1 Clubhouse Newsletter 2017 Calendar Inside Season s Greetings Christmas is portrayed as a joyful event and half the people in Canada sees it as such while the other half sees it as a challenge. If you struggle with it, know that you are not alone. People from all walks of life and all different family configurations experience difficulties during Christmas. Financial pressures, societal pressures, family pressures and loneliness are most often cited as the culprits for making one feel down during Christmas. Commercial messaging starts earlier and earlier as the years go by. Societal expectations and the belief that everyone else is out having a good time can negatively affect us. Then there s family. While family can be of great support, family dynamics and demands can also take a toll on one s holiday wellness. Sometimes we fall back on the old ideas of what Christmas should be, but if it s not working for you, know that you can create new customs and traditions. Start with you and be authentic to yourself. Set boundaries. Schedule time for yourself. Do things that you enjoy. Practice gratitude, stay positive and find peace in your heart. Clubhouse has many Christmas activities and events. 2 TV or Books I haven t had TV going on for 10 years now. The price of cablevision is expensive now compared to what it used to be. Back when I had cable, it was $12 per month. Now it s upward of $30, I think, if not more, and that s just for the basic package. The price was the reason why I gave up the TV. I don t really miss TV, but I do go to my mom s to watch two shows: the Knowledge Network and Global for news. Once I gave up TV, I started reading more books. When I was in STEP, I read six books in a month. Most of the time I have a book on the go and I try to allocate time each day for reading. The latest book that I read was the Snow Blind by P. J. Tracy. It s a thriller and I liked the part where the victims were hidden in snowmen. It may sound gruesome, but the story is actually comical. Did you guess my favourite genre? It s mystery. Christmas is a great time for lazing back and reading books. I m yet to find my Christmas novel. Participant Services Office by Anthony We are coming to the end of 2017 and looking forward to We are also looking at the future of Participant Services. Next year s plans include another participant evaluation, as well as bringing in more guest speakers. Participant Services is currently doing the Coffee Talk, which happens on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Let us know if you have any topics you d like discussed in Clubhouse. Coffee Bar is slowly becoming a reality. We are planning to open in January. Let us know if you d like to join the Coffee Bar-team. This was to last through 12 days later known as the 12 days of Christmas. The first artificial Christmas tree was made in Germany, fashioned out of goose feathers that are dyed green! Artificial Christmas trees have outsold real ones since 1991.

3 News Customers have been waiting with much anticipation for all of the sparkle and dazzle of Christmas to arrive in the & the crew have been busy preparing all of the holiday products that we have been saving throughout the year. Twinkling lights and singing Santas have been tested, colorful glass balls and adorable ornaments carefully sorted and priced, the festive linens and ugly Christmas sweaters have been hung. Come and join in the magic of Christmas as you shop for a special gift for that hard to buy for person on your list or the perfect ornament to adorn your tree. And don t forget to stop and take the time to notice the new winter window display! This charmingly playful winter scene was created by Angela and Daniel and will continue to change and evolve as we move through the holiday season. TVP Timesheets Please note that next TVP cheques will be ready for pick up on Friday Dec 8. December timesheets are due on Friday the 22 nd. You can include your shifts till the end of December. Due to the holidays, we want to have your timesheets in early so that they will be processed in time for the cheque signing. Cheques will be ready on January 4 th. Cold and Flu Season Remember the cold and flu season article in our last newsletter? It had a lot of tips on how to stay healthy during this winter. As a refresher, we are printing the simplest and #1 way to protect yourself and those around you from contracting bugs: Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands! Soap and water are the best things against nasty bugs. Remember that you need to scrub your hands for 20 seconds, the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice. Don t forget to clean the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. Remember to also dry your hands! Germs cling to your skin more easily when it s wet. Also, please remember that if you do contract a bug, we ask that you stay home and wait till you are better before you return to CMHA. Yay, Ross! 4 Check the Calendar for these Events Art 101. Santa s workshop continues throughout December, bring your projects and ideas. Come out and make cards, candles, wreathes and wrapping. We will also have live music, guitar and singing. Come join in