gather together as a community of faith today. No matter where you are on the journey of faith, you are welcome here to join in worship and service. All are invited to a time of refreshment and conversation immediately following worship, hosted today by Patty Mayer. If you are new to this community of faith, we rejoice in your presence with us. Remember, we re not strangers, but rather friends who journey together, following the Lord Jesus Christ. If you are a newcomer, we invite you to sign the pew pad. Please turn off all cellular phones, pagers and watch alarms during worship. Please refrain from using flash photography during the worship service. If you are seated on the aisle, and the sanctuary is filling with people, kindly move toward the center of the pew, allowing others to enter and join the community with the least disturbance to others. Thank you. CHILD CARE is available on the lower lever for infants/toddlers and pre-school. Two child-care attendants staff the infant/toddler room and parent volunteers staff the preschool/kindergarten room during services. If you are able to assist in the care of our children, please contact the church office. LARGE PRINT BIBLES are available from the ushers upon request. Prayer of Preparation God most compassionate and merciful, we thank you that you have come to us in Jesus the Servant-Christ, whose disciples we are. Make us strong in your strength, make us wise in your wisdom, and make us gentle in your compassion. May we be signs of the human unity you seek to accomplish through the cross of Jesus Christ, that your name may be glorified in all the earth. Amen. Order of Worship *Those who are able, please stand *GATHERING HYMN No. see insert on page 11 ANNOUNCEMENTS, JOYS AND CONCERNS, AND REGISTRATION INTERLUDE Meditation on Job 11: 18 CHARLES CALLAHAN Job 11:18 You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. CALL TO WORSHIP EARL REPP L: Gracious God, we struggle to understand your mysteries. P: We cannot fathom the limits of your power! L: If we devote our hearts to you and stretch out our hands to you, and stand firm in our faith, P: you promise to lift us from our fears and walk with us. L: God, you have promised to be our wisdom and power. P: Be the light that guides us out of darkness and be our true hope.
3 PRAYER OF PRAISE (UNISON) EARL REPP Gracious God, to you belongs all wisdom and power, counsel and understanding. We know that our beliefs are not flawless, that we are not pure in your sight. We cannot fathom the mysteries or the limits of your power, O God, for they are higher than the heavens and deeper than the depths of the grave. Yet we pray that you would help us put away the sin in our heart and allow no evil to be there. Help us to stand firm before you. Help us to be secure in your love, for within it there is hope. We praise you this day, the One who is all glory, honor and praise. Amen. *HYMN No. 153 Whate er My God Ordains Is Right WAS GOTT THUT PRAYER OF CONFESSION (UNISON) DOTTIE YODER O God, we confess that our experiences of suffering make us doubt your promise and power. In the depth of our darkness, we do not see your Light. In our isolation, we do not feel your nearness. Forgive us, God. For you gave up your own Son for us, and never promised a world without suffering, but that you would bear us through it. Cleanse us of all bitterness and doubt, and renew us in your merciful Spirit. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON DOTTIE YODER Jesus has said, As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world... for judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind. As we confess our sins to God in Christ s name, he intercedes on our behalf as we are awakened from death to the hope of new life. SONG OF PRAISE AND GLORY - Hymn No. 446 verse 1 My faith looks up to thee, thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine now hear me while I pray; take All my guilt away; O let me from this day be wholly thine! OLD TESTAMENT LESSON I Samuel 16: 1-13 EARL REPP ANTHEM Ubi Caritas Ola Gjeilo Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincere. Amen Where charity and love are, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us revere and love the living God. And from a sincere heart let us love one another. Amen WORDS with CHILDREN FROM CHILDREN S WORKSHOP followed by THE LORD S PRAYER pg. 570 hymnal K-7TH GRADES LEAVE ONTARIO VIEW STREET DOOR FOR CHILDREN S WORKSHOP
4 NEW TESTAMENT LESSON John 9: 1-41 DOTTIE YODER PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & SILENT PRAYER DOTTIE YODER AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We believe in the love of God that forms the basis for all human love: The love parents have for their children, The love children have for their parents, The love of friends who really care, And every little act of kindness bestowed as a gift in the human community. We believe that God loved the world through Christ, who showed what it means to love another by laying down his life for all those who would come after him, even in our own time. We believe that love will eventually triumph in the world, despite all envy, hate and greed, despite wars and rumors of war, and despite the fact that it seems so rare. For love is of God and God is love, and God will not rest until all are reconciled in love. OFFERING DOXOLOGY - hymn #556 PRAYER OF DEDICATION (UNISON) Lord, we remember before this table the poor and hungry of the world, and worship you now by sharing what we have with them. Take our gifts and give them wings to bring hope to a weary world. Through Christ, who commanded us to love one another. Amen. *COMMUNION HYMN No. 620 All Glory Be to God on High THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (UNISON) Lord Jesus Christ, you have put your life into our hands; now we put our lives into yours. Take us, renew and remake us. What we have been is past; what we shall be, through you, still awaits us. Lead us on. Take us with you. Amen. *HYMN No. 458 All the Way My Savior Leads Me PLEADING SAVIOR BENEDICTION BENEDICTION RESPONSE POSTLUDE In the Cross of Christ I Glory TIMOTHY ALBRECHT
