Located inside the building at Calvary Lutheran Church, the Urban Arts Academy is a vibrant organization that serves over 65 students yearly in the preschool, about 100 students in our After-School programs during the school year and over 500 slots in our Summer Arts camps. The mission of Urban Arts Academy is to bring together neighborhood people from diverse cultures by providing creative experiences in the arts with children and families to develop the gifts of selfexpression and community. 3 Calvary Lutheran Crossroads - April 2017 Page 3 EASTER BREAKFAST! You are invited to enjoy a delicious breakfast before worship on Easter Sunday. A homemade hot breakfast will be served in the fellowship hall from 8:30-9:45. The menu includes egg bake (meat and veggie), fresh fruit, a wide assortment of baked goods, hot coffee and juice. This is the primary fundraiser for our youth and the summer church activities they attend. We hope you can join us and support our Calvary youth. A suggested minimum donation is $5/ person. Thank you for giving generously! CALLING ALL YOUTH! We need your help to pull off another fabulous Easter Breakfast! Please plan on meeting at church on Saturday, April 15th from 1:00-2:30 for food prep and setting up the fellowship hall. On Easter morning we will begin at 8:15, preparing to serve our first guests at 8:30. Last year, each family brought delicious baked goods to contribute to the breakfast. This was such a great way to round out the meal, we'd like you to do that again! After church, we will need all participating youth to return to the fellowship hall to help with clean up. Many hands make light work, so it shouldn't take long if everyone pitches in and helps. Invite your family and friends so we have a successful fundraiser! All who participate will get a share of the profits to use toward your church youth activities. RSVP to Laura Huff at andersonhuff@yahoo.com NEW LIFE Resurrection means new life for us in many ways. As we inch toward Easter we welcome any signs of spring in the world around us, including nature and human behavior. Resurrection is a gift from God, beyond human powers. But we can cooperate with God s actions by being aware of our part in it. We can be the ones who cherish fresh water. We take fresh water for granted in this land of 10,000 (or 15,000) lakes. How fortunate we are for the ways those glaciers formed our territory! How do we protect that water? Do we speak up about misuse of water resources? Some Calvary members have been very concerned about the fuel pipes under territories and waters to the north of the Twin Cities. We have people who are also concerned about how agriculture management affects fresh waters downstream. Are we helping to preserve this great gift which God gave us? Preserving water is an act of resurrection as we preserve the growth of plant life and the well-being of all creatures. It is an act of stewardship of God s gifts.

4 Page 4 Calvary Lutheran Crossroads - April 2017 FACILITIES TASK FORCE Calvary s facilities are both a blessing and a burden. As a blessing, the facilities are a place where much good ministry happens on a daily and weekly basis. They offer the congregation space for worship, education, fellowship, meetings, staff offices, and more. And as a blessing, the facilities also offer space for the Urban Arts Academy and BeechWood as Calvary s major tenants, as well as space for other community groups and gatherings. At the same time, the facilities are a burden because they are aging, inefficient, and poorly suited to the congregation s current needs. The high cost of operating and updating these facilities contributes to a structural operating deficit and declining congregational fund balances. A process to research options for the future of Calvary s facilities and prepare a possible recommendation for congregational action will require time and focus beyond the capacity of the Church Council. At its February retreat, the Council decided to establish a new Facilities Task Force to research and explore all possible options for the future of Calvary s facilities. This task force will consist of 5-7 Calvary members, plus the pastor. They will work on behalf of Council with the goal to prepare a final report for Council with a recommendation regarding the future of Calvary s facilities. The initial timeline for their work is from April 2017 to October Starting with a list of potential individuals to serve on the task force which Council suggested, I ll begin asking people with the goal to hold our first meeting sometime after Easter in April. While I won t be chairing the task force, I ll be meeting and working closely with them. The Call Committee will convey the work of this task force to potential pastoral candidates because the new pastor s leadership and creativity will be important to the process. - Pastor Bruce ELECTRONIC GIVING: One of the options for making contributions to Calvary Lutheran is through electronic giving. Calvary uses Vanco Services Simply Giving for this function. Application forms can be obtained from the church office at any time, or downloaded from the Calvary website, clchurch.org. To complete the simple form you will need to attach a voided check blank for the office to use in entering that information. Those enrolled in Simply Giving can make Changes at any time by notifying the church office.

Symposium on Religious and Political Disagreement Saint Olaf College is hosting a few different events on April 20 and 21 on important religious issues, including what it means to be a Christian in today's society. Speakers will address important questions on religious and political disagreement and religious freedom. Four distinguished scholars of religion will address issues of religious and political disagreement as they bear on diversity within the Christian community, differences among evangelical Christians, debates arising out of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and disagreements among the world religions (e.g., Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism) and secular perspectives in pluralistic and globalized societies.
