1 ALDERSGATE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH JULY 2018 Experience The team will be worshiping with the Bolivian Methodists at Cristo Ombero, as well as visiting outpatients with the Red Cross and a girls and boys orphanage, organizing and leading a Vacation Bible School for the Guarani children, and helping build a 2-room house in the Guarani village. They also will be sending prescription and reader glasses. Holly Hogarth and Regina Whitaker will be joining the Fuquay Varina United Methodist 2018 Bolivian Mission Team to Montero, Bolivia from July 13-20, The mission team leader, Faith Stephenson s grandfather began work in Montero, Bolivia 23 years ago. The team will be landing in Santa Cruz, staying in Montero, and working in a Guarani village. The natives grow sugar cane and other crops that provide some income. The villages are about 45-minute drive from the city of Montero. In prior years, FVUMC built houses in 2 villages. The houses are usually 2 rooms, divided the way the family requests. The village leaders decide who needs the homes the most. The new homes replace the traditional mud and thatch huts that are health and safety problems due to bug infestations that cause disease, fire, and flooding. The new houses are elevated to prevent flooding and are built from brick and clay blocks with tin roofs. FVUMC donated $4500 to cover the cost of the construction materials. One of the major languages of South America, spoken by nearly 5 million people in Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina is Tupi-Guarani. In fact, more than two-thirds of the population of Paraguay are speakers of Guarani, most of whom are fully bilingual in Guarani and Spanish. There are significant differences between Paraguayan Guarani and the Guarani dialects spoken in other regions, and some linguists consider them separate languages. Please be in prayer for Holly, Regina, and the 2018 Bolivia Mission Team. Girl s Orphanage VBS Brick Work

CANNED FOOD NEEDS FOR JULY: Canned pasta, fruit, and canned meat. EMPTY PLASTIC LAUNDRY DETERGENT BOTTLES. There is a need for laundry detergent, and we have a recipe that will make it for just pennies on the dollar. Look for more information about Summer Music in the weekly E*Blast! DRAMA MINISTRY IS SCOUTING FOR TALENT! Some say that worship is a rehearsal for life, and that we are the actors and God is the audience. Our faith is built on the story of God and God s people, which means there are definitely ways that we can learn and worship through drama. If you d like to get involved in our plans to provide some drama for worship, please contact Emily Wike (ewemilycatherine21@gmail.com).

4 PAGE 4 Live Gratefully, Give Generously The focus for this year s stewardship campaign is Live Gratefully, Give Generously. Dave Baranowski, Director of Stewardship Education for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, wrote the column below, titled Stewardship Strengthens Our Faith on this very topic. Please take a moment to read it and think about what it says. For some people, "stewardship" is the term the Church uses when she tries to get money isn't "stewardship" the Catholic code word for fundraising sprinkled with holy water? Unfortunately, the word has been misused and misunderstood for so long, many people tune out when they hear the word. Stewardship, quite simply, is recognizing that everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God and being grateful and generous with those gifts. We aren't "owners" of anything; we are merely "stewards" of the gifts that God has given each of us. All He's asking is that we return a portion, in gratitude, for all that He has given us. The whole point of stewardship is to strengthen our faith, strengthen our relationship with the Holy Trinity, and help each other get to heaven. If you remember nothing else about stewardship, just keep these words in mind grateful and generous. For people whose lives are based in gratitude, generosity is the natural by-product. When someone is grateful, they typically want to share, they are generous with others. This becomes a cycle, as a person is grateful, they become generous. The person receiving the generosity becomes grateful and is generous to the next person and so on. So, how does one live a life of gratitude? Let's go back to the definition of stewardship. We have to first recognize that everything we have and are is a gift from God. Unfortunately, this is where we lose some people. They don't recognize that the talents, skills and abilities that God gave them are gifts. They don't recognize that the money and possessions they earned from the talents, skills and abilities that God gave them are gifts. They don't recognize that the people God has put in their lives are gifts. Instead, some people think that they do this all on their own, without God's help. When we recognize the gifts we have been given, we live a more "God-centered" life. When we don't, we live a more "self-centered" life. Remember what it says in the Gospel of John, "He must increase; I must decrease."

5 PAGE 5 Dear Friends, When people ask me what difference a donation can make, I reply by saying a donation to Meals on Wheels of Durham changes lives. To our clients, the service that we provide is often more than just food. We bring comfort, dignity, and the knowledge someone cares. Many of our clients are alone. The daily visit by a Meals on Wheels volunteer is just as important as the food they bring. For many clients, our volunteer s delivery may be their only contact with another individual in a day. For their families, the knowledge that a volunteer checks in on a regular basis is reassurance that their family member is okay. Behind every one of our clients there are compassionate people like you, dedicated to helping support their choice of independence. YOUR DONATION OF $ ON MAY 9TH, 2018, WILL HELP MEALS ON WHEELS OF DURHAM PROVIDE A NUTRITIOUS MEAL TO THOSE IN NEED OF OUR SERVICES. Thank you for helping us serve the next meal. Sincerely, Gale Singer Adland, Executive Director Aldersgate raised $3, for the 2018 Crop Walk!

