5 June 2018 IN THE Holy Trinity Parish in Oconto breaks ground for new church FRANKLY, FRANCIS Dear Brothers and Sisters, SAM LUCERO THE COMPASS OCONTO Supplied with shovels and hardhats, Bishop David Ricken, Fr. Joel Sember and key community leaders led a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Holy Trinity Church on Friday, May 11. Located on the current church property, construction of the new church begins this month. General contractor, The Boldt Company, is directing the construction project. Completion is anticipated in time for Christmas. Holy Trinity, formerly St. Joseph Church, traces its roots to 1870, when approximately 100 families of German and Irish descent decided to build a new church in Oconto. The existing parish, St. Peter, was established in the 1840s by French Canadians. In 1996, St. Joseph and St. Peter parishes merged to form Holy Trinity Parish. The new church will feature some of the stained glass and statues from both former buildings, according to the parish. The present church SAM LUCERO THE COMPASS Bishop David Ricken blesses land adjacent to Holy Trinity Church in Oconto, where a new church is being built this summer. Holy Trinity Church, formerly St. Joseph Church, was built in will remain in use while the new church is under construction and will then be disassembled. According to Fr. Sember, the decision to build a new church followed a review of the current church building. It was a matter of asking ourselves, how can we ensure a Catholic presence in the City of Oconto for the next 100 years and beyond, the told The Compass. In 2011, we commissioned studies of the old church and there are lots of issues like insulation and wiring to foundation issues and structural issues. So we came to a conclusion that you could spend a lot of money on the old church just to keep it from falling down, but it wouldn t address other issues such as accessibility and being welcoming, added Fr. Sember. Our full story appears in the May 18 issue. Motherhouse Road Trip lands in Green Bay In this, our fi nal catechesis on baptism, we turn to the rites illustrating the grace of the sacrament. Following an ancient tradition, the newly baptized are robed in a white garment signifying their new life in Christ, and are admonished to preserve it unstained for eternal life. Since, as St. Paul says, the baptized have been clothed in Christ (cf. Gal 3:27), they are called to cultivate every virtue, especially charity, which binds the others together (cf. Col 3:14). So too, the taper lighted from the paschal candle symbolizes the light of Christ and the warmth of his love, which, with the help of the parents and godparents, must be nurtured through education in the Christian life. These rites evoke not only our communion in the church on earth but also point to its fulfi lment in the heavenly Jerusalem, where God will be our light for ever (cf. Rev 22:5). + Pope Francis, May 16, Follow Him On BY SAM LUCERO THE COMPASS GREEN BAY When Srs. Maxine Kollasch and Julie Vieira professed their fi nal vows as Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 2006, they wanted to share the joy of their religious vocation with others. The two sisters started an online ministry aimed at reaching young people, especially young women. Today, the ministry is known as A Nun s Life Ministry and its outreach now extends across borders and oceans as well as internet platforms. One of their outreach projects is a field trip, where Sr. Maxine and current Nun s Life program director, Franciscan Sr. Julie Myers, visit motherhouses around the United States and Canada and host live podcasts called Ask Sister. On May 9 and 10, the sisters were in Green Bay to host their Ask Sister podcast at St. Francis Convent, motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross. It was the 35th fi eld trip, which they call the Motherhouse Road Trip. During the one-hour podcast on May 9, Sr. Maxine interviewed two members of the community: Sr. Laura Zelten and Sr. Mary Kabat. Our full story appears in the May 18 issue.

Barnabas introduced St. Paul to the Apostles after Paul s conversion. (Acts 9:27) 2 Barnabas was born a Jew on the island of Cyprus. His name was originally Joseph and he was a Levite (the priesthood caste). 3 His name means son of comfort in Hebrew. It can also mean son of exhortation and some sources believe this may have been given him to show that he was a good preacher. 4 5 He travelled with Paul to Antioch and Asia Minor. Along with Paul, Barnabas is called an Apostle and is honored as a martyr. 5 Barnabas was related to John Mark, (the evangelist, Mark). They went together to Cyprus when Paul travelled with Silas. This is the birthday of the church, when our risen and ascended Lord Jesus Christ sent the Holy Spirit upon his bewildered, fearful and mourning disciples who were trying to fi nd their path through the great loss of Jesus. They were also grappling with the fact that for 40 days he was appearing to them, having risen from the dead. He was sharing meals with them, even cooking for them along the shores of the Sea of Galilee. A ghost does not BISHOP S cook food and eat it; a mere CORNER spirit cannot ask one of his Bishop David doubting followers to put his Ricken fi ngers into his wounds and come to believe in his resurrection. Today, with the worldwide bewilderment and confusion surrounding the most fundamental questions about life, truth and love, the body, gender, and marriage and family life, we need to call on the assistance of the Holy Spirit. Along with that, we need a new Pentecost, a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our church and throughout the world. In northeast Wisconsin, our diocesan-wide journey, Disciples on the Way, is preparing us to be more open to a fresh outpouring of the Come, Holy Spirit Parish SNAPSHOT Holy Spirit. In the next months, our parishes will be engaging in the Alpha Program, along with powerful Discipleship Seminars that will be offered within each region of the diocese. Both of these initiatives, over time, will provide a powerful opportunity for all to develop and grow their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus is alive, today, within you, and all around you! He loves you and wants to be in a relationship of friendship-love with each and every one of you! To prepare us even more for this, I am asking every parish to begin praying the Jubilee Year prayer to the Holy Spirit at the conclusion of each Mass. This prayer came to me as a gift from a deep conversation with the Carmelite nuns in Denmark, Wis. They pressed me to write it so that this renewal will be truly guided by the Holy Spirit. Thank you, Mother Christine Marie, and the dear nuns of the Carmelite Monastery of the Holy Name of Jesus! The nuns of Carmel pray every day for our priests, and for all of you and your families; what a blessing it is to have them praying for all of us every day! Above is the diocesan prayer. Please pray it every Sunday with your parish priest and pray it often at home for the rest of this Jubilee Year 2018, celebrating 150 years of service. Great things will happen for you! Parish Mission Planning you ask, what s this? Parish Mission Planning aligns and mobilizes parish and school ministry planning efforts with our diocesan vision, mission, cultural values, and goals. We are wrapping our current vision/mission statement with Bishop Ricken s vision/mission, using the key areas of and as outlined in *Disciples on the Way. Parish Mission Planning focuses planning efforts on how our parish can engage in evangelization and discipleship collaboratively with Catholic schools and agencies residing in our community, our parish mission field. Vision We are missionary disciples striving to lead all people to the Kingdom of God. Mission As friends and followers of Jesus, we are devoted to fostering households and communities of discipleship through the mission and ministry of the Catholic Church. Our Parish Mission Planning team includes our pastoral leader, a team facilitator, parish and school leaders, lay ministers and parishioners representing various demographic groups, with assistance from our Diocesan Curia Offices.
