H i ghlights Chevy Chase United Methodist Church As you may have heard, the original slate roof of the chapel was recently badly damaged by wind during summer storms resulting in several leaks. The roof has already outlived its life expectancy by nearly 30 years (it s the original roof!), so the best option has been determined to be replacing the chapel roof in its entirety. After much due diligence by the Administrative Comm. (including the Trustees) and the staff, we have selected a local contractor with significant slate experience, with an estimated total cost of approximately $90,000 (which will be reduced to approximately $80,000 after insurance). While each year s budget includes a small allocation for capital repairs and improvements, significant expenses such as this must be otherwise financed from our reserves. In good news to offset this, however, we have received commitments from two church families to match all donations, up to a total of $25,000, towards the roof project. While the roof replacement is slated (!) to get underway in late September, we will welcome gifts through the end of the year (if possible for planning and matching purposes, please consider making a pledge now of a gift you intend to give in 2019). Thanks in advance for your gift towards the preservation and improvement of our historic church home! For additional information or discussion, please contact Ashley Iddings at or ashleyiddings@gmail.com. Students are invited to bring their backpacks or other school bags to worship on Sept. 2 for our annual Blessing of the Backpacks. Each student will also receive a "blessing tag" they may place on their bags. You are invited to continue the back to school celebration after the service during a potluck lunch. Join us on Sunday, September 30 at 3pm in the Sanctuary for an organ recital presented by David Lang in honor of Linda Ellinwood, our Director of Music for many years. Watch for a sign-up sheet which will be posted outside the Wesley room if you would like to provide refreshments for the reception that will follow. The concert is being presented free of charge, so please invite your friends and neighbors. 2 Sept. 2 Scripture: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, Sermon: Heart Shaped Glasses Communion Sunday Editor, Cindy Hinchman Sept. 9 Let your life speak. Preach the gospel always and use words when necessary. The mouth of the righteous is a well of life (Proverbs 10:11). There are some ways we can think about the power of words we live by. What we say matters because, despite the adage about sticks and stones, words can hurt and words can influence for good or ill. What does faithfulness sound like to the ears of God and our neighbors? Join us as we explore how Christians may speak (and act) in love. Sermon Series Memory Verse Colossians 3:17: And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. And we believe that Jesus Christ calls us to love and serve one another without exception or exclusion. No matter your race or ethnicity, age or abilities, sexual orientation or gender identity, marital or family situa-tion, financial circumstances or faith history, we joyfully offer our hospitality and invite you to participate fully in the life of our church community. You are welcome here. We are within $300 of our fundraising goal for Project Transformation DC. Your financial gift will help us fulfill our $3,000 pledge to support a United Methodist ministry that meets the academic, physical, socialemotional and spiritual needs of children in Washington, DC. Project Transformation DC also provides meaningful ways for college-age young adults to explore ministry and develop their leadership gifts for use in and beyond the church. We have contributed to this work by providing meals for the leaders working in this project during the summer Thank you for considering making a gift to support our fundraising goal. 3 Then Jesus called the crowd to him and said to them, Listen and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. Then the disciples approached and said to Jesus, Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said? -Matthew 15:10 12 Jesus is not one to mince words. He speaks clearly and directly. When he speaks he speaks the truth, and always in love. After reading the four gospels in last year s Monday Night Bible Study several folks commented about new impressions of Jesus. Jesus comes across very differently when you look at the entire Biblical story as opposed to our usual Sunday morning experience of getting just a few verses at a time. A single picture of Jesus may lift up a single insight while an entire gospel - and especially all four gospels together - give a more complex and rounded out character. We may imagine the Jesus we meet in scripture offers a consistently calm and non-anxious presence. But it turns out that Jesus can be quite confrontational. There are several instances where Jesus reveals his activist-side, speaking truth to power and making the comfortable uncomfortable. Jesus will speak without sweetened and sugar coated speech. Sometimes he even appears to want to start something with the Pharisees! The thing about speaking