3 St. Anne s News & Events JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Edward of Cross Catholic Outreach will be visiting our parish next weekend to speak at all the Masses on behalf of the poor in developing countries. Cross Catholic Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes here in America and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia Central and South America. We are excited to have him visit! St. Anne s conference will again participate in The Friends of the Poor Walk. Last year we raised over $ This year we would like to set our goal a little higher. We feel with your support WE CAN! We are having a parish wide sign-up day THIS WEEKEND and NEXT WEEKEND. Ministry Leaders, see how much we can raise for such a worthwhile cause. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Anne s conference needs your help. Plans are underway to promote The Annual Friends of the Poor Walk. This is a unique fundraising effort organized nationally and locally by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The walk will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Catholic High School, on North W Street, to raise funds for use in direct service to the poor. All funds raised will be used locally! Now is the time for individuals, community groups and corporations to commit their participation. Join us at this event to celebrate the poor and honor those caring individuals who work directly in the community to bring about a healthy change for men, women and children to live and grow as God intended. 5 What s happening this summer? Five Fun Activities for Catholic Families 1. PUT AWAY THE TECHNOLOGY - For a whole DAY! Seriously! DO IT! 2. VISIT A SHRINE Take your family on a little road trip to discover what holy places are nearby. You may be pleasantly surprised at how your children will be spiritually touched by the experience and it can help bond your family. 3. BUILD A MARY GARDEN - Prayer gardens allow someone a time in solitude to pray and meditate, and it sets a tone for the space that surrounds it. Mary gardens can have special flowers, statues, a bench. Make this a family adventure and have everyone chose some part of it to make it special. Once it s complete, pray together as a family, and encourage your visitors to do so. 4. MAKE A TIME CAPSULE - Everyone likes making memories, and even more so, looking back on them later. Put together a capsule with photos, prayer cards, favorite Bible verses that are important in your life right now, or write about your favorite saint and why he/she is your favorite. Next year, or a few years from now, you will be able to look back and see how far your faith journey has come! 5. CREATE A SCAVENGER HUNT - Invite friends over and creatively ponder ways to get people moving outdoors. There are many online ideas to help teach your friends and family about our FAITH! Annual Ladies Retreat 2018 July 12 July 15, 2018 Visitation Monastery, Mobile AL The ladies of the Diocese of PensacolaTallahassee have sponsored this annual July retreat for more than 25 years. Father Samuel Fontana, Assistant Dean of Students and Instructor of Philosophy, at St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict, Louisiana, will conduct the silent retreat.
