He was a former long-time organist at St. Andrew's United Church, St. Thomas. He will be missed. GOD HATH NOT PROMISED God hath not promised skies always blue, Flower strewn pathways all our lives through; God hath not promised sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain. God hath not promised we shall not know Toil and temptations, trouble and woe; He hath not told us we shall not bear Many a burden, many a care. God hath not promised smooth roads and wide, Swift, easy travel, needing no guide; Never a mountain rocky and steep, Never a river turbid and deep. But God hath promised strength for the day, Rest for the labor, light for the way, Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy, undying love. Annie J.Flint 1919 On Earth Day, take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.

Photo by Malcolm Rust This group from Plains was the first The Tate family: You may have heard of the Tate family. They are in every organization. There is Dic Tate who wants to run everything. Ro Tate is always trying to change things. Agi Tate stirs up trouble whenever possible, with the help of Irri Tate, who is always there to lend a hand. Every time new ideas are suggested, Hesi Tate and Vegi Tate are there to say they can t possibly work. Ima Tate just wants to copy other organizations and never try anything new. Devas Tate loves to be interruptive and Poten Tate wants to be the big shot. But it is Facilli Tate, Cogi Tate and Medi Tate who always save the day and get everyone pulling together. The Trouble Tree The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles as he hugged his two sons and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward, as he walked me to the car, we passed the tree and curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. Oh, that s my trouble tree, he replied. I know I can t help having troubles on the job, but one thing s for sure. Troubles don t belong in the house with my wife and boys. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again. Funny thing is, he smiled, when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.

7 PASTOR S PAGE In the Spring of the year that I began my pastorate at Plains (1990) I met with the Deacons and asked them, Would you like me to do a Maundy Thursday Service or a Good Friday Service? What s Maundy Thursday? they asked, to which I brilliantly responded, It s the Thursday before Good Friday. Actually that s all I could find out about the day in the Dictionary. Maundy Thursday is also known as Holy Thursday. In some churches the devout gather to celebrate communion or the ritual of foot-washing or both, commemorating Jesus last hours with his disciples just prior to his arrest. The Deacons chose that I do a Good Friday Service instead and for the past 27 Good Fridays a small group of the devout have gathered at the church at 10 a.m. to mark this somber, terrible, yet Holiest of days. In my younger days, the Jerseyville young people s group joined with others to mark Good Fridays at a little country church located just south of Brantford. The service was held at 7 a.m. inside the church. The sanctuary was always decorated to the rafters with Easter lilies and other flowers, all ready for the BIG DAY on Sunday. We sang Easter up from the grave he arose type songs and, well, it felt way more like EASTER than GOOD FRIDAY. I suppose the sermons were focused on the Cross. Don t tell anybody, but I don t remember a single word of those sermons. It was a long time ago after all. Besides that, right after worship we walked out of the sanctuary directly into the hall where a full menu breakfast awaited. So while we were singing Easter Hymns and looking at all the lilies the aroma of bacon, eggs and coffee wafted into the room from the kitchen! After the HOUR long service of smelling breakfast and then having breakfast, some of the pilgrims travelled to the Big Baptist Church in Brantford to celebrate a traditional communion service. Those of us too full to be that faithful went home. Fast forward several years and I am a seminary student mid-way through my third year of Divinity College. I was just months away from meeting up with the fine, faithful friends at Plains! My Supervising Pastor in my field education church invited me to their Good Friday Service. I walked into a sanctuary that had been stripped of all ornamentation. The colorful banners were gone. There was no organist at the big pipe organ. The minister sat alone on the platform beside a table. On the table sat the bread and juice in the usual communion set. We were handed scriptures to read and questions upon which to meditate. No one read aloud or sang or prayed aloud. When we were ready we went forward individually to receive communion from the minister. Then we could sit down again or leave. The room was as silent... as... a...grave. And that s the Day when I FELT I had experienced a Meaningful Good Friday Service. If you haven t attended a Good Friday Service at Plains I assure you that there will be no lilies, no banners, no triumphant music, and no deliciously tantalizing bacon or coffee odors! But if you want or need to experience the darkness before the light, the sadness before the joy, the suffering before the glory, then come. A few of the devout will gather for the 28 th time to remember Jesus and hold a sacred vigil. There s room at the Cross for you. Grace to you, my dear friends,
