2 Dear Friends, As promised, I want to share with you the findings and direction of our parish mission planning team. This is in light of the current diocesan planning process. We came up with five key priorities and objectives to focus on in the coming months and years. They are: I. Continue to Grow as Disciples To ensure parish staff, leaders, ministers and catechists grow in their role as disciples. A. Establish a baseline of understanding B. Develop a plan of growth C. Promote prayer, scripture and reflection at all meetings/gatherings D. Establish a discipleship core team II. Continue to Grow Disciples To build among parishioners an understanding of discipleship and our baptismal call to bring the Gospel to others. A. Provide and promote discipleship formation opportunities for all ages B. Promote volunteerism as a ministry in the life of the Church C. Create a meaningful ministry covenant fair D. Promote opportunities for Gospel justice III. Welcomed, Valued and Enriched in Christ To create a vibrant weekend worship experience that satisfies the needs and desires of parishioners. A. Develop a plan for welcoming new parishioners B. Take steps to engage families, especially those preparing for sacraments C. Assess and assure the needs of the elderly are being met IV. Understanding and engaging year old population To increase participation of young adults in parish life. A. Analyze parish/community data to identify population and segmentation opportunities B. Engage segmentation groups via one-on-one interviews and focus groups C. Establish a core team for planning/connecting with diocesan efforts D. Leverage insights and develop an engagement plan V. Active partnership with schools Increase collaboration and communication between parish and schools (Holy Family and Notre Dame). A. Identify viable opportunities for parish presence at school events B. Utilize Holy Family School brown envelopes for communication with school families C. Lobby the Grace System to ensure equal representation on the Holy Family School Advisory Council D. Continue to collaborate on providing retreats to schools E. Ensure school families are present at parish Sunday Mass We have much energy and enthusiasm around these priorities. If one of them strikes you as an area you would like to become involved in, please let us know. We also ask for your prayers as we begin this pursuit. Blessings, Sr. Marla Clercx, Pastoral Leader Online registration for our new community picture directory is open. We are partnering with Lifetouch for professional photography. 4 August 2018 IN THE Deaf community holds gathering, learns about playing on God s team SAM LUCERO THE COMPASS GREEN BAY Faith and football were the focus of a daylong event July 7 for the Diocese of Green Bay s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. The day began at Lambeau Field, where 40 people from fi ve states participated in a tour of the Green Bay Packers facility. Following the tour and lunch in a Lambeau Field luxury box, the group traveled to St. John the Evangelist Church, home of the diocese s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministry, where Fr. Christopher Klusman, a Deaf priest from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, led a presentation on the theme, Playing On God s Team. Fr. Klusman, one of 11 deaf priests in the United States, visits Green Bay twice a year, during Advent and Lent, to offer the sacrament of reconciliation to members of the diocese s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. During his workshop, held in Mazzuchelli Hall, Fr. Klusman told the group about legendary Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, SAM LUCERO THE COMPASS Catholics from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community participated in a daylong event that began with a tour of Lambeau Field on July 7. The event, organized by the Diocese of Green Bay s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministry Resources, was attended by 40 people from five states. and his strong devotion to his Catholic faith. He said that Coach Lombardi attended daily Mass at nearby St. Willebrord Church. Fr. Klusman also described the winning ingredients of a football team. He then explained that Catholics are also on a team, God s team. They have their team colors, as seen at Mass during the different liturgical seasons and feast days. Like winning football teams, Catholics must practice their faith in order to be successful. This includes participating in the sacraments, he said. Catholics have to practice, practice, practice, he said, using American Sign Language. Our full story appears in the July 13 issue. FRANKLY, FRANCIS Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today, this audience is taking place as it did last Wednesday: there are many sick people in the Paul VI Hall. To protect them from the heat, and to make them more comfortable, they are there. But they will follow the audience on the jumbo screen, and so we are together, that is, there are not two audiences. There is only one. Let us greet the sick people in the Paul VI Hall. And let us continue speaking about the Commandments which, as we have said, more than commandments, are the words of God to his people to help them journey properly, obeying the Father s loving words. The Ten Words begin in this way: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage (Ex 20:2). This beginning would seem foreign to the true and proper laws that follow. But it is not so. + Pope Francis, June 27, Follow Him On Appleton Catholic fi nds way to put his athletic skills into action BY JEFF KUROWSKI THE COMPASS APPLETON Nick Vande Hey received an invite for a retreat in early July, but he was hesitant to accept. Something was on my heart that this may not be the right thing, he said. The right thing was about to come along. Vande Hey, who will be a junior in the fall at St. Norbert College in De Pere, was planning to compete in a triathlon, but he needed a bicycle. I was looking for a bike, he said. I prayed about it for probably three months. Kevin Biese called and said, I know that you ve heard that I do Biking for Babies. What are the odds that you would be interested? Biese, a Kaukauna native who currently lives in Madison, has been active in Biking for Babies charity rides since The mission of Biking for Babies is to raise awareness in the fi ght against abortion and fi nancial support for pregnancy resource centers. Biese offered Vande Hey his bicycle and asked him to consider the northern ride, which will begin in Green Bay on July 9 and end at the Celebration of Life on July 14 in St. Louis. Our full story appears in the June 29 issue.

