PAGE JUlY/AUGUST 2014 VOLUME JULY/AUGUST 19, NUMBER HIGHLIGHTS Chevy Chase United Methodist Church 7001 Connecticut Avenue Chevy Chase, MD E-Love: How it Affects our Feelings, Friends & Families All are invited - UMW Brunch on July 13 Explore the world of e-communication with us, the good and the bad. Plan to stay after church on Sunday, July 13 for a light brunch served by the United Methodist Women, a short video entitled Look Up about electronic communication, and a lively discussion moderated by Pastor Kirkland and Alison Gee. The video is a lesson taught to us through a love story, in a world where we continue to find ways to make it easier for us to connect with one another, but end up often spending more time alone. Child care will be available. For more information contact Mary Kay Harper at mkh1234@aol.com or Visioning for CCUMC s Future To discern a common vision for what God wants our church to be and do in the years ahead The Church Council will not meet on July 23 as previously scheduled. Instead we will participate in a congregational meeting on Sunday, July 20, to think, talk, and pray about our vision for our church for the next 5 to 10 years. Our goal is to discern a common vision for what God wants our church to be and do in the years ahead. The meeting will begin around 11:00 am following the morning worship service and will end at 1:00 pm. Lunch will be served and child care will be available. The June 20 visioning session will be part of a discernment process that will continue through the summer and into the fall. The process will include two additional visioning sessions with prayer and reflection between them. The June 20 kick off session will be led by Pastor Kirkland and Christie LaTonia, who works for the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church on church development and renewal. 3 PAGE 3 JULY/AUGUST 2014 Pastor s Column: Come, Let Us Dream As we prepared for the current ministry and program year that started in September 2013, I asked our church council and ministry team leaders to make this the year that everything grows. In every area of the church - participation, energy, generosity, praying, saying thank you, listening, and trying new things - we have personal growth. The reason I wanted us to focus on growing everything is two-fold: I believe that with God we will always discover abundance as opposed to scarcity, and I believe our church s ministry has so much to offer to our community and world. Now while it is true that growth is a good thing for churches, it is also true that growth for growth s sake is not our purpose. As we look back on our ministry during the previous spring, winter, and fall seasons, we can point to many signs of abundance and growth. Worship and membership, ministries with children and youth, stewardship and generosity, and spiritual development and outreach have all truly grown. It s true, and we have good data and stories to back up the fact that most things in our church have grown over the past 12 months. And it s not just in things measured by numbers. I believe the vitality, enthusiasm, and community found in the church have all grown (deepened is probably the better word) as well. Thanks be to God! But as I wrote at the start of this article, growth for growth s sake isn t our purpose. A faithful church s growth must be in service to the gospel of loving God and loving others. That gospel requires us to reach new people and partner with God s work to transform lives in and outside the church. We are moving in good and faithful ways and our ministry is growing, today. Now we need to do everything we can to ensure these things are true in the years to come, because we believe in a God who says Behold, I am doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:19) and we want to be ready to respond, learn, grow, and adapt to all that God is going to be up to. This summer we are initiating a visioning process to discern our ministry priorities for the next 5 to 10 years and better understand who God calls us to reach out to and serve. I believe this visioning process is one of the most important things we will do as a church between now and Christmas. Now of course I expect that at the end of this process we will have a renewed vision, new goals to work on, and a good sense of what God wants us to do. Those are all good things. But the reason why I believe this is so important is because of the spiritual commitments required in visioning. We are members of Jesus church and without Jesus none of us would have this incredible community to belong to. To discern a faithful vision we will need to focus on this one thing: who Jesus is. Knowing our our church s vision means we will know what Jesus wants us to do with the particular gifts Jesus has given our church for ministry. Paul writes about this kind of focus in his letter to the Philippians, describing his personal ministry by saying, this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14). Paul was not exclusively future oriented and neither was he beholden to the past. Paul knew very well what it meant to serve the God who is always doing a new thing because of his own