2 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 310 Oak Street Irwin, PA Phone No Website: Like us on Facebook Rev. Bruce R. Judy Minister Dianne Runser Director of Music Ministry ******************** The First United Methodist Church of Irwin exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are a community of Believers, centered on Christ, united by God s love, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. From our Pastor My dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, I write this article with a heavy heart. On March 17 we picked up the cutest bundle of joy a brindle Boxer puppy whom we named Bree (which is a combination of my mom s name Betty, with Bonnie s mom s name Ree.) Bree was full of energy and loved to cuddle and give kisses. She would zoom across the room, up my leg and plop down on my chest. Then she would look at me with those big, dark brown eyes, give me a kiss, and take a nap. When you approached her while she was laying down she would roll on her back and spread her legs pet me! Rub my belly! Bree had the cutest back. I could go on and on about this bundle of joy whom we loved so much. Sadly, we had to put our 5 month old puppy to sleep last night June 23, because she had eaten something that gave her an infection and destroyed her intestines. Bree seemed to look at us and say good-bye, perhaps thank you, with those big dark brown eyes and Boxer lip, as she was administered the Rainbow Bridge. We cried and it

3 wasn t the first time. We cried when they came into the room at the veterinarian s office and said Bree was in worse shape than we thought. She was losing blood and her x-ray showed that her intestines were a real mess. Bree had not eaten and was skin and bones. They said they would do surgery but they didn t have much hope. We decided Bree had suffered enough. We cried. After we got home last night we cleaned up her stuff. Today we will put it away. I am crying now. Yes Bree is gone but never forgotten and we are thankful for the joy that she brought into our lives, even if only for a little while. Love is love and it is timeless and love is worth the price you sometimes have to pay. Jesus loves you and He is waiting for you both now and later when we go to Heaven. Ask Jesus into your heart in this life and feel the love that is timeless. God loves you and so do I, Pastor Bruce PTL *************** HOSPITAL CALLS AND VISITS: If you or someone you know is in the hospital or would like a visit from the pastor please call the office or Pastor Bruce. 4 NEWS FROM THE LOFT (THE CHOIR LOFT, THAT IS..) Many people think that these hot, lazy days of summer are a time when nothing is happening in the music department of the church. NOT SO! In many ways, these two months are as busy as the other ten months, maybe even more so. Yes the bell choirs and vocal choirs are taking time off. HOWEVER this is an intense time of planning and preparation for the other ten months of the year. It is a time of music, robe and equipment maintenance. Our media team is working hard to serve all of us. Our drama and dance teams continue to search for new members and plan for the upcoming seasons. Please pray for all of us as we renew ourselves and prepare for fall activities. A special thanks to those persons who have volunteered to provide SPECIAL MUSIC during our summer services. We shall pray for you as you share your talents with all of us. SUMMER PICNIC for the music department (Chancel Choir, SonShiners and Cathedral Bells) will be August 11 in the afternoon at the home of Janet Slack. Current, former and future members and their families are welcome to attend. Everyone please bring a picnic food item to share and bathing suits There will be a sign-up list in the choir room on the piano. CATHEDRAL BELLS will resume rehearsals on Thursday, September 6 at 6:15 PM in the sanctuary. If you would like to ring in the fall, please see Dianne Runser ASAP. We will