5 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW About Monica and Augustine PATRICIA KASTEN THE COMPASS The feasts of Monica and Augustine of Hippo are Aug. 27 and They are mother and son saints. 2 Monica was born in North Africa, to Christian parents. She married a pagan man who had a bad temper. Monica prayed for his conversion and he was baptized not long before his death. 3 4 Monica had three children: Augustine, Navigius and Perpetua. Augustine lived a wild life, even fathering an illegitimate son. Monica prayed constantly for him. Augustine fi nally converted and was baptized in Milan by St. Ambrose. Monica died not long after, in Ostia, near Rome. 5 Augustine was later ordained and became bishop of Hippo in North Africa, near modern Algeria of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, which is in union with Rome. Please mail $23 payment to: What is a missionary disciple? Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has encouraged the church to go out to the world. In The Joy of the Gospel, he spoke of his dream of a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything. In 2016, inspired by this call and led by the Holy Spirit, I announced a new vision for the Diocese of Green Bay that embraces this dream: We are missionary disciples striving to lead all people to the Kingdom of God. Since that time, my staff and I have worked to help BISHOP S CORNER Bishop David Ricken folks in the diocese understand and live this vision. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens, we use certain terms so often amongst ourselves that we assume everyone understands them. The term missionary disciples is one example. Though used often, and incorporated into our vision, it can sometimes seem like insider jargon, rather than a vision that all people can embrace. So what exactly is a missionary disciple? I could offer a theological response to this question, but I think that would simply add to people s confusion. Instead I want to explain this in simple terms that will allow people to live this out in concrete ways. To do this, let s break down the term into its component parts. First, what is a disciple? A disciple is a friend and follower of Jesus, who follows Jesus, worships Jesus, and shares Jesus with others. Very simply, a disciple is a student, someone who follows another person and learns from them. As Christians, we are students of Jesus Christ. However, being a disciple of Christ also means becoming a close friend with Jesus. Think of the disciples that we read about in the Gospels. Those men and women were not just students who came and went after receiving their lesson for the day. They were men and women who gave up other things to follow Christ. Being a disciple means we have to take time to get to know Jesus. This is true of all our friendships. In order for them to thrive, we must make ourselves available to spend time with the other person. We can do this by reading stories about Jesus in the Gospels, speaking and listening to Jesus through prayer, and receiving Jesus in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. Being a disciple also means making Jesus a priority in our lives, even giving up things that get in the way of our relationship with him. This can be diffi cult, no doubt, but throughout the Gospels, Jesus promises he will walk patiently with us. What about the word missionary? Many hear that term and immediately think of people like St. Mother Teresa or St. Francis Xavier, who devoted their lives to serving in foreign lands. They were certainly great examples of missionary disciples. However, we do not need to go overseas to be missionaries. The full column appears in the July 13 issue. Subscribe: Save $ 5 NOW! P.O.
