EUCHARISTIC ADORATION DAY 24-hour adoration begins the second Wednesday of the month at the 9:00AM Mass. DEVOTIONS & BENEDICTION Wednesday evenings at 7:00PM; Vietnamese 2nd Wednesday of the month at 8PM. Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Benediction. 2 JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. If you did not receive information about the PSA in the mail, there are brochures and pledge envelopes available in the Church or in the Parish Office. # Participating families: 324 Amount of pledges: $137,503 Payments received: $85,153 Once we reach our diocesan goal of $111,000, all monies over that amount will be returned to St. Nicholas to help pay for the parking lot project. Dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the Feast of the birth of John the Baptist. This occurs six months before the birth of Jesus and is attributed to the fact that Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth while she was expecting to deliver her child. In the gospel today, we hear of the naming of John. Although his name went against the custom of the time, Zechariah his father wrote the name John on the tablet. With that Zechariah regained his voice. This event took place and all of the people knew that this child was destined for a specific purpose and that he would be the voice of God in the future. John came to point the way to the Lord Jesus and we must do the same. It is important for us to acknowledge the birth of John because of his role in pointing the way to Jesus. As John prepared the way for Jesus, he said; I must decrease so that He may increase. As we have just experienced the beginning of summer when the light in the day begins to decrease, so to do we recognize the role of John. When we celebrate Jesus birth, the opposite effect takes place. The days are going from least amount of light to a daily increase. As the Lord Jesus increases in our life, we are invited like John to acknowledge Him and point Him out to the world we live in. 4 SCHOOL OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Registration for Elementary and High School Religion Classes are NOW OPEN! Come to the SRE Office in the Parish Center Mondays through Thursdays from 9am to noon and 1pm to 4:30pm. 1 st through 6 th grades: Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday 4:15pm to 5:30pm 7 th & 8 th grades: Tuesday evenings, 7pm to 8:30pm Confirmation I and II Classes: Alternate Tuesdays, 7pm to 8:30pm I We will be in the courtyard (large parking lot side) the weekend of July 28 & 29 th after all the Masses. The School of Religion is looking for people (men, women, confirmed teens, parents or grandparents) who would be willing to volunteer in our faith formation program for children. You don t have to be a teacher, theologian or have a lot of experience with children. But, if you... want to be a good role model for children enjoy being around children want to help them develop a relationship with God grow in your own relationship with God, enrich your own spirituality...then being a teacher or teacher s aide might be just what God is calling you to be! The original piece is being restored and will be gone for about 2 months. Once this piece is returned, the image of the Blessed Mother will be restored.
