H ighlights Chevy Chase United Methodist Church CCUMC is helping to fulfill the Christmas wishes of several local families through A Wider Circle. A Christmas tree has been set up in the Wesley Room where you will find ornaments listing a recipient (both adults and children) and his or her holiday gift wishes. Everyone is invited to take one or more ornaments and then to purchase and donate the gifts through the church. If you take an ornament, you must find the name of the person on the signup sheet next to the tree, and write in your name, , and telephone number. Please note that all gifts must be wrapped and tagged with the recipient s name and returned to the church office or placed under the tree by Sunday, December 17 at 10:30 am. They will then be delivered to A Wider Circle for distribution. Contact Paul Tiao for more information at paultiao@aol.com. Contact Bob Levering (301) or bob.levering@gmail.com about contributions for the potluck reception which will follow the concert.. This Christmas season, our church will be supporting the Neighborhood Partnerships Program in Highland Dwellings run by A Wider Circle (AWC). This program works to end poverty in a Southeast DC neighborhood called Highland Dwellings and Additions, where 100% of the residents live in poverty and average family income comes to just over $12,000 a year. Within the Highlands community, AWC will focus on education and workforce readiness, developing long-term support networks, assuring quality housing and basic needs, and helping to create a safe and vibrant neighborhood. Our Christmas goal at CCUMC is to raise $10,000 for AWC s work in Highland Dwellings -- an amount that will make a significant impact in the community. The first $5,000 in donations will be matched by an anonymous donor. Please consider what you re able to give this Christmas season to bless the lives of those in Highland Dwellings and Additions. A Wider Circle is working to end poverty one household at a time. Based in Silver Spring, MD, A Wider Circle helps furnish homes, provides interview and job training, mentors individuals seeking to end the cycle of poverty, and fosters community relationships that transcend class, race, and inequality. January 7: Communion Offering On Sunday, January 7 you are invited to make an additional gift for the United Methodist Church s Global Migration Sunday offering. There are 65 million people displaced in the world today. That s more than at any other time since WWII. The UMC s response to this crisis is Global Migration Sunday, a day of prayer and generosity to raise awareness and funds to aid migrants and refugees. 3 We humans are narrative beings. We love to hear stories, we love to tell stories, and we find meaning and purpose in stories. A positive story can do great things for us - if we believe people support us then we ll feel encouraged and able to do good things. Conversely, a negative story can do us great harm - if we believe we are forever broken or that there are people who want to see us fail then we may not feel confident or able to overcome our challenges. Not all stories are equal. I enjoy watching the new Ducktales cartoon with my kids, but I m not going to ask Huey, Dewey or Louie for advice anytime soon. Instead, we all have a series of stories that hold the most influence over us. Perhaps there is a family story, one that may even be passed on for several generations, that reminds you who you are (maybe you recall a parent saying This is who we are, which is why we don t do x, y or z ). Or maybe the fact that you attended a particular college or university shapes a key part of your identity, whether that s because of your degree program or the mentors who prepared you for your current vocation. It s been said that the Christian life is like being an actor in a three-act-play who is given a script with acts 1 and 3 written (the beginning and the end) but must improvise all of act 2. We know how we got here and in faith we trust God will complete all things for the good. But today we live in the mystery of a story that is still unfolding to its end. If you are like me, you already have your tickets for the Episode XIII: The Last Jedi, the next Star Wars installment. There are plenty of reasons to enjoy the Star Wars saga, including it s heavy influence from Joseph Campbell (a leading thinker on mythology in our time), as well as the clunky yet lovable dialogue, iconic characters, and ongoing debates about the merits (or redeeming qualities) of the prequel trilogy. One of my favorite things about Star Wars is that this intergalactic struggle of good over evil is told through the intimate and relatable stories of individual characters. There are grand forces at work yet the only thing that matters is whether individual characters are willing to live for themselves or for others. For better or for worse (depending on your perspective), Star Wars is one of those stories that informs contemporary ethics and morality. As author and Star Wars fan Caleb Grimes puts it, when those of us who enjoy Star Wars become angry, we often remember the scene in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back when Yoda says, Anger, fear, aggression - these are paths to the dark side. And for many Christians and Star Wars fans, it s probably the case that we think of that line from Yoda before remembering how Jesus said, My peace I give to you and Love your enemies. In the practice of faith, we are invited to claim the biblical witness of God s love as a defining story. The stories of creation, Israel s deliverance from slavery, the redemptive call of the prophets, and the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, are all meant to tell us that we are loved by a God who acts decisively for all creation (even the galaxies far, far away). The story of Advent and Christmas - the anticipation and arrival of Christ among us - is a key episode in the Christian story of good overcoming evil. We will hear again of the light that shines in the darkness and which the darkness cannot overcome. This is the light of God that brings hope, love, and direction to us and to the movement of history. I hope you will join us for worship this December as we move through the seasons of Advent and Christmas with a little help from Star Wars. To slightly alter another famous line from Star Wars, I don t have a very bad feeling about this! I believe this will be more than entertaining, it will be stirring and exciting. Because that is how all great stories should make us feel, especially when the story renews our hope that good will overcome evil and the light shines among us. May the force be with you, Pastor Kirkland
