2 Message from the Grand Knight Brothers, As we end our fraternal year, I would like to THANK the council for a very good year. We accomplished many things throughout the past fraternal year. We could not have done this without the work of strong officers, hard working chairman, and dedicated Brother Knights, wives and their families. If you have not checked out our new look on the web, please go to monthly newsletters are posted and the yearly calendar is also available. Please check it regularly as their will be updates, not only of the calendar but photos and reports of the council activities. Thank you to Brother Roy Mercer for maintaining our website.he is working very hard to keep our presence on the internet moving forward. While you are surfing around our site, check our monthly colored version newsletter out that Brother Brad Hines has designed, I must warn you to wear your sunglasses, it really is quite colorful. We will have the election of officers at our May meeting. The installation of these officers will take place on July 7:00; our District Deputy, will install the officers. This meeting/installation is open to Brother Knights and their families. A catered meal will be served and I hope to have a good turnout. Please come enjoy the meal and stay to experience the uplifting ceremony of the installation.. While the busiest season of fund raising is over, please continue to support the council. For our rest and relaxation time, Brother Kenny Kocich is planning an intriguing night for our annual Ladies Night coming up June 8th.Please encourage your wives or significant other to come out and join in the fun. The council fishing tournament is scheduled in September for the guys. More details to come later I would like to encourage everyone to attend these events, but only if you intend to come out and have a little fun. Check out these events on the website for further details. The State convention was held April in Houston. We had two delegates and two alternates that attended. There will be a report at the May 22nd meeting with the information we received from this event. May 28th is Memorial Day, please remember all the Soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for this country so that we could be free and continue to live with the freedoms we have today. I would like to see everyone at our next meeting on May 22, 2012 where we will have our election of officers for the next fraternal year which are posted at the end of this letter. As always we will start with a tasty meal and there will be some fantastic door prizes, so come and be a winner. Hope to see you there. Brother Donald Kruppa finished in first place in all events at the annual KC bowling tournament. Next time you see Donald give him a hand shake and congratulate him on his effort. Amazing Video This is an amazing video on human life from conception to birth using the newest MRI scanning technology that won its two inventors' the Nobel Peace Prize. TABC Seller/Server Training Certification If you plan on serving beer or wine for the KC's, please consider taking the State of Texas Certification Course. We especially encourage those who will be working the Crawfish Boil to take the course. It is online and takes only a short time to complete. You can print your certification upon successful completion of the course. You will need a credit card to start but the KC's will reimburse you with a receipt and a copy of the certificate which we file. Prizes will be awarded for Top Fish and Top Stringers each day, to assure that fisherman who fish both days will not have an advantage over those who can only fish one of the days. 4 How long have you been a Catholic? I know silly question, right. Most, not all of us, grew up in the Catholic Church and are familiar with its traditions and order of things. What do we know about the priesthood? Most Catholics, when asked, don t know a lot about the men and women that help us on our journey of faith, only that they are wonderful people with an ability to help us become closer to God and guide us on our spiritual journey as a Catholic. Our parish at Holy Rosary was blessed these last few months with the having a seminarian and in particular with Oscar Dubon through his pastoral year. He has touched many in our parish and the surrounding community. Leading by example and always having the warm smile and handshake to greet and enlighten the spirit of each person he encounters. I had the great honor of spending a short evening with him to share some basic information not only about Oscar but on the experience he has had on his journey to priesthood. This has been a very difficult article to put together. This was due to my desire to ensure that I was honoring not only Oscar but all the seminarians that have chosen a path of spiritual service. Oscar grew up in Honduras, attended school and eventually found himself a key employee for a company where his value became great. Changes in the company and unrest within him found him looking for work and direction. Eventually he found himself working for Celebrity Cruise Lines working his way up the ranks. With the decline in the travel industry he found once again looking to be called back to work with Celebrity. Eventually finding himself in Houston where an uncle lived. He attended church regularly and had a wonderful girlfriend. However, he still did not feel complete. From an early age he had always felt the call to serve and this was the time when he decided to move forward with that call. All the continued instances where Oscar made statements to the Lord that if it was his will then allow his decisions to succeed or fail had brought him to this point. Father Cantu at Holy Name had played a major role in supporting Oscar s curiosities and encouraged him to explore it further. He attended a retreat and there found the desire to explore his calling further. So began the process of entering into the Seminary. The process began with interviews, questions of why he wanted to become a priest and more probing questions into his personal views, desires and ambitions. This was followed by a very large amount of paper work. Forms that needed to be filled out, records collected, both church and personal records, and also letters. Letters were to be provided from friends, family and his boss. He stated that this was concerning because he was not sure how everyone would take the fact that he was entering into the Seminary. Then came the physical and physiological exams. Oscar The process began with interviews, questions of why he wanted to become a priest and more probing questions into his personal views, desires and ambitions. Then came the physical and physiological exams. Oscar stated that this was a process but one that had not really concerned him or made him question his desire to enter the Seminary. However, through this process a priest that was to be coaching and encouraging him had began to do the opposite, discouraging him and placed doubt in what is was choosing to do. This was quickly overcome through his own persistence as well as others encouraging him. The final step in the process was the Mission Committee. This committee was made up of faculty and advisors for the Seminary and would ultimately decide if he was to be admitted to the Seminary. The Mission Committee gathers in a meeting room and begins the process of interviewing and reviewing the candidate. Upon completing the interview a determination is made and the Candidate is accepted into the Seminary. Upon this acceptance Oscar was given the opportunity to go home and begin the process of informing his family and getting all the visas he required to study in the United States and Mexico. Of everything that was to be done when he went home, he feared informing his father, not knowing how he would respond to the vocation he had chosen to pursue. After spending time at home and getting all of his documentation in order it was time to begin. Oscar did not attend Saint Mary s initially. He was sent to the Seminary in Mexico City to begin his studies. At first he did not like the City, culture and his fellow Seminarians, and was ready to quit and find an alternative path. Oscar found through time and opening up to the unusual culture that he began to fit in and find his way. Though he never got use to the spicy food that the Mexican culture loves so dearly and to this day steers far from hot and spicy foods and drinks. The friendships that were made in the time in Mexico ran deep and he still maintains the friends he made from the various countries surrounding Latin America.