truth is that it is rarely spoken into simple situations. Our lives and this world are complex matrixes of needs, wants, challenges and opportunities, with many things being in conflict with each other. While there are contextual differences between Jesus time and ours, the realities of complexity and conflict remain. This is why speaking truth can be good for some and difficult for others. And this is why bearing truth sometimes requires being confrontational and creating some needed anxiety to people who have long been numb to the concerns of others. This month in worship we are going to explore what it means to speak as a Christian. We will look to how our words should be motivated by love and willing to say what needs to be said. To speak in this way is to follow the example of God s actions toward us: always directed for our benefit and inviting us to transformed lives. After all, we believe in a God who claims us as beloved children and who also calls us in mercy to repentance. This extends to the church, where all are welcomed and all are able to become a new creation by the working of God s Spirit. I hope you will hear a loving and good word from God in these days. In response to God s good word to you, may you speak love and truth and justice to every person you can. And as you seek such words may you remember the wisdom of Saint Francis: speak the gospel always, and use words when necessary. Peace, Pastor Kirkland

Children s Sunday School takes place at 9:45 am every Sunday (after the Children s Message at the Contemporary Service). Teachers will lead the children from the Chapel to their classrooms on the first floor. Sunday School will again have a rotation format: 1st Sundays of the month: Children s Chapel (a childcentered worship experience). Children will return to regular worship in time to take Communion with their families. 2nd Sundays: Age-appropriate Sunday School classes 3rd Sundays: Kids with Purpose (children work on an age -appropriate service project) 4th Sundays: Age-appropriate Sunday School classes 5th Sundays: Age-appropriate Sunday School classes Sparks Activate Faith is a three -year curriculum with lessons that correspond to the Revised Common Lectionary. Sunday school lessons connect kids with Bible stories heard in worship. Every lesson has four parts: Gather, Open the Bible, Activate Faith, and Send. The leader guides and lesson prep videos provide all the help leaders will need, so they can spend less time preparing and more time nurturing faith in kids. We have nursery care available for children up to and including age 3 in Room 212 during worship. Your children will be lovingly cared for by our nursery attendants Rosa and Dina while you have a few quiet moments to yourself. We are excited to be kicking off this year's Kids with Purpose program on Sunday, September 16! As many of you know, children will gather together on the third Sunday of each month for age-appropriate projects to provide them with the opportunity to have meaningful and formative experiences with mission and outreach. We will be incorporating this mission element into the children's Sunday school curriculum. We are excited to be able to engage the children in activities that extend the love of Christ to the communities in which they live - church, local, regional and global. Teachers, assistants and youth chaperones are dedicated to their jobs but there are Sundays when they can t make it to church or when they need a break. Please consider putting your name on a list for volunteer substitutes. Speak either to your child s teacher or to Brad Kenn, Director of Children s and Youth Ministry at bkenn@chevychaseumc.org. Praying for another person is a privilege and a treat. In any quiet moment, you can bring that other person before God. Praying for another reminds me of the thrill of planning a surprise party or the joy of seeing the smile on the face of a stranger when you offer help that they did not ask for or did not expect. Our Sunday School program is a vibrant part of our congregation where children are welcomed, enjoyed and taught about God s special relationship with them. This year we will be following the Spark Curriculum which will match the sermons that adults will be hearing on Sunday morning. Think about the great conversations to be had on the ride home or during Sunday afternoon brunch as the children and adults share what they learned. You can make a difference in the Sunday School program by becoming a prayer partner! A prayer partner is someone who commits to praying for one of the Sunday school classes and the teachers for that particular class throughout the week. You will be the wind beneath their wings as they prepare for each Sunday and teach the children. Our Sunday School classes are divided by age group into Pre-K, K-1, 2-3,4-5 and Youth Group (6 through High School). If you have already been a prayer partner for a specific class then let us know that you want to continue praying for that class and teachers. If you want to become a prayer partner, pick one of these classes and commit to praying for the class and the teachers each week. Either way, please send your willingness to Gloria Vanderhorst at gkvanderhorst@gmail.com