have many spots to fill. CHANCEL CHOIR will resume rehearsals on Thursday, September 6at 7:15 PM in the sanctuary. We sing at the 10:45 AM service on September 9. If you would like to sing in the fall, please see Dianne Runser ASAP. We will have many spots to fill.. SONSHINERS and TEMPLE CHIMES will resume practicing on Sunday September 9 at 12:15 (immediately after the second service). Bring a friend or two. If your child will be in grades 1 6 in September, please encourage them to try Choir and Chimes in the fall. All of the young singers take home a CD of the season s music in September so that they have it to practice all year long. Parents are welcome at any rehearsal to help those who have trouble reading and to provide snacks after rehearsal. Please see Dianne Runser ASAP so that we may have your shirt made for you or if you or your child have any questions. We hope to be re-forming TAFC. Our youth are the future of our congregation. Please share your leadership abilities by singing in TAFC. Rehearsals will resume on Sunday, September 9. This will be a brief meeting in the sanctuary at 12:15 to determine the best rehearsal time. Bring a friend or two If you plan on becoming a member of the TAFC next year (grades 7 and up), please see Dianne Runser ASAP so that we may have your shirt made for you. DANCE TEAM and WESLEY PLAYERS are looking for members. If you have the acting bug or you would like to dance with our dance team, please see Dianne Runser for details about getting involved with these ministries. Adults are welcome and, indeed, are encouraged to take part. SOUND/MEDIA TEAM is seeking new members to work at the sound booth at both services. This is a vital service to our congregation. Without your help, not only will we be unable to hear during our services, but we will also be unable to record our services for those unable to attend. If you have an attention to detail and wish to serve behind the scenes, please contact Josh Burger, Dianne Runser or any member of the sound team if you would like to start your training. RECORDINGS OF OUR WORSHIP SERVICES AVAILABLE A recording is made of each 10:45 AM worship service and special services. You may request a CD copy of any service, either for yourself or to mail to someone else. We ask for a $1.00 donation if you are picking up the tape or CD at the church, or a $2.00 donation if you would like it to be mailed. This helps to defray the cost of the service. See Dianne to order. Orders may also be place on the church web site. A full recording of each service (or just the sermon) may also be downloaded from the church website. HEARING ASSIST DEVICES AVAILABLE We have a few wireless hearing assistance devices available for use during our worship services. If you would benefit from use of one of these devices during a service, please see an usher and they will get a device for you use that day. The device consists of a small pocket-sized receiver with a wire running to an ear piece. We currently have four devices to loan during a service. Our system can support up to 100 receivers. If you would like to purchase a receiver of your own, which you could bring with you to the services and which would be used by only you, please contact the church office, Dianne Runser, or one of the trustees.

Contact Laurie Saporito at or cts72@hotmail.com THE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Donna Weber ( ) Dot Depp ( ) Meetings will resume in September UNITED METHODIST MEN Mike Andrison, President ( ) Meetings will resume in September The Rick Simms Memorial Work Trip 2018 DEAR CHURCH FAMILY, WE RE WRITING THIS TO YOU JUST ONE DAY AFTER RETURNING FROM ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL WORK TRIP PROJECT FOR HEART & HAND IN PHILIPPI, WV. THIS YEAR WE BUILT A 12 X 24 STORAGE BUILDING FOR THE MARKET

