C o ns t a n c e Connie Barnes, P a stor November, 2017 April, 2006 Greetings Rehoboth Family and Friends: Pastor s Points This time of the year, autumn/fall, is the best for me. As the weather cools and a new season dawns, my internal controls are shifting gears. I am relieved the Creator regulates my body, which allows me to relax and enjoy the ride. It is my hope that you will release your controls, enjoy this season as you intentionally shift your perspective, and begin this season with a heart of gratitude. Let us continue to be thankful for all the ways the Creator provides for us. It is my hope the following devotion will bless you and give you peace. Make a Joyful Noise by Linda Washington Back when I was searching for a church to attend regularly, a friend invited me to a service at her church. The worship leaders led the congregation in a song I particularly loved. So, I sang with gusto, remembering my college choir director s advise to Project! After the song, my friend s husband turned to me and said, You really sang loud. This remark was not intended as a compliment! After that, I self-consciously monitored my singing, making sure I sang softer than those around me and always wondering if the people around me judged my singing. But one Sunday, I noticed the singing of a woman in the pew beside me. She seemed to sing with adoration, without a trace of self-consciousness. Her worship reminded me of the enthusiastic, spontaneous worship that David demonstrated in his life. In Psalm 98, in fact, David suggest that all the earth should burst into jubilant song in worship (v. 4). Verse one of Psalm 98 tells us why we should worship joyfully, reminding us that [God] has done marvelous things. Throughout the Psalm, David recounts these marvelous things: God s faithfulness and justice to all nations, His mercy, and salvation. Dwelling on who God is and what He s done can fill our hearts with praise. What marvelous things has God done in your life? Thanksgiving is the perfect time to recall His wondrous works and give thanks. Lift your voice and sing! After reading this devotion, the following song Shout to the Lord by Darlene Zschech began to play in my head. My Jesus, my Savior, Lord, there is none like You; All of my days, I want to praise; the wonders of Your mighty love. My comfort, my shelter, Tower of refuge and strength; Let every breath, all that I am - Never cease to worship You. Shout to the Lord, all the earth, Let us sing - Power and majesty, praise to the (King); Mountains bow down and the seas will roar At the sound of Your name. I sing for joy at the wrok of Your hands, Forever I ll love You, forever I ll stand, Nothing compares to the promise I have in You. Enjoy this wonderful season of blessings from the Creator. Lift your voice and praise the Lord! 3 NEW CONSECRATION SUNDAY As we delve into this stewardship study, it is important to make sure we are all on the same page. Our emphasis over the next three weeks will cause us to look at three areas of Christian discipleship and stewardship. The first is what is our motivation to give to the church. Are we truly only concerned with paying the bills as if we are giving unto Caesar that which is Caesar s? Matthew 22:21. Or are we willing to give to God in direct response to His love and His calling us to serve Him? In Matthew 6:21 we are called to really evaluate what we treasure and that determines where our heart is. One is based on operations of the church while the other is based on ministry that proclaims God s love. The second area calls us to look at how we perceive God. Do we believe God s Word? Do we believe God will honor our stepping out to do things beyond what we can do? Are we willing to find out? Are we willing to take God out of the box we put Him in and let God be God? Are we willing to dream God size dreams? If not, why? We sing Our God is an awesome God yet we live as if He is an anemic God. What must happen for us to live life on the edge and trust Him to not let us fall? The third area is the most exciting. This is the journey we make into what John Maxwell calls God s Room. God s Room is the place where we are challenged by God to see the possibilities of what He can do with us and through us. Mr. Maxwell says that the most amazing thing about God s Room is that He gives us access to it and all the wonders of His power and grace; power in that He gives us what we need to do His work in our church and community and grace in that the love He shares with us through the struggles we encounter in fulfilling His call on our lives. When we begin our time together during the Sunday School hour, we will consider what, why, how and when we give in response to God. We will look at the differences in giving to meet the budget, making a budget to try and fit pledges, and giving a percentage of what God has given to us in response to His call on our lives. Paraphrase: You show me where you spend your time, energy, and your money and I will show you where your heart really is Remember: if you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much room. Gillian who died on September 24. She was married to the late Harold L. Gillian for 30 years and is survived by her sons Garrett Gillian, Brian (Stephanie) Gillian, Jerry Gillian, Terry (Adrienne) Gillian, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held at Rehoboth United Methodist Church with the burial at Bush River Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Rehoboth UMC Food Pantry. The RUMC family also extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Elizabeth C. Maszk who died on October 13.She is survived by her children Linda (Marty) Augustine, Cathleen Pendleton, Beverly Maszk, Jeffrey (Susan) Maszk, Heidi (Michael) Conte, ten grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, and her son, Michael Maszk. Private family services will be held.
