2 LINDEN PLACE NEWSLETTER JULY JULY [2] By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. (Hebrews 11:8) Mennonites came to North America after direct persecution had ended in Europe. There are references to Dutch Mennonites being in Manhattan (New York) as early as Over a period of almost 200 years, small groups of Swiss and South German Mennonites crossed the ocean and settled in areas, such as Pennsylvania. From the first wave of Dutch-Prussian-Russian Mennonites came from Russia and settled in Manitoba, Minnesota, South Dakota, Kansas, and Nebraska. They endured dangerous and difficult adventures looking for a land where they could live in freedom, especially religious freedom. (Dyck, An Introduction to Mennonite History) Just as the early pilgrims who first made their way to North America, Abraham did not always know where he was going. He was pitching his tent here and there as he sojourned a land that belonged to others. Even his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob had raised their families in tents, knowing that they were not at their final destination. The Bible tells us that Abraham and other men and women of faith were seeking a homeland and desired a better country, that is a heavenly one (Hebr. 11:13-16). As we celebrate Canada Day on July 1, we acknowledge that we live in one of the best countries in the world, and yet as Christians, we know by faith that this is not our eternal home. In fact, the apostle John advises us not to love this world because the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever (1 John 2:17). I believe that as we are pilgrims on this earth we have much to be thankful for, such as religious freedom, for which many of our Christian forefathers endured persecution. Our pilgrimage today calls us for a life of purity and holiness, to live and walk by faith so that one day God can acknowledge us in the same way as He did Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. All you have to do is bring $3 and enjoy some juicy watermelon and fresh Roll Kuchen MCC Donation Day Monday, July 16 MCC Thrift Store will be coming on Monday, July 16 to Linden Place to pick-up any donations you want to donate to them If you have items to donate, and they are small enough for you to carry, please bring them to the MPR on Monday morning before 11am. (PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT bring them any sooner, as we don t want items being stored in the MPR for any length of time) If you have larger items, just let Janie know and she will have the MCC workers come up to your apartment to collect them. If this works well for everyone, we are planning on having MCC continue to come each month. 3

4 LINDEN PLACE NEWSLETTER JULY JULY [4] Soup s Hot Reminder Since there have been some changes in our Soup s Hot Program recently, here is a reminder of the official information, please call Janie if you have any questions. - We can no longer order extra jars of soup, bread or pie, but we encourage you to come for the whole meal. - If there is left over soup, we can sell it for $3/pint and $6/quart. Those who come to the meal get to purchase soup first. - If you have ordered a meal and need to cancel, please notify me ASAP, preferably before Monday Noon of the week you have signed up for. - Please sign up or call me by Noon on Monday to place your order for that week. Mary does She ll have all your fresh favourites waiting for you in the MPR Hot Dog Lunch Monday, July 23 Join us for a BBQ Hot Dog Lunch on Monday, July 23 at 12pm in the MPR. Cost is $5 and that will get you 2 Hot Dogs, Chips, Drinks and an Ice Cream Dessert Watch for a sign-up sheet. 4

Enjoying some tasty watermelon and roll kuchen Watering Your Garden at Linden There may be some confusion about the barrels of water, so here are the rules to clear that up: any tenant can use any of the barrels to get water from for watering their garden. It doesn t matter where your garden is, you can get water from any of the barrels we have available. Our maintenance guys will continue to keep all the barrels full of water as best as they can. The gardens are looking so very nice here at Linden Place, let s all continue to enjoy them 5