13 PLACE ONE OF H&H S OUTREACH MINISTRIES. 26 TEAM MEMBERS ANSWERED THE CALL THIS YEAR. HOWEVER, FOUR OF THEM WERE NOT ABLE TO EITHER MAKE THE TRIP AT ALL OR HAD TO LEAVE DUE TO ILLNESS ON THE SECOND DAY. THAT LEFT 22 UNTIL FRIDAY AFTER DINNER AND 21 ON SATURDAY MORNING BECAUSE OF PREDETERMINED DEPARTURE TIMES. 6 OF THE 21 WERE YOUTH AND 3 WERE THE KITCHEN CREW. SO, IF YOU DO THE MATH ON SATURDAY MORNING THERE WERE ONLY 12 ADULTS TO TAKE ON THE REMAINING TASKS COMPLETING THE PROJECT. OUR DEADLINE WAS 1:30 PM TO BE OFF THE SITE AND GETTING READY TO START TO THE UNIVERSITY TO SHOWER BEFORE HEADING FOR HOME. THE LAST ROOF RIDGE CAP WAS PLACED AT APPROX. 1:40PM AND THE BREAKDOWN OF THE WORK STATIONS WAS ALREADY UNDERWAY. WE HAD ALSO BEEN HAMPERED BY NUMEROUS RAIN SHOWERS AND DOWNPOURS OVER THE THREE AND A HALF DAYS KEEPING US SCRAMBLING TO KEEP TOOLS AND THE BUILDING AS DRY AS POSSIBLE. THERE WASN T ANY MUD THIS YEAR, BUT, PUDDLES IN THE PARKING LOT WERE ABUNDANT. WITH THE LOSS OF FOUR TEAM MEMBER EARLY, IT ALLOWED MANY OF THE OTHERS TO STEP UP AND DO WHAT WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE BEEN DONE BY ONE OF THE FOUR. IT SPREAD THE GROUP A BIT THINNER BUT, ALSO ALLOWED NEW SKILLS TO BE LEARNED AND CHALLENGED US AS A TEAM TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD THINKING POSSITIVELY!! AS ALWAYS, THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC AND PLENTIFUL PERPARED WITH LOVE AND CARING. THANKS TO PATTY, DIANE, CLARA AND THE OTHER COOKS AND BAKERS FOR ALL THE NOURISHING DELICIOUS MEALS. JACK, THE SITE COORDINATOR: I WAS PROUD OF EACH OF THE MEMBERS AS THEY CHECKED OFF TASK AFTER TASK ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WHAT WAS NEXT. AS IN ANY TEAM THERE ARE MEMBERS WHO HAVE GREATER KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES. IF ONE OR TWO OF THOSE MEMBERS CAN T BE THERE FOR WHATEVER THE REASON, THERE S AN EFFECT ON PROGRESS. BUT, WHEN MEMBERS WHO MIGHT NEVER HAVE DONE A TASK, ACCEPT NEW CHALLENGES AND LEARN NEW SKILLS, EVERYONE BENEFITS. WE WERE THERE TO HELP OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY OF PHILIPPI AND FOUND OURSELVES HELPING OTHERS AMONG OUR OWN TEAM. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNDERSTANDABLE TO HAVE TAKEN THE EASY WAY OUT LEAVING THE TASKS AND PROJECT UNDONE. WALKING AWAY BECAUSE OF A DEADLINE THAT WAS SET BEFORE WE LEFT OUR HOMES WEDNESDAY MORNING. TIRED, WET FROM SWEAT & RAIN, DIRTY FROM THE SAWDUST AND SHINGLE GRIT, THE TEAM PUSHED THROUGH TO COMPLETION. SO VERY PROUD!! WE HOPE YOU FOLLOWED OUR PROGRESS ON FACEBOOK AND/OR THE CHURCH S WEBSITE THANKS TO JOSH BURGER. WE WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN THE MANY WAYS THAT WERE AFFORDED TO YOU AS A CHURCH FAMILY, AS WELL AS INDIVIDUALS/GROUPS. PRAYERS WERE BEING ANSWERED EACH HOUR OF THE DAYS AWAY FROM YOU AND HOME. GOOD NEWS -- NO ONE REQUIRED MEDICAL TREATMENT WHILE ON THE SITE OR IN THE FOOD PREPARATION. FELLOWSHIP TIME AND GETTING TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER THIS YEAR WAS A NICE CHANGE DUE TO THE NEW FORMAT OF WEDNESDAY TO SATURDAY. BUT, RETURNING HOME ON SATURDAY EVENING EXHAUSTED, MADE IT QUITE A CHORE TO GET UP AND OUT TO TALK WITH YOU ON SUNDAY MORNING. WE WANT YOU EACH TO KNOW JUST HOW BLESSED WE ARE AS A CHURCH BECAUSE OF THIS OUTREACH MINISTRY. THE TEAM MEMBERS REPRESENTED 5 DIFFERENT CHURCH FAMILIES THIS YEAR. THE THEME OF THE 26 TH TRIP WAS REDEEMED BY GRACE CALLED TO SERVE. MAY IT BE SO IN EACH OF YOUR LIVES THIS DAY AND EVERY DAY UNTIL THE COMING OF CHRIST. KNOW THAT OUR LOVE FOR JESUS MUST BE EXPRESSED IN SERVITUDE TO Work Trip, Cont d. OTHERS. LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU JESUS COMMANDED. ONE OF THE DEVOTIONS WE DID AFTER OUR EVENING MEAL INCLUDED THE SINGING OF THE SONG I VE GOT THE JOY JOY JOY JOY (DOWN IN MY HEART). THE CHORUS REMINDS US THAT IF WE HAVE THE LOVE OF JESUS IN OUR HEARTS WE LL BE SO HAPPY, SO VERY HAPPY!!!!! WHAT A JOY TO HAVE ALL OF YOU AND JESUS LOVE DOWN OUR HEARTS. GOD BLESS WORK TRIP COORDINATORS, PATTY & JACK OSTERMAN
