5 5 Barbara Axford has asked that Church News be prepared occasionally for inclusion in Plain Facts and on our website: Since these are no longer published as news they have been re-named. Plains Church Notes 29 July 2018 With Pastor Margaret Bell on vacation, Sally Martyn, Sparta, spoke about Quakers: Their Religion and their Ways. Many Quakers left the colonies at the time of the American Civil War (late 1700s) and Jonathan Doan eventually came to this area in He then recruited others from the Niagara area, Pennsylvania and New York so that a thriving Quaker community developed in the area in 1820s and was known as The Corners. It became popular to name places after Greek cities. Aylmer was known as Troy, Corinth is to the East of Aylmer and The Corners was named Sparta. The Quakers, also known as The Religious Society of Friends, built their first Meeting House near the Quaker Cemetery across the road from the Sparta Public School. The present Meeting House on Quaker Road is their 3 rd and was built in Buildings are plain and functional with no added decoration. Part of the Christian church, Quakers focus on certain beliefs. They profess no creed believing everyone has a direct connection with God. Hence they have no hierarchy of clergy leaders and no sacraments. Their worship services are quiet. They wait in silence. Waiting for worship. Waiting for someone to be moved by the Spirit of God to speak. Often they have no music other than some songs before or after the worship time. They refuse to swear oaths but will affirm they will tell the truth. Their word is their bond. They are opposed to slavery and assisted in the Underground railway system. When there are weddings or funerals they wait in silence. A couple to be married write their own vows which they speak aloud during the silence. Everyone present signs the marriage certificate but it must also be signed by the clerk of the meeting making it legal. Funerals similarly are quiet unless someone feels moved to share a memory or honor the departed. They uphold democracy, trial by jury, the equality of everyone before God and the importance of public education. In time of war, Quakers will serve in non-combat duties. Sally was thanked by Barbara Axford with the applause of the congregation. Todd Noble was the presiding deacon and worship leader. Amy Dale, piano, provided the music for worship. Guest speakers for the next 2 Sundays will be Kathy Noble, talking about the history of the Lord s Prayer. The Rev. Paulo Andrade, Associate Pastor of Hillside church community meeting on Adelaide St South, London in the YFC Youth Centre will speak on 12 August. Malcolm Rust Plains Church Notes 19 August 2018 Wearing her purple t-shirt proclaiming, This is what a preacher looks like, Pastor Margaret Bell was welcomed back after her vacation. The shirt was a gift from the Rev. Richard Darling and his wife, Vi who visited Plains a few weeks before. Margaret commented on the changes in people s behavior and attitude on those occasions when she has worn the t-shirt or a clerical collar in the community. In those situations she also tended to be more careful about what she said and did. Reading from Ephesians chapter 5 she challenged everyone to consider the impact if we all wore shirts, This is what a Christian looks like. Of course, some are anxious not to offend and avoid putting the sign of a fish or wearing a tattoo which proclaims we are a follower of Jesus. In the process we may miss opportunities to speak of our faith and project a positive image as a Christian. Many of other faiths, Jews, Muslims and Sikhs wear distinctive religious clothing regularly. The writer to the church in Ephesus encouraged members of the Christian community to walk in love and to walk in the light, worshipping together and living thankfully. Remember, said Pastor Bell, Actions speak louder than words. Music for worship was provided by Sherry Graham at the organ and Amy Dale at the piano. Deacon Phyllis Huffman was the greeter and our sound technician was Karen Cook. Ken Greenslade and Floyd Axford also took part. Over 60 people attended. Malcolm Rust What did you learn in school today? Not enough, I have to go back tomorrow! Why was school easier for cave people? Because there was no history to study!

7 National Multiculturalism Day NOTE: Malcolm Rust, back row, left side, pink shirt On Wednesday, June 27th the St. Thomas-Elgin Local Immigration Partnership (STELIP) was excited to host their second annual flag raising-ceremony in front of City Hall as a part of National Multiculturalism Day. The ceremony, which featured the raising of the STELIP flag, a selection of short speeches emphasizing the historical role and continued importance of diversity and culture in St. Thomas and Elgin and the reading of a community pledge:- "As a member of the St. Thomas-Elgin community, I pledge: o To respect all members of our community regardless of gender, ethnicity, nationality, citizenship status, religion, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status; o To learn and share with others whose experiences are different from my own; o To speak out against all forms of prejudice; o To engage in and contribute to the diversity of our community and recognize diversity as our strength." Everyone was encouraged to wear something that expressed their cultural heritage: from a kilt to a soccer jersey, a hijab to a bonnet. To help celebrate this National Day STELIP produced a video that was played at the local Tim Horton s, OnRoute, and at the Galaxy Theater. 8 PASTOR S PAGE Your Faith Family Tree September is back! With its arrival comes the return to school and a return to the regularly scheduled business of the Fall season. After a very warm summer, I m looking forward to wearing my jeans and socks with my shoes! I m also looking forward, as I know you are to getting into the groove of worship and spiritual nourishment. We are so grateful to Leena Sibley and Hazel Brekelmans and those who will be helping them with a brand new and exciting Sunday School season. Choir and the Breakfast groups and Ladies Aid will soon convene for another year of fellowship, fun and inspiration. If you would like to join one of those groups, just let me know and I ll hook you up! If you have ideas for a new group let me know that too! On Thursdays starting in mid-september, a group of folks will meet at the church to learn more about the history of our faith. Many people tend to think of history as a boring recital of names and dates. However this DVD presentation promises to make Christian History easier. That s the title, actually: Christian History Made Easy. It s a twelve session DVD but we re going to tackle it in two pieces: six sessions this Fall, and if we find it really interesting and fun, we ll do the other six sessions in the New Year. The DVD group meets at 10:30 on Thursday mornings. The first item of business is having a mid morning snack, along with coffee and tea in the church kitchen. We gather around the kitchen island to enjoy whatever one of the folks has contributed by way of snack, and then we bring our coffees with us into the back of the sanctuary to watch the DVD. The facilitator of the DVD discusses a topic for a few minutes and then we circle our chairs to discuss any pertinent information/questions/sharing that the topic raises in us. We close the session with prayer and housekeeping items, like, who would like to bring the snack next Thursday? We have had consistent attendance of around 10 people for the last few DVD gatherings which indicates to me that the group discussion and fellowship time is meaningful and worth sharing! So if you are available on Thursday mornings starting on Thursday, September 27 please consider joining in the fun. Don t worry if you are not a student of history! This study promises to give some of the basics and along with them will introduce us to some of the people whose faith have shaped/influenced the church, making it and us what we are today. So come and learn more about your Faith Family Tree. Let me know of your interest in attending. Blessings to you,
