Woodhaven Hub JANUARY 2015 A Note From the TRC Happy New Year! I hope you all had a very wonderful Christmas full of Christ s love and the warmth of family and friends whether near or far! This edition of the Woodhaven Hub is packed full of useful information, and I would highly encourage you all to read through it, as you may be surprised by some items that could be of interest. Gift Cards If your children or grandchildren are looking for a great gift idea for you, consider recommending a gift card for our Woodhaven hair care services or a Mani/Pedi appointment. These can be purchased through me during office hours. Mani-Pedi Speaking of Mani-Pedi, Becky Elias will be coming back to Woodhaven this month which is also why the date and time has changed. This month she will be coming on Friday, Jan. 22nd and starting appointments at 4:30 pm, but beginning in February, her regular time will be the third Wednesday of the month starting appointments at 4:30 pm. We are very grateful for Rena Loewen s willingness to fill in while Becky was away on a maternity leave. Puzzles There are currently too many puzzles in the basement storage room. I will be cleaning out and organizing those shelves in February, so if you have donated any of the puzzles and want to ensure that they are not brought to MCC, please talk to me before the end of this month. Volunteers If you would be interested in volunteering with setting up/taking down chairs for events or handing out the Carillon, please let me know. Referrals For those who read the Tenant Council minutes this last month, you will have noticed that we are trying to get a few new services up and running for you! For both the Personal Maintenance service and Snow Removal service, if you or someone you know might be interested, please direct them to me, so that we can set up these services before winter is over. Pearl Buhler Upcoming Events Friday, Jan. 1 New Years Day (Offices Closed) Tuesday, Jan. 5 James & Kathy Wollman (7:00) Wednesday, Jan. 6 Knitting Club (2:30) Thursday, Jan. 7 Book Mobile (2:00-3:00) Friday, Jan. 8 John & Helen Unger (7:00) Sunday, Jan. 10 Abe Loewen & Friends (7:00) Wednesday, Jan. 13 Coffee Time (4:30) Thursday, Jan. 14 Bake Sale (2:30-4:30) Friday, Jan. 15 Pete Neufeld & Friends (7:00) Saturday, Jan. 16 Mitchell Seniors Choir (7:45) Continued on page 2

A Note from the Chaplain I enjoy the beauty of a winter snowfall especially watching the large snowflakes drifting lazily down to form a warm soft covering for the earth a very calm and peaceful scene. Hoarfrost also amazes me with the beautiful pictures it paints on windows and the intricate patterns it forms on the tips of branches. Where do the designs come from? How does it all happen? God asked Job some questions about snow, Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail? Job 38:22. The treasures referred to here are storehouses and it does pose an interesting question where does God store all the snow? As I understand it, snow forms as moisture in the air cools enough to crystallize and as these crystals stick together they become snowflakes. At cold temperatures the snowflakes remain small but with warmer temperatures they can become quite large as many more crystals stick together. God further asks Job Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? Job 38:29. God was challenging Job with these questions even as a teacher would challenge his pupils. God knew the answers and Job needed to trust God with them. God knows the answers even when we don t and we need to continue to trust Him. He will continue to lead us through the difficult circumstances. Continued from page 1 Monday, Jan. 18 Soup Swap (2:30) Wednesday, Jan. 20 Ridgewood Youth Games Night (7:00) Friday, Jan. 22 Mani-Pedi (4:30) Call Pearl to book an appointment Wednesday, Jan. 27 Steinbach Alert Now Presentation (2:30) Wednesday, Jan. 27 Sommerfeld Youth (7:00) Thursday, Jan. 28 Bingo (2:30) We also have questions about things we have wondered about. Questions about the world around us and also questions about things that have happened in our lives why are certain things the way they are? God knows the answers even when we don t and we need to continue to trust Him. He will continue to lead us through the difficult circumstances. God bless you in the New Year! Peter Berg 2 2

ERIK (Emergency Response Information Kit) I would like to emphasize the importance of the ERIK packages that many of you already have filled out and on your fridges. These kits provide necessary information for Emergency personnel to respond quickly to your situation. As medications and contact information can change, please make sure that you check the information on the kit to ensure that it is all up-to-date and accurate. If you would like a new ERIK kit or want some help to update the one you already have, please feel free to give me a call and we can arrange a time to meet. I am also willing to type out the information for you, or make copies if you would like to keep a condensed version in your wallet/purse. Input Sought for Home Care Review Manitoba s Home Care Leadership Team is inviting Manitobans to share their perspectives about Home Care through an online consultation. If you would like to contribute to this survey, feel free to visit health/homecare/consultation.html before January 15, or come by my (Pearl s) office and I can assist you with this. My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds, of your saving acts all day long though I know not how to relate them all. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come. Psalm 71:15, 8 Tenant Insurance HavenGroup strongly encourages all tenants to purchase tenant insurance. Not only does this cover your personal property for things such as fire and theft, but also includes liability insurance. Most insurance companies also have tenant packages that include loss of use which covers the expense of a hotel or apartment in the case that you cannot live in your suite. Thank goodness for the first snow. It was a reminder no matter how old you became and how much you d seen things could still be new if you were willing to believe they still mattered. ~Candace Bushnell 3 3

Coffee Time Wednesday, January 13 at 4:30 pm Basement Meeting Room Cost: $6.00/person This month the Social Committee will be serving New Years Cookies, cold cut meat, and pickles for our January Coffee Time meal. Everyone is welcome! Soup Swap Monday, January 18 at 2:30 pm Woodhaven Lounge January is a cold month, and there s not much that is more cozy than a bowl of hot soup on a winter s day. I know several of you are in the habit of making a big batch of soup, and canning some of it for later meals, but why not add some variety to your soup? Bring a mason jar of your homemade soup and swap with someone else for a jar of their homemade soup. If you d like to try 2 new soups, bring along 2 jars to exchange. If you have any questions about the events listed here, or other events posted on the program calendar, please contact Pearl at Bingo *Note the change of date* Beginning this month, we will have a volunteer come in to call out the bingo numbers. Lena Bueckert has offered to lead Bingo on the fourth Thursday of each month. Steinbach Alert Now Wednesday, January 27 at 2:30 pm Woodhaven Lounge Denis Vassart will be coming to Woodhaven to explain Steinbach Alert Now which is a free emergency notification service provided by the City of Steinbach. This service notifies Steinbach s residents of an emergency using their landline, cell phone, or . Christmas Coffee Time

Entrance Keys The Woodhaven Manor tenant entrance lockset will be changed in January It has been several years since this lockset has been changed and in the last year, the keys that have been cut for this door tend to not work very well because they have been copied too many times. We also strive to maintain a secure building and in order to attempt to control the number of keys in circulation, each apartment will be given two (2) new front door keys only. If you wish to get additional keys cut, you will need to have this done and it is at your expense. Please remember that the onus is on the tenant to ensure you are giving out keys only to people you trust. Should you have Lifeline, please ensure you get keys distributed to your contact people. Don t put a period where God has put a comma. He is not done with you. No matter your age, you are a work in progress and He is still working. ~Greg Laurie Any questions can be directed to Bonnie in the basement office. Master Key Holders The master key holders are: Andrew & Esther Dueck Lorne & Lillian Loewen Gerda Plett Please make sure you remove Alice Laing as a master key holder on your phone list and add Gerda Plett in her place. The role of the master key holders is to help individuals who may have locked themselves out of their suites, or to assist Emergency personal if the tenant is unable to unlock their door for them. The Keyring: An invention created so that you can lose all of your keys at once. Pearl Buhler Tenant Resource Coordinator Phone: pbuhler@southernhealth.ca 5 5