experience of being called by Jesus to a new thing. His focus was always on the God who loved and called him, trusting that God had led him this far and that God would remain faithful in what lay ahead. Like Paul, I too believe that God will remain faithful to our church. We have been in ministry for more than a century at Chevy Chase UMC, and we now find ourselves at the beginning of our second century with ministry still ahead of us and God still calling us. Discerning a vision is something that I hope will include all of us, not just a few church leaders locked away in a room for a couple of hours. I am praying for the Holy Spirit to be felt throughout our church, using each of us in the Spirit s choosing to so together we may best understand God s call today through knowing who God calls us to be as a community. 5 PAGE 5 JULY/AUGUST 2014 Caring Casseroles Caring Casseroles is a group in the church formed nine years ago by women in the Hope Circle of the UMW to provide meals for church families who are dealing with stress from something like illness, hospitalization, death, a move or a new baby. The Gee family was the first recipient of Caring Casseroles meals when Jeremy was born in Please let us know if any of you might be willing to offer up your culinary skills - or your shopping prowess - since prepared foods like a roast chicken together with some vegetable sides is perfectly acceptable. Let us know if you are willing to be on our list and able to help for even one meal on a future date convenient for you. For more information or to volunteer, contact Carolyn Greis, CAGreis@msn.com or Opportunities for Ministry and Service Christian Caregivers Family Record Book Available The Christian Caregivers of CCUMC are visiting, calling and sending cards regularly to our CCUMC members who have difficulty getting to church. The Caregivers try to make sure these members feel part of the church even though they are unable to attend. As a special project the Caregivers have designed a booklet for individuals to use in gathering important family records and information related to the legal and administrative matters of daily living. The hope is that the booklet will provide you with an easy way to condense this personal information in one place for yourself and for those that one day may need to use it on your behalf. You may pick up a copy of the booklet on the tables outside of the Chapel and the Sanctuary, and the rack outside the Wesley Room. After church on Sunday: 108 Likes on Chevy Chase UMC Facebook page Only 92 to our next milestone of 200! Pastor s Column, cont d from page 3 This is ultimately a prayerful process. Yes, there will be meetings, ed PDFs, homework to do along the way, and lots of coffee. And there will be opportunities to pray to God, to pray with each other, to share stories and listen to one another, to share hopes and dreams, and to remember that we belong to one another and share a calling as a church because we belong to Jesus. Our discernment process will involve three visioning sessions at the church and everyone is invited to participate. While it is important for church leaders to be there (and leaders are not just people who hold titles or positions, we really do want everyone to share in our visioning. Our first visioning session will take place after worship on Sunday, July 20. We will meet from 11:15am to 1pm, and lunch and child care will be provided (please RSVP for child care). At the first session we will name our gifts and ministries from recent years as well as throughout our history. We will also talk about who lives in the community around us so we may get a better understanding of our neighbors abilities as well as their needs. The next two sessions will take place in the early fall, with a workshop session on Saturday, September 13 from 9:30am to 2:30pm and a final session after worship on Sunday, October 12. I am excited about this visioning process because I am as confident in our future as I am proud of our ministry up to this point. Because when I look at our church I see a welcoming and thoughtful community that has a proven track record for ministry that is focused on Jesus and serving others. There is a song that I have discovered through the visioning that is happening throughout the United Methodist Church. It s a song called Come, Let Us Dream and it reminds me that visioning is how we renew our commitment to love God and remember that we share in the church s centuries-long efforts to serve others. The song begins with the words, Come let us dream God s dream again. Come, one and all. This is our time, again, to renew our commitments to love God and to serve others. I hope you will be a part of our new visioning process to dream God s dream again. Peace, Pastor Kirkland