5 Upon returning to the United States Oscar was required to go through eleven months of English language studies. This is where he shared some funny experiences. We all know how words can be similar yet have very different meanings. During a reading in class one of the Seminarians mis-took the word chaos for cows. This may seem innocent enough however, Oscar stated that when it was placed in the context of the reading that the entire class was laughing out loud. Even though he has a great mastery of the English language he still works on his language skill each and every day. This last year was his pastoral year and we were lucky enough to have him with us at Holy Rosary in Rosenberg. Oscar stated how grateful he is that Father Bill accepted him to be at Holy Rosary stating that it is not just accepting an individual to teach and mentor, but also involved living with that individual. This may not seem a major thing to many of us, however, Father Bill had been living on his own for a number and years and introducing someone else into the house was a learning process for everyone. Oscar stated that it has been a wonderful experience and he stated how much of an impact being at Holy Rosary has made on him. Experiencing the community, culture, and learning the day-to-day life of a diocese priest. What he has not realized is how much he has impacted the Holy Rosary church, and the Knights of Council Oscar still has a ways to go to complete his Journey. He begins his 3 rd Year of Theology and will then take the first holy order of a Transitional Decon where he will begin to visit different churches and present Homilies, twice a month, while finishing his last year. If all goes as planned Oscar will be an Ordained priest in June of We all will continue to pray for Oscar and support him in his continued journey. I also found out many interesting things about Oscar while spending the evening with him. He loves Photography, riding his bike, cooking (non-spicy food), and gardening. I had asked what he felt was a misconception that most people have about Seminary life, Oscar grinned and stated that they are all just people like you and I. They do not get along with each other all the time and they don t spend all their time praying. Also on a more serious note Oscar explained that he felt most individuals think the Seminary is where you go when you know you want to become a priest and this is not true. The Seminary helps individuals determine where their vocation may lie. I want to thank Oscar for spending the time with me so that I could gather the information I am sharing. Also ask him to forgive me if I don t have all my facts 100% correct. When we met we shared dinner and it was hard to remember to take good notes when you have so much fun just visiting. He also needs to know, that he has been a great example to all of us at Holy Rosary and the Knights of Council 2801 by always leading by example, encouraging our fellowship, and always being someone that simply by his presence makes one s day brighter.

9 KC CLUB Hall and Park Report For those of you that are not aware, The Columbus Club is a separate Corporation from Council The Columbus Club is established as a holding company for property. The Club is charged with the operations of the hall and pavilion, including maintenance and leasing etc. The Club is operated by 4 executive officers, ( handles the daily operations) elected by the membership and an ex officio board of directors, Council Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight and 3 trustees. After many years of excellent service from Brother David Svatek, has relinquished duties of hall and lease manager due to medical issues. Thanks to David for many years of leadership and dedicated service. Brother Wayne Jakubik has taken over responsibilities of Hall Manager and has been doing a great job. Past GK Mike Stavinoha has taken over responsibilities of Lease Manager and reports that there has been considerable demand for rental reservations for the next several months. Thanks to Mike Stavinoha and Roy Mercer for establishing online computer service for public access to our website. Their efforts have streamlined access to hall information and reservations. Roy and Hall Mgr. Wayne are very close to having onsite premises cameras installed, which will allow site inspection of our grounds at any time of the day or night, via computer video. Is this high tech or what? Thanks to Brother Clarence Klezel for his daily efforts in maintaining the Hall and Park facilities. What a great service Brother Clarence provides to the membership. The Clubs financial condition is very good. Costs of remodeling to the hall and park over the past couple of years should be paid for this year. Have you ever considered where most of the Clubs building operational funds are generated? How about Bingo! Bingo is, hands down, the best rental customer of the Club. Bingo is the primary source of rental income to the Club. Without rental of our hall for Bingo activity, it would be extremely difficult to delvelope enough funds for proper maintenance of our building and grounds. Support Bingo and offer to volunteer your services by calling Chairman Andy Sulak. The Club officers are working to better organize and document job responsibilities for paid volunteers, establish rental policies and revamp rental contracts. Hopefully over the next year will have completed the Hall Operational Manual. There have been considerable changes within the hall and park appearance over the past few years, not possible without the total cooperation and efforts of the brothers.