Calling all rising 6th-12th graders!! If you want to know more about youth group and the fun events we have planned for this year, make sure to attend this meeting. Parents don t let your kids have all the fun. Please plan on staying for this meeting! Contact Brad Kenn. Director of Youth and Children s Ministry if you have any questions or know of someone we should invite into the group or would like regular notices about activities at or bkenn@chevychaseumc.org. The Youth Group meets most Sunday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 pm in Room 300. It is a group of caring and welcoming young people who are committed to growing in their faith, treating one another with respect, and having fun! We also participate in local service projects such as helping to prepare food for the area homeless for which they can earn Service Learning Hours. We have other special events planned throughout the year like Pie in the Face, Lock-ins, Youthsgiving and many, many, more. Rraise your hand if you ve ever wanted to scream, You re not the boss of me! (You can also raise your hand if you have, in fact, actually screamed it.) Especially when we re teenagers, we tend to push back on the people, places, and things that control and hold authority over us. But here s the catch: whether we admit it or not, we ve all given someone (or something) control of our lives. In this 4-week series, we ll challenge students to consider who, or what, they ve allowed to be their boss. Because whether it s the god of me, the god of stuff, the god of worry, or the god of obsession, we all know what it s like to have an authority problem. Seven youths and chaperones from CCUMC traveled to Harrisburg, PA in August for a rainy but productive week. Under the auspices of Youthworks, the youth spent time cleaning up the neighborhood and helping at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank among other projects.

Sing to the Lord a new song! The Sanctuary Choir is now accepting new singers for the fall! Don t know what to expect in choir? Here are our most Frequently Asked Questions. Why should I want to be in choir? Those who sing pray twice! We love to sing all kinds of music to praise God and to enrich worship for everyone who sets foot in our church. Not only do our choristers enjoy a community of wonderful people and tasty rehearsal snacks, we get to sing two concerts every year and lead the worship experience for some of the most beautiful services of the church year. Do I have to be a professional or highly experienced singer to join choir? Not at all! The only requirement for joining choir is a love of singing. No previous choral experience is necessary, and the people in our choir have a wide range of experiences that only adds to the group. Doesn t the choir only sing classical music? We sing lots of different styles of music, and nearly always in English. What if I m worried that I won t know my part well enough? Tanya records herself playing and singing EVERYONE s part on EVERY piece of music we sing and posts it online in the choir s dropbox so that you can practice at home. Each piece is between 2-5 minutes long, so practicing only takes 10 minutes at a time. Isn t choir only for stuffy, old-fashioned people? The average age of the choir is under 30 years old, so you know we re hip. When s rehearsal? Rehearsals are Thursday nights from 7 8:30 pm and Sunday mornings at 10:15, beginning Sept. 9. That s great, but I can t come every week. Does that mean I can t join? Nope! Very few of us can be there every single week. If you can be there at least half of the time and learn your part on your own when you re not there, you are welcome to sing with us. Tanya today at tlanglois@chevychaseumc.org to join the Sanctuary Choir! The CCUMC Children s Choir is for all children from 2 nd grade up. We will meet Sunday mornings from 9:00 to 9:25am in the Choir Room (Room 100) and sing on the third Sunday of every month in church. The Children s Choir will also be singing at this year s Advent Concert (Sunday, December 16 at 5 pm). Please contact Tanya to sign up your child(ren) for Children s Choir! Fall rehearsals begin Sunday, September 16. The CCUMC Cherub s Choir is for children in Pre-K 1 st grade and rehearses on Sundays from 10:30 11:00 am in the Choir Room (Room 100). Please contact Kathryn Whitfield (kathrynvwhitfield@yahoo.com) to sign up your child for Cherubs Choir. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday, October 14. David Lang is a leading professional accompanist, vocal coach, concert organist, and choral conductor. Now in his ninth season as the artistic director for The Reston Chorale, Mr. Lang also serves as director of music for Saint Dunstan's Episcopal Church in McLean and Theological College in Washington, DC. He is a conductor for Encore Creativity for Older Adults and keyboard artist for the Washington Hebrew Congregation. As long-time keyboard artist for the prestigious Master Chorale of Washington, Mr. Lang has been involved in the preparation of choruses for many venues including The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Wolf Trap.

