5 LINDEN PLACE NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER JULY [5] From the Chaplain s Desk For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. (Romans 5:10 ESV) On November 11, we will celebrate Remembrance Day. We will pause to honor those who fought for our freedom, we will reflect on the price many have paid and the benefits we receive through their sacrifice. The date that marks the end of World-War I, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month 1918, at the eleventh hour, is now an official day to remember all military personnel who have died in serving our country. The red remembrance poppy, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Field," written by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrea, has become an emblem of Remembrance Day. We have many freedoms today, the freedom to go to church, the freedom to work and provide for our families, the freedom to retire and receive a pension, which we could accumulate in times of freedom. As I reflect on the freedoms I take for granted, most of the time, I can t help but pausing and marvel at the sacrifice of many men and women. As I pause to reflect on the freedoms I enjoy at others expense, I also say thanks to Jesus Christ for the sacrifice He made for mankind. The apostle Paul said that while we were God s enemies Christ died to reconcile us to God. The writer of Hebrews said, And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. (Hebrews 10:19-20 NLT) Because of the sacrifice of Jesus, we can now enjoy freedom in the presence of our Father who is in heaven. We can enjoy every moment in fellowship with the divine, already here on earth. The emblem that helps us remember is the cross, which also points to the place of selfless sacrifice for the freedom of others. On November 11, let s pause to honor those who fought for our freedom. And as we do, let s remember the price that Jesus paid so that we might enjoy spiritual freedom, too. Ron Babel, Chaplain 5
