7 Joining the Song of Creation Lent Quiet Day March Tuesday 5 th March 9:30am for 10:00am start - 4:00pm exploring St Francis Canticle of the Creatures. Towards the end of his life, Francis of Assisi composed his great song of praise, which encompasses not just the beauty but also the brokenness of the world. In this Quiet Day in the first week of Lent we ll be reflecting on how even the more difficult experiences of our lives and of the world can be integrated and transformed. Brother Samuel is a member of the Society of St Francis, an Anglican Franciscan religious order. For many years based in rural West Dorset where he was involved with the Hilfield Friary Community. He now lives in another Friary in East London, which is engaged with the local community and provides hospitality for those on the margins of our society. Peace and Good Quiet Day Thursday 28 th March 9:30am for 10:00am start - 4:00pm To be a Pilgrim Lent Weekend Retreat 155/ 171 5pm Friday 8 th 2pm Sunday 10 th March The word pilgrim is full of adventure it conjures up images of roads and paths, new places and companions, challenges and surprises. In this retreat we explore what it means to be a Christian pilgrim and how a pilgrim spirit can transform our lives. We will reflect on the way in which pilgrimage spirituality helps us to understand better our landscape, our selves and God. Revd Dr Sally Welch is an experienced pilgrim who has undertaken many journeys in the UK and Europe. She has written books on pilgrimage and its companion the labyrinth, and leads workshops and retreats throughout the country. She is the Editor of BRF New Daylight Bible Reading Notes, and the Vicar of a Cotswold parish. St Francis is complicated. A Christian of his time, influenced by its courtly and military ideals, but also prophetic, a bringer of peace in mediaeval Assisi, and an inspiration today. 800 years ago he set off on crusade and met the Sultan of Egypt. What was his motivation and what were the consequences of this meeting for him and for us today? Revd Canon Pat Mossop - 20 years a solicitor, 25 years a priest in Chelmsford Diocese serving in Essex University and East London, currently in Interim Ministry, his faith deepened by being an Anglican Franciscan Tertiary.

14 The Friends of Pleshey The Friends of Pleshey group was founded in 1932 when Lucy Menzies was Warden, and since that time have played a vital and active part in the ministry of the Retreat House. She was a friend of Evelyn Underhill who became a well-known and respected retreat leader, conducting her first retreat in Pleshey in She said, of Pleshey, this place seems soaked in love and prayer and many of her retreats were conducted here. The Friends of Pleshey help support the work and ministry of the Retreat House by: praying for the life and ministry of all who visit and work there, when able, giving time, support and money for the work of the Retreat House, garden and chapel, attending retreats, open days, fund raising events and meetings, by offering to be a welcomer to guests. Our candle is lit in the chapel at noon each Friday and a vigil is kept for one hour in order to hedge this place with prayer. Why be a Friend? To be part of the Body of Christ that gives thanks for time spent at the Retreat House and wants the same to be available to others. If able, and willing; be a part of the rota that prays on a Friday from 12:00pm for one hour, either at home or in the chapel. This supports the House and all staff as well those who visit the house; join the team that welcomes those coming to the House for a retreat. This assists the House staff immensely and is such an important ministry. to support annual events such as the retreats, open day, concert, stand at the Bradwell Festival day and work days. receive a newsletter that will give up to date information on forthcoming events and reports on recent ones. Please contact the House if you wish to enquire further about any of the above or to join The Friends of Pleshey
