1 Rehobo th United Meth odist Church Doug Ben ton, Pas tor Rehoboth Reflections May, 2013 April, 2006 I ran across an article earlier this month, and it reminded me of a time in my life when I had faced extreme loneliness. It is easy to forget that our world is full of lonely people who need to know that someone cares for them and that with God in their lives they are never alone. The story is called The Power of Together, Doug The poet Rupert Brooke set out to travel by boat from England to America. Everyone on deck had someone there to see them off everyone except him. Rupert Brooke felt lonely; terribly lonely. Watching the hugging and kissing and good-byes, he wished he had someone to miss him. The poet saw a youngster and asked his name. William, the boy answered. William, he asked, would you like to earn a few shillings? Sure I would! What do I have to do? Just wave to me as I leave, the lonely man instructed. It is said that money can t buy love, but for six shillings young William waved to Rupert Brooke as the boat pulled out. The poet writes: Some people smiled and some cried; some waved white handkerchiefs; and some waved straw hats. And I? I had William, who waved at me with his red bandana for six shillings and kept me from feeling completely alone. We are all lonely at times. But here was a man who was strong enough to admit his loneliness. One psychotherapist says that a necessary first step toward coping with loneliness is for people to feel free simply admitting they are lonely. For once we recognize it then we can do something about it. What can we do? Reach out to friends and family. Too many people are lonely because they have been building walls instead of bridges. We can also find others who may be lonely and help fill their emptiness. The world is full of them - Mother Teresa used to describe loneliness as the biggest disease of our time. And the loneliest do not all reside in nursing homes, nor do they all live by themselves. Finally, we can recognize that, spiritually, we are not alone. This is a time for us to dig deep into our spiritual being. Lily Tomlin quipped, We re all in this alone. But, of course, that isn t true. And great joy comes from discovering the power in the word together. -Author Unknown Pastor s Points from Pastor Doug Sunday, May 12, 2013

4 UMW NEWS The United Methodist Women met on Monday, April 2, in the Christian Life Center. The meeting began at 6:30 with refreshments and social time with the business meeting afterwards. We had a wonderful event to raise the awareness of the Wallace Family Life Center on Sunday, April 14. The speaker was Corina Esau, director of the Wallace Center. Our unit hosted the event and invited our cluster church UMW units to attend. We had 40+ women in attendance, representing four UMW units. The units brought donations of clothing, cleaning supplies, paper goods, and fun items for children. There were so many items donated that Corina could not get them all into her SUV. A job well done, ladies! The May meeting will be a combined meeting with the UMM. We will share a meal and have a speaker. Please join us at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 6. The UMW will not meet again until September. The SC United Methodist Women Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska is scheduled for May 4-5. There is still room if you are interested. To reserve a spot at the conference send $10.00 to Pam King, 1024 Gapway Rd., Georgetown, SC For room reservations call between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. In June the unit is sponsoring Pocketbooks on Parade. The this a fun event to raise funds for the Washington Street UMW Soup Kitchen. We are asking you to donate your new and/or gently used pocketbooks. On Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. we will have our parade of pocketbooks for sale at very reasonable prices. Please contact Elaine Comstock or Vilma Cobb if you would like more information. We had lots of help to set up for the PGA. The faithful crew is growing. Billy Crawford brought Celeste Smith, and Haley O Donnell s friend Megan McDonough has become a valued regular. The old guard is still devoted to the project: Gabby Windham, Neal & Sherry Smoak, Ken Waldron, Joan Deremo, and Diana Goings. We were so efficient we had everything ready by 9 a.m. and opened the doors to a waiting crowd. We gave out 69 bags of food valued at $17.62 as priced at Wal-Mart. We had yellow squash, potatoes, green onions, baby watermelon, iceberg lettuce, coffee bags, and flavored rice. Almost everyone expressed their appreciation for the food. We had some new customers and gave them information about the Food Pantry. The crew receives so much from this ministry. Working together is a blessing and makes you realize all that God has so generously provided for us. Thank you for your prayers and support. 7