To learn more: In these days of uncertainty for many immigrants, our very successful Citizenship classes continue. The leaders have had the good news that three of their students have recently passed their exams and been sworn in. Michael Peter (left), son of Sukie Moko and grandson of Jakay Moko arrived in the US in 1999 at age 6 with the rest of the Moko family, but without his mom who arrived four years later. Michael writes "Thanks for helping me become a citizen of the United States. I am currently attending Montgomery College and plan to transfer to a 4 year college in I am a business Marketing major and Fashion Design minor. I also work at Whole Foods to support myself and pay college expenses." (Note: The Moko family was a refugee family from Liberia sponsored by CCUMC upon their arrival in the U.S.) Priscilla Alexander (right) from South Africa writes: My swearing in ceremony was truly an amazing and wonderful experience. What a great accomplishment and honor it is to finally have a voice and now a voting right :)Here is a picture of my big day! The third student was Terry from Panama. (no photo) A new series of 10 free citizenship classes begins on Sept. 29. A unique feature of our classes is our volunteer mentors or tutors for the students. You can help to support this very important successful mission project in several ways. Tell people about the project. We will soon have postcards available in the office which you can hand out. Help us post flyers in your neighborhood, workplace or libraries. Come to the classes as a mentor and help students one-on-one with language and concepts. For more information, call Judy Smith ( ).

Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus' stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives. You are invited to explore a fresh and timely interpretation of Jesus most popular teaching parables through a Bible study based on the book Short Stories by Jesus by Amy Jill-Levine. The book takes readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them and analyzes how we might receive their wisdom and guidance today. Through a revitalized understanding, Jill-Levine interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later. This is the first in a series of short-term studies that will be offered throughout the year on Monday evenings. The Short Stories by Jesus is a six-week study and begins on Monday, Sept. 17. Contact Pastor Kirkland to get a copy of the study materials or for more information. The group is reading To Live Is Christ To Die Is Gain by Matt Chandler. For 6 weeks we will continue to focus on the book of Philippians. Paul's letter to the Philippians is one of the most taught books of the Bible because it is simple, straightforward, and broadly relevant and easy for all Christians to understand. Philippians exudes joy. This letter makes joy real, practical, and alive but there is so much more to Philippians than just joy. Come join a group of women who are seeking God's will for their lives and enjoy the teachings of the book of Philippians. We meet on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm in the Wesley Room. The study includes a 30 minute lively DVD by Matt Chandler. Come one night or all 6, just come and enjoy Christian companionship with a great group of women from different walks of life, religious backgrounds and age groups. If you have any questions, please contact Lois Hendrickson at or loishendrickson@hotmail.com. The United Methodist Women of CCUMC sends the annual count of their members to the Baltimore Washington Conference and National UMW this month. It s a great time to join and pay voluntary dues. We want you to be part of the sisterhood of more than 800,000 women worldwide who commit themselves to making a difference in the lives of women, children and youth. UMW advocates for social justice, and supports programs internationally, in our community and our church. Be a part of this and don t worry about meetings. Come when you can and participate in activities which interest you. Our next meeting is on Sat., Sept. 29 at 3:00 pm. All women and girls are welcome and childcare will be provided. The theme will be Legacies of the At this meeting we will be electing officers for Contact Judy Smith (smarmayor@aol.com) if you are interested in helping to decide where we should put our time, our talents and our money. For instance the Christmas Bazaar is coming up soon and you will want to be part of that fun. UMW membership cards are in the Wesley Room and the office and can be returned with your voluntary pledge to the church office. We want you to be part of us. PALS will kick off its year of programs and lunch on, October 1, at 11am, in the Epworth Room. At the time of this publication of Highlights, the guest speaker is being discussed by the committee that organizes this activity for seniors. You don't have to be 55+ to attend! All ages are invited and welcomed. More details about the meeting on October 1 will be announced in Sunday bulletins and on posters throughout the church during September. Please mark your calendar now for the PALS gatherings during the upcoming year. PALS meets four times between October-May, usually on the second Monday of the month. However, some changes are made occasionally in consideration of holidays. The speaker/program begins at 11am followed by a delicious lunch ($5.00 donation requested) and fellowship.