PAGE 6 JULY/AUGUST 2014 Youth News We celebrated Youth Sunday on June 22 with the youth leading the service and a sermon by graduating senior Morgen Lewis. Youth Mission Trip to Dinwiddie, Va. Over 10 members of our CCUMC youth group and chaperones will be heading south to Dinwoodie, VA from July 27 to August 2 on a summer mission trip. The community of Dinwoodie dates back to the 1700s and is rich with Civil War history. Visitors may enjoy an endless list of well-developed parks and historic landmarks. When you look a little deeper In and around this peaceful, rural county, beyond the picturesque single-family homes on lush acreage, you ll find a tight-knit community that is home to many elderly and limited-income families. Often they re living on legacy properties. The name sounds nice, but these older homes have been passed down for generations, and in many cases, each generation is progressively less able to afford the upkeep on the house. Our group will give a much-needed lift to people in the community that are still working hard to take care of themselves. On this mission trip the youth will serve Jesus by assisting low income residents who are in need of home repairs or accessibility improvement. They will be working on projects that range from painting to yard trash removal (including big things like vehicles) and building wheelchair ramps - a real blessing to people in need. Paul Weller hands over a 5 lb. Hershey bar he won as a door prize at a Hershey sales meeting to representatives from the youth group. We have had twice as many members of our burgeoning youth group volunteer as we originally budgeted for and would be grateful for your support to help cover expenses. Donations designated Youth Mission Trip may be placed in the Sunday offering, made online, or by sending a check to the church office.

PAGE 7 JULY/AUGUST 2014 Feed the Homeless for August 17, 2014 From Jennifer Byrnes Missions August in Washington it seems like the entire town leaves for the beach. Congress is in recess, the White House is on vacation, and the back-to-school rush hasn t started yet. But our homeless population is still in town and needs our help. I know many of you will be out of town in August. My family and I are going to the beach also. So if you can help on August 17, we need you. Please check out the Sign-Up-Genius to bring something to Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 4 pm that Sunday. If that s not convenient you can make other arrangements with Cindy Hinchman (chinchman@chevychaseumc.org or ). If you can t help that day and want to contribute $$$, please leave a check in the church office with the notation Feed the Homeless. In May I had a chance to visit with some of those we serve. They loved the meatloaf we cooked for them in April (the Monks make a mean meatloaf) and asked that we make it again. One of the women said she really liked the fresh green salads we are now providing (thanks to Betsy Agnvall for that suggestion and the many times you ve made a special salad). It s so rewarding to know that outreach is appreciated and well received! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers! July Communion Offering: Tent of Nations Tent of Nations is located on a piece of land south west of Bethlehem in Palestine. Its mission is building bridges between people, and between people and the land. The long-term goal of The Tent of Nations is to prepare youth of various cultures to make positive contributions to their future and society through the values of understanding, tolerance, and respectful coexistence. These goals are achieved through education-awareness campaigns, youth empowerment, and work camps. As part of this mission, they sponsor educational projects at Daher s Vineyard, their organic farm, located in the hills southwest of Bethlehem, Palestine. The land is under threat of confiscation by the Israeli military, therefore they sponsor projects which aim to demonstrate solidarity with the local people, to keep the land productive and to keep the Tent of Nations projects alive. August Communion Offering: Martha s Table Beginning with humble roots in 1980, Martha s Table was originally a place for children to receive free sandwiches and food after school. It gradually grew to address the additional needs of the community by finding solutions to poverty in the short and long term. They address emergency needs with food and clothing programs and try to break the long cycle of poverty with education and family support services. Martha s Table impacts over 20,000 people a year with its programs, including the youngest learners through middle school and beyond, and their families. Their programs include delivering hot, healthy meals nightly to 3 locations around the District on McKenna's Wagon, and providing tons of emergency groceries at 3 Martha's Table markets and 8 local inner city schools. They sponsor daycare, after-school and summer programs as well as family support services such as a clothing store and family workshops. Chevy Chase UMC has been a faithful supporter of Martha s Table over the years with the Sandwich Brigade which provides sandwiches for McKenna s wagon once a month, and donations from Communion offerings and the Missions budget. We have also donated toys, art supplies and towels for swimming at day camp at various times. Anyone is invited the join the Sandwich Brigade on the third Thursday of every month at 10:00 am in the Phillips Hall kitchen. It s a great opportunity for kids to be part of a community mission during the summer.

