On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling such needs by allowing people to instantly connect. Rather than enhancing wellbeing, as frequent interactions with supportive offline social networks powerfully do, our current findings demonstrate that interacting with Facebook may predict the opposite result for young adults it may undermine it. There is growing evidence of a dangerous phenomenon called Facebook Depression. It s the result of the endless comparisons that lead to envy, the friends who are not people you can truly count on, the cyber-bullying that leads to fear or worse, the vicious gossiping, the over-sharing of personal information that can be used against you, and the keeping-up with all those pictures and stories that others post. It s exhausting and unfulfilling. So how to avoid this growing problem? Get out more with friends and family and use Facebook (and other social media) less! It s that simple and important! While social media is a wonderful tool, its overuse is actually dangerous to your mental health, and the mental health of your children and grandchildren. Last Sunday we held our Retreat Team Opening Dinner. Under the direction of our Youth Ministers, Mr. David Annese and Ms. Gianna Procaccini, we welcomed 36 juniors and seniors who have volunteered to lead our Confirmation Retreat Program. For over 30 years, our high school young adults have led a weekend retreat for our Confirmation Candidates. It s an extraordinary amount of time and effort to plan the weekend and carry it out, but our youth joyfully make this sacrifice!! I m so inspired by their dedication to our Retreat Program which is a blessing to us and to them and I thank them for keeping this awesome tradition alive at IC! RCIA classes began last week but it s not too late to join. If you are an adult newcomer to the Catholic Faith or an adult Catholic who wishes to continue their study of the Faith in order to receive First Eucharist and/or Confirmation, please contact the Parish Office and we ll forward your contact information to our RCIA coordinators John & Rita Peiczarek. Finally, like you, I m watching with trepidation as Hurricane Florence barrels towards the Carolinas. As I write, I don t know how bad it will be when it strikes land, but I m praying very much for everyone in its path. Please God the damage will be minimal. God bless you in the week ahead. Fr.