August 12 marked the first anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA. This year, on August 12, organizers were hoping to recreate this deadly white supremacist rally in Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. Also on August 12, as a prayerful response and call to action a contingent from CCUMC joined in worship and a rally on the mall sponsored by the Baltimore- Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church. United to Love: Rally for Love, Peace, and Justice. Moving is a strong theme in the Bible. Moses and the Exodus people move beyond oppression and the wilderness to find the promised land. Ruth and Naomi move from famine and insecurity to enter into a new season of family and security. Jesus calls the disciples to put down their nets and follow him. This recurring theme of moving should cause us to not be surprised when God invites us to move into something new. Faith is a journey outside ourselves, which many long time CCUMC members will recognize since that was our mission statement at one time. Sometimes God s call to move places us on a journey that leads back to familiar places. We are about to embark on such a journey. While we replace the slate roof over the chapel we will not be able to worship or hold ministry in that space. These repairs are expected to begin in September and take us into the late fall or early winter. Our worship committee, staff and music teams are preparing for an interim worship schedule that will see both our contemporary and our traditional services meeting in the sanctuary. Our worship services will still meet at 9:30am and 11am beginning Sunday, September 9. Everything you look forward to about the fall - resuming our two-service schedule, launching a new year of children s and youth ministries, and coffee fellowship between our services will continue. The only thing affected is that we will be out of the chapel until the roof work is completed. Once that work is finished then the contemporary service will move back to the chapel. A big thanks to all who contributed breakfast food for those at the Interfaith Works Women s Shelter in August! There were enough contributions for several days worth of breakfasts for the 35 women currently living at the shelter. It s during busy summer months when support to local shelters is sparse. Interfaith Works is so appreciative of CCUMC s generosity! -Virginia Tauss In September, the Library Study Group will be organizing and providing the meal for the homeless at Our Lady of Lourdes in Bethesda. If you are willing to contribute salad, dessert, or a casserole, please contact Mary Alice Gray at graybma@gmail.com. Racial Justice is one of the biggest problems our society faces today including here in the Baltimore- Washington area. The United Methodist Church asks us to examine ourselves, our society and our church in this 8 week program of videos, discussion and prayer. We will meet on Monday nights, beginning Oct. 8 at 7:00 pm. Co-facilitators are Judy Smith and Maxine Kumekpor with Brad Kenn. Participants are limited to 10 people, so sign up today in the church office, or with Judy (smarmayor@aol.com) or Maxine Kumekpor

In February 2019 there will be a special conference that will bring together representatives of United Methodists across the globe. The conference will seek to resolve differences that have arisen among United Methodists regarding the church s position that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. As we move closer to this conference, our bishops invite all UMC members, across the denomination, to pray and ask for God s guidance. Specifically, all United Methodists are invited to: 1. Engage in a weekly Wesleyan 24-hour fast from Thursday after dinner to Friday mid-afternoon. Those with health issues might consider fasting from social media, s or another daily activity. 2. Pause and pray for our church s mission and way forward daily for four minutes from 2:23 through 2:26 am or pm in their own time zone or at another time.