Growing up in the church I was told that Advent was the season of preparation for baby Jesus. In retrospect, this might have been just to get me to be quiet while in church. As I ve gotten older and explored more theology and doctrine of the church, Advent has taken on deeper meaning in my life. The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means coming or visit. Advent is that time where we are celebrating and even preparing for the birth of Jesus In the long view of history, the season of Advent is sandwiched between the experiences of the Israelite people longing for a Messiah and our world which is full of contention, starving for hope. Advent reminds us of how much we also need our Savior, even as we prepare to celebrate Christ s arrival at Christmas. Yet, given the traditions of Christmas in the United States, we spend most of our time preparing for the demands of the season rather than the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child. We have to buy lots of presents for lots of people and make sure they are all wrapped and delivered. We have parties to attend and parties to host. We have relatives who come to visit or, alternatively, we are the relatives who go elsewhere to visit. This requires lots of planning, not to mention energy. We have to send out Christmas cards, making sure our addresses are right and that all the envelopes get stamped and sent off in time. And so on, and so on, and so on. With all of this Jesus faces heavy competition from retailers, relatives, and revelers. Why does Advent matter so much to me? I found that Advent is the balm to the age-old problem of our social and cultural rhythms during Christmas. We can remember that Christmas is, most of all, a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It s a season that focuses on the meaning of the Incarnation - that God becomes one of us so that we may fully know God. Each season in the Christian calendar has a designated color that helps set the seasons apart from each other. Advent s color is purple, which is often associated with royalty. Christ s birth is a royal event that invites us to receive Jesus as the Lord of our life and the ultimate power we follow. This royal power is the source of Christian hope, which calls us to remain hopeful in our time and to become hope for others. If you see me wearing purple I hope you know why. Brad, Director of Youth and Children s Ministry P.S. Here s a fun fact: The Christian season of Christmas begins on Christmas Eve and lasts for twelve days, ending on January 6, making it one of the shortest Christian seasons. December December 3 - Hope Anticipation December 10 - Movie Night (A New Hope) Expectation December 17-5 pm. Advent Concert and potluck December 24 - Christmas Eve Family Service No Youth Group December 31 New Year s Eve - no Youth Group January January 7 - Hope with Pastor Kirkland January 14 Game Night January 21 Hope January ROCK Retreat: No Youth Group In Youth Group, over the next couple of months we will explore the theological underpinnings of Hope. It is hope which sustains and carries each believer through life. As stated in 1 Peter 1:3, Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It is hope that changes us, hope that changes the world. The theology of hope advocates active participation in the world to speed the coming of that better world. If you have any questions about the Youth Group or know of someone we should invite into the group please Brad at bkenn@chevychaseumc.org or call him at the church: ext. 14.
On the evening of Saturday, December 2, the co-ed Venture Crew of Troop 255 will be offering babysitting at the church for a modest fee. Drop your kids off anytime between 6-10 pm in Phillips Hall to spend time with the crew who are all experienced babysitters. They will provide snacks, games, and fun! 7 We shopped... The Bazaar We ate... We made merry! A great time was had by all at the Holiday Bazaar. The sale was a huge success raising over $13,000 for mission work. The UMW (United Methodist Women) are very grateful that so many church members participated. Not only did we have over 50 volunteers present the day of the sale, but we also had help in other ways. Thank you to those of you who donated your items, baked for the bake sale, made wonderful pecans and jelly, made delicious chili, worked in the cafe, offered items and events for the Silent Auction, worked to set up, sort, clean, and price items, provided pizza and lunches for the workers, wrote letters, made flyers and hung signs, typed price lists and auction descriptions, worked on advertising, took pictures, decorated, contacted vendors, worked as cashiers, took charge of rooms, shopped for supplies, counted money, ran to the bank, invited your friends, came early, and stayed late, packed up, delivered leftovers to other charities, and attended the sale. It was such a treat to have a visit from Santa, and to see our church so full of warmth and cheer.