6 KNOWING (KNOW MORE ABOUT GOD, EACH OTHER, AND THE NEEDS OF THE WORLD) PAGE 6 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2018 What an amazing week we had at Rolling River Rampage VBS! From June 24-28, Aldersgate UMC was transformed into a raging river ready to host a large group of young river rafters. Overall we had 83 kids registered this year! Each day, we gathered in the sanctuary for our opening assembly time. Our Paddle Captain and Romper the River Otter helped us learn our rapid reminders and rafting ready verse, When you pass through the waters, I will be with you (Isaiah 43:2). We even had appearances from meteorologist Max Breezy (Cathy Chappell) and wilderness survivalist Jean-Michel McDiver (Pastor Eric), but Safety Sam (Kaylee Eckhoff) kept these 2 crazy characters in check as she guided us down the river. In the end, we all found adventure, acceptance, joy, rest, and peace on the river through Jesus Christ. After our opening assembly, our young rafters traveled around to different stations including science, crafts, music, and Bible story. At the end, we gathered again for more songs, dancing, and a concluding summary and prayer from Paddle Captain Cathy. During our VBS, we also collected supplies for hygiene kits to donate to the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Flooded rivers and other disasters can cause a huge amount of devastation, we know, so we learned about ways that we can help provide in times of hurt and need. What a beautiful and special time learning more about Jesus with our precious children!

A big thank you is in order for all of our VBS volunteers! The entire week before VBS, our decoration team was hard at work, under the leadership of Lisa Clark. We even had friends from Asbury UMC in Durham helping us too because we are sharing decorations for their VBS in July. Then every night during VBS, we had a meal provided by different groups in the church, including the Jamaica Mission Team, Susanna Wesley Circle, Weekday School Board, Agape Circle, and the United Methodist Men. Without these groups, we could not have hosted so many families. Thank you! We also had volunteers all week leading our different age groups and organizing activities in stations. Some staffed the registration table and others provided transportation to kids from Oxford Manor. Thank you! Most of all, a special thank you goes to Holly Fishback, our VBS director this year. She did an amazing job of keeping us all organized and motivated. If you see Holly, be sure to tell her how amazing VBS was because of her. Thank you all! All Volunteers VBS Volunteers June 24-28

10 PAGE 10 PROJECT AGAPE CHRISTMAS BOXES - Project AGAPE, the unique mission of the NC & Western Conference of the United Methodists with Christians in Armenia, provides Christmas shoeboxes for children. Armenia is the oldest Christian nation in the world. For many children in refugee communities, this is the only Christmas gift they will receive. These boxes are a small gift containing a mighty message the priceless love of Christ. Each year this mission has grown as more and more children participate. Each year the need for boxes exceeds the number of boxes available. We have been asked to help fill the need. Look for boxes outside the Sanctuary soon! We will join other churches at Hinton Rural Life and be living in community with one another as we serve our brothers and sisters in the Appalachian mountains. Throughout the summer months, We ask for our church family to be in prayer. We ask for you to be in prayer for our team, to pray for our hearts that they will be open to feel God working in our lives; for our community at Hinton, that we may show God s love through our words and actions; for our bodies, that we may be full of energy to complete our project with joy; and for the family that we will be serving, that we may represent God s love and hope. We invite you to join us in worship on Sunday July 15th at 8:30 am so that we may be surrounded by our church family as we begin our Bull City youth summer short-term mission.

12 PAGE 12 BULL CITY YOUTH CONNECTING THROUGH CELEBRATION Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 On Friday June 8th, Durham Public Schools had their last day of school for students. To celebrate, Bull City Youth at Aldersgate UMC celebrated with friends from Mt. Sylvan UMC and Duke Memorial UMC. 1 night! 3 churches! 6 leaders! 40+ youth! TONS OF FUN! We started the evening at Aldersgate UMC with games and a time of worship and devotion. Then at 10 pm, we loaded up the buses and headed to Palace Pointe for a movie, bowling, and roller skating. Jay Butler, the Minister of Youth and Discipleship at Mt. Sylvan UMC, gave a devotion about how we all have individual stories, but together we are stronger. He read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, and emphasized how we as a body of Christ are stronger together, how much more fun we can have when we celebrate together, and how we are more helpful to the world when we work together.

13 PAGE 13 *ACS (ANNUAL CONFERENCE SESSIONS) JULY Being faithful is more than an annual checkup. Christians are called to go out into the world as field doctors healing people where they are. At Annual Conference Sessions (ACS), we explore issues of the church, nation, and world: What plagues our society? Throughout the week, we participate in small groups to build spiritual development and relationships, as well as exploring topics of interest. During ACS, the Conference youth body elects officers and other leaders. Youth are given a voice to debate and decide upon resolutions on contemporary issues facing the world today. ALL churches are encouraged to send at least 1 delegate. Schedule your checkup today! 17 PAGE 17 GROWING (GROW AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST AND AS A FAITHFUL COMMUNITY CALLED THE CHURCH) SUMMER IS A GREAT TIME TO MAKE VACATION TRAVEL PLANS. Some Sundays, we are at Aldersgate and some weeks we are visiting other churches all over the world. Our missions and ministries go on wherever we might be from week to week. There are several easy ways you can continue your offerings to Aldersgate even when you are out of town. SET UP AUTOMATIC GIVING using your bank account or credit card. Go to our web site, Aldersgate.org, click on missions & giving, then ONLINE GIVING. Using our partner VANCO, you can set up your automatic contribution to AUMC. Fill out an ELECTRONIC GIVING FORM and put it in Mary Taylor s mailbox. You have the OPTION TO GIVE WEEKLY, TWICE A MONTH, ONCE A MONTH, OR ANY OPTION OF YOUR CHOOSING. If you have any questions just give Mary a call at x 311 or by at mary@aldersgate.org. PASTOR S DISCRETIONARY FUND * Offerings to the Pastor s Discretionary Fund are always appreciated. These funds are used to help the poor and needy, inside our church as well as the community. The fund helps to pay the rent or utilities or purchase food for someone in need. To donate to this fund, just mark PDF on the memo line of your check, and our pastor will distribute these funds as they are needed. Giving to others always enriches our own lives. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.