PAGE 8 JULY/AUGUST 2014 Build Bridges Be Love Church asked to Build Bridges Be Love at 230 th Annual Conference Every spring, the Baltimore-Washington Conference of Methodist churches holds an Annual Conference. The following is a summary of the conference by one of our elected lay representatives, Linda Worthington who is also a Communications Associate for the UMConnection, the Conference newsletter. Bishop Marcus Matthews opened the 230 th annual conference of The United Methodist Church May 29 on the theme, Build Bridges Be Love. More than 1300 clergy and lay people gathered in the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott Hotel for three days of worship, music, reports, ordination and commissioning, remembering those who died the past year, Bible study, prayers, recognizing and honoring many who had served in one way or another, passing a budget and voting on 14 resolutions that had been submitted by churches, groups or individuals. Among the worshipful and inspiring events were: 19 women and men were ordained or commissioned: 9 as full members and 10 as provisional members; 8 Elders and 1 Deacon ordained; 9 Elders and 1 Deacon commissioned. Bishop Kenneth Carter from the Florida Conference preached on A Future with Hope. (Photo:right) The Africa University Choir sang throughout the conference, an offering was taken for the university during the ordination service; and Jim Salley, who leads fundraising for Africa University, led Bible studies Friday and Saturday mornings on the story of the Good Samaritan. (Photo: left) Delores Martin, the conference lay leader, called on the church to build strong bridges between laity and clergy. Bishop Matthews commissioned Richmond Williams, a Zimbabwean by birth to be a missionary, serving as a professor at Africa University. A report on the conference s Imagine No Malaria campaign, to which all churches have been asked to contribute to raise the $2.1 million goal, is well within reach. For the second year in a row, the conference unanimously approved a budget ($17.3 million) without debate nor amendment. The budget includes two significant areas of focus: new church starts and grants for new ministries. Also approved was an increase in the minimum salary for full-time clergy ($40,760) and raising the housing allowance a little. Everyone is talking about Friday evening as members did away with debate and Robert s Rules of Order and gathered in circles of grace of 10 people each for a time of holy conferencing on the five resolutions dealing with human sexuality: two asking to remove the language from the Book of Discipline that declares homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching, one that asked for West Virginia to remove it s discriminatory language against LGBT people; one for United Methodists to agree to disagree, and one to stop trials of clergy who marry same sex couples. A facilitator led discussion of all five resolutions one by one. Everyone had a chance to share his or her thoughts. At the end of the evening each resolution was voted on by paper ballots. The results were announced Saturday morning: all five passed, several by substantial margins. Whenever Jesus truly shows up in our lives, the territory of God s Kingdom becomes enlarged; our human consciousness becomes expanded; and all of our former narrow and limited ways of thinking are put to the test, said Bishop Matthews in his opening remarks. I m here to say we build bridges by loving unconditionally.