and let s get creative together Art Quest. Give yourself a break and join in at the art group for some creative time. We will be continuing with Santa s workshop. Many options to choose from or work on a project for a present. We will have materials for wrapping presents, tags and card writing, candles and wreath making. Birthday Celebrations. December birthday celebrations take place on Friday the 29 th. If your birthday falls for December you get a free piece of birthday cake. Others pay $0.50. Caravan Farm Theatre. At this point it s first come, first serve, meaning that if you pay your $10 you are in. The cost for the show is much more than that, but we ll cover the rest. Remember, we need 5 paid participants in order for this to be a go. The show is on Dec 12, leaving Clubhouse at 3:30 pm. Carolling and Games. Throughout December, especially between Christmas and New Year, we ll be playing games and carolling. Join us in being festive. Christmas Luncheon & Gift Exchange. Clubhouse Christmas luncheon is on Dec 21. We will also have a gift exchange. If you want to be part of the gift exchange, please bring a $5 generic gift. Connections. Join us on Wednesday, December 13, for carolling and free dinner. Rides home available. Drop-In. No drop-in in December due to other evening activities. See you in 2018! Fabric and Yarn Fridays. The Quilts & Crafts group continues meeting on Friday afternoons. Soon they will be in a yet new location. Come check it out. Gym & Swim. Thursdays, depart Clubhouse 1:45 pm. If you don t have an access pass, please talk to Robyn. Journaling. Journaling continues on Friday mornings. This is an effective self-care tool that can profoundly improve both your physical and mental well-being. Pool/Billiards. Wednesdays at 10:30 am with Robyn. Stretching. Get your Thursday started with some gentle stretching and mindfulness. Walking Group. Walk around the rec centre on Fridays at 11 am with Robyn. Meet at Clubhouse 10:45. Yoga. This is hot yoga at the Gratitude Yoga Studio. Meet there 8:45 am. For more info, talk to Robyn. Clubhouse hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 8:30 4:30. Tuesdays 8:30 1 pm. Fridays 8:30 3 pm. Website. You can also find us online: Peer Support Merry Xmas. My name is Sara and I m the Peer Support Coordinator. We have had a busy season. We have completed our peer support training in October. We have visited other CMHAs in Kelowna, Vernon and most recently Revelstoke. We have got some good ideas from how they run their programs. We are busy expanding our peer support program with the help from our other Peer Support Coordinator, Lori. We work together to improve and promote the program to support our peers and peer mentors. If you would like to be involved in the program, either as a peer mentor or a peer, contact myself or Lori. Have a great holiday!

5 Artists Opportunity Courtyard Gallery invites local artists to exhibit in our Annual Open Exhibition. Paintings, drawings, and 3 dimensional artwork will be considered. This is for all artists; whether you have just started or have been making art for years, feel free to join. Each artist is invited to submit 2 original art pieces, no larger than 16x20 inches. Three dimensional pieces should be similar in size. No reproductions will be accepted. Proper hanging wire on the artwork is required. Due to limited space available in the gallery, there will be a selection process; however, each artist will be guaranteed to have at least one piece included in the exhibition. If you are interested in joining please see Nanina at the Clubhouse to fill out an entry form and go over the details of the show. There will be a small fee of 5 dollars to secure your participation in the show. Deadline is January 4 th Courtyard Gallery, Enderby Artist s Initiative, Enderby, BC UNITED Against Violence Against Women UNITED Against Violence Against Women is an the College on Dec 6. Clubhouse will attend this, leaving at 3:30 pm. If you are interested in going, please talk to Kim or Paivi. Please note that Clubhouse will 3:30 this day. You feel like saying... Christmas? Humbug! Are you starting to feel anxious about the upcoming Christmas season? Here are some suggestions that may help you cope Calm your mind Find a quiet place and meditate, listen to some soothing sounds of nature or soft music. 2. Breathe - Take a couple relaxing breaths by inhaling through your nose to the count of 4, holding that breath for 7 seconds and then exhaling through your mouth to the count of 8. Do this as much and as often as needed to reduce stress or anxiety. 3. Drink a lot... of water! It is important to stay hydrated. 4. Maintain your Wellness Routines Exercise, eat healthy meals and snacks, enjoy some fresh air. 5. Take a cat nap Set your alarm for 30 minutes or less. Lie down, close your eyes and relax. 6. Keep things simple Know that the holidays can be a physically draining time. Decide what you want to do... make a plan... be flexible to eliminate as much pressure as you can. 7. Have fun... If you are not having fun or are not going to enjoy yourself, do you want to commit to that activity? 8. Choose to be with positive and supportive family and friends.