Programs and Lunch for Seniors (PALS) will have a holiday gathering on Monday, December 11, at 11:00 am, in the Epworth Room. There will be a special program of music and a delicious holiday meal served for a nominal cost of $5.00. Everyone is welcome! No age limit! A special Christmas program will be provided by Janet Edmonds, harpist, who will be playing some familiar Christmas tunes, and a few less familiar tunes, on her folk harp. She has played her harp for churches and for several retirement communities in the area for many years. We will also hear her personal story about how she came to be a harpist. This will be an opportunity to relax and listen to gentle Christmas music in the midst of the hurry of the Christmas Season. If you have any questions, please contact the church office at (301) Get wonderful, fresh pecans for your Christmas baking. Harvested in South Carolina in November, they are much fresher than those you buy in the stores. Wonderful for gifts during the holidays and for freezing for your year's baking supply, one pound bag is $12 and $3 of that goes to UMW missions. They will be on sale in the Wesley Room during coffee hour until gone. Our distribution of CCUMC Care Bags to the homeless continues to be a very successful project. Winter is coming and it s time to include socks in our bags. New clean and dry socks are very important for homeless people. They are prone to cold wet feet which contribute to infections and illness. Those with diabetes are particularly prone to serious foot problems. Donations may be placed in the basket in the art gallery marked Donations. For more information, contact Paul Tiao at paultiao@aol.com. January 15, 2018 is a marked as a day of service in commemoration for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. You are encouraged to volunteer this MLK day as an expression of your own commitment to the beloved community that King called the church and the nation to pursue. CCUMC is partnering with Bethesda United Methodist Church, and other faith communities in the Bethesda- Chevy Chase area, to prepare meals through Rise Against Hunger (riseagainsthunger.org). With a goal of bringing together more than 100 people, in just a few hours volunteers will assemble at least 1,000 meals that will be distributed as aid to the world s most vulnerable. More information about this MLK Day volunteer opportunity will be shared soon. Contact Pastor Kirkland to sign up or for more information. Our next Sunday to feed the homeless in Bethesda is December 17. We re repeating the Christmas meal we provided the last four years that was so loved by the homeless we serve. Dinner will be honey baked hams, mac-n-cheese, a green salad, and we ll serve pie for dessert. Everything can be bought and delivered! I know most of us don t have extra time to be cooking, so please think about what you can buy and deliver. As always, I m willing to deliver items for you if you notify me in advance. Please use the link below to access the SignUp Genius. Let s nourish some souls in time for Christmas! If you have questions, please me at jpettyjohn33@gmail.com or at Jennifer Pettyjohn

Master of nature. Conqueror of demons and death. Jesus not only preached the kingdom of God in word, but he demonstrated it in power through his miraculous deeds. In this six week Bible study, we are taking an in-depth look at the miracles of Jesus that will open our eyes to their impact on the lives he touched, what they reveal about God's heart, and their significance for us today. To understand Jesus' miracles, we need to understand the time, society and the world where the miracles were performed. I promise you that this study will shed new light on your understanding of Jesus' miracles. For the next two months, the study group is meeting in the Wesley Room from 7 pm to 9 pm on Dec. 5, 12, and Jan. 9. Come and join a group of women whose hearts are bent on loving and serving God. You will always leave with new knowledge and an increased awareness of Jesus in your life. For more information call Lois Hendrickson at or loishendrickson@hotmail.com. We are again collecting all those new 2018 calendars you get in the mail. If you get more than you can use from the various organizations you are associated with, please bring them to church and leave them in the office before December 15. The calendars we collect will be donated to Interfaith Works for their clients. Any calendars donated after December 15 will be recycled. On Sunday, December 3 from 12:15 pm to 2:00 pm we will hold a New Members Class in the Wesley Room. This class provides an opportunity to learn more about the church s programs and to meet other people who are new to this community of faith. We provide lunch and childcare for the new members class, and there is no expectation to formally connect with the church through membership if you attend the class. For more information, please contact at the church office, or kreynolds@chevychaseumc.org. Ever asked these questions: What is in the Bible? What does God want me to do in this situation? Am I growing in my faith (and what does it mean to grow in faith)? Disciple Bible study can help you seek answers to these types of questions. Disciple Bible study is a 34-week small group experience that moves through every book in the Bible. Daily readings, reflection questions and weekly group meetings will help you explore your faith by developing a closer relationship with God and others. Since mid-september, the Disciple Bible Study group has been working through the Hebrew Bible (also referred to as the Old Testament, which comprises the first 39 of 66 books in the Bible). You are welcome to join this study at any time, and you may consider joining the group in February when they begin reading the books in the New Testament. Weekly discussion meetings are held on Mondays, from 7:30pm-9pm. Participants are encouraged to attend as many weekly discussion sessions as possible, but it is okay to miss sessions you are unable to attend. There is also a participant book which is available through the church office for the price of twenty dollars.