PAGE 9 JULY/AUGUST 2014 Consider Making a Securities Gift in 2014 By Grey Emmons Finance With the stock market reaching new highs almost on a daily basis, now may be the time to consider making a contribution of appreciated securities to the church. If your stocks are held in a brokerage account, they can easily be electronically transferred to the Chevy Chase UMC account. You, as the gifting party get to deduct the full market value of the securities at the time of the transfer from your income tax. You don t pay any income tax on the capital gains and the church, being a tax exempt organization, simply sells the stocks and gets the entire amount without any tax consequences. Obviously the church benefits from this generous act but you will also benefit by making a tax deductible contribution without paying a capital gains tax on any gain. If this appeals to you, contact either George Monk (gmonk@chevychaseumc.org) or myself (emmons@erols.com) who can provide you with instructions on how to transfer appreciated securities. If you are looking for another way to make a contribution to CCUMC, consider this as one possible alternative. A CCUMC Finance Update Your Finance Committee last met on June 19th. Contributions (e.g. pledged gifts, unpledged gifts, and loose plate offerings) are running approximately 10% ahead of our planned budget. Expenses are also running a little below our planned budget. This has been the case for all five months this year. Thank you for your many gifts - your prayers, your time, and your financial contributions. Your giving enables our church to fund important ministry and make a difference in our local community and throughout the world. Beginning in July, Grey Emmons is stepping down as chair of the finance committee. Grey has faithfully served as our chair for many years and has shepherded our finance and stewardship ministries through good and challenging seasons. Because of Grey s leadership we have seen an increase in financial transparency and reporting, been able to maintain essential staff and ministry funding through lean years, and continually invest in ministry that helps us deepen our love of God and love of our neighbors, and strengthen our overall financial picture. And don t worry, Grey isn t going anywhere! Grey will continue in leadership as our new chair of the trustees committee and he will continue serving on finance as a committee member (Thank you, Grey!). Our new finance chair is Ashley Iddings. The lay leadership committee looks forward to telling you more about Ashley and our new leadership team in the next edition of Highlights. Keep Highlights Green If we have your address we are sending you Highlights electronically. It saves us time, printing costs and lots of trees to send it by and you can still print out one or more pages with any article or information you would like to save. If you do not have , there is no reason for concern, you should be getting Highlights by regular ground mail as usual. If you have but would still like to receive a hard copy in the mail, please call the office to let us know at (301) If you do get it by you can always pick up a hard copy here at church, saving us the postage. Copies are in all the literature racks. Be sure to take a minute and look at the on-line version. It s lots of fun to see it in color (especially the photos). You can always find it at Giving Online to CCUMC Even Easier Want to put something in the offering but you forgot your cash? Or would you like to respond to a special appeal before you forget to do it? Now you can give to CCUMC online with any mobile device. Just scan the QR code below and you will link directly to our secure Vanco website. Once the code is stored on your phone, if you re traveling and you forgot to turn in your regular donation you can do it from your phone. It s one more way to save on paper and postage. Right now is a great time to donate to the church. It s the summer slump when people are traveling and not here to put money in the offering while we still have bills to pay.

PAGE 10 JULY/AUGUST 2014 Faith Moment By Monica Price God brings us what I like to call "opportunities to show love" everyday. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't, but the opportunities will keep coming. A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to find a parking spot for my minivan in Georgetown, (which is no small feat). We (my two small daughters and our rabbit) were running late for a vet appointment. I had just gotten one child out of her car seat, when a girl pulled up next to me, and politely asked me if I could pull forward a little bit so she could park her car too. I'm embarrassed to tell you, that I sort of snapped at her and said, "I just got my kid out of the car-sorry!" Instead of taking the 30 seconds to put her back in the car and pull forward. The girl just smiled, waved and said "no problem" and drove away. Later on that night I thought about how hard it was for me to find a parking space, and how rude I had been. I prayed for her that she would have a good week, and that God would bless her. God gives us "opportunities to show his love" all the time. Some are big, some are little, but all are valued in His eyes. God gave me an opportunity to go camping with the Youth group last year. It turned into so much more. I can't imagine spending my Sundays evenings with anyone else, (not even with my Redskins). The teens in our church are amazing. They support each other, are eager to learn about God, and discuss the latest topics. They have giving hearts, and a willingness to help others. They make me laugh and inspire me to be a better mom, wife, friend and Christian. If you have an hour or two on Sunday evenings this Fall, let me know. We would love to have you as a chaperone at our Youth Meetings or one of our events. It's an opportunity to show God's love that you won't want to miss! Church Staff Rev.
