2 The Compassion of Christ Dear Friends, I hope everyone had a blessed and safe Independence Day! As I sit and write this column, I cannot help but think about the compassion of Christ that we have heard about in the Gospels these past few Sundays. Jesus showed compassion to those that everyone else turned against. This is similar to St. Francis of Assisi and his compassion toward the lepers - a group of people that were physically and emotionally ostracized by society. Jesus performed miracles to show that He was sent by God the Father and to let people know that God cares for those who suffer. When Jesus performed a miracle, it was so that the people could have faith. This kind of compassion and love is something that we should emulate if we are to be Disciples of Christ. Claire Ziolkowski talks about this in her bulletin column from a few weeks ago, if you have not read it, I encourage you to go back and read it. The Gospel for today talks about the twelve apostles being sent out to cleanse unclean spirits. This term refers to those who were viewed as strange or even evil. Jesus has shown these past few weeks that He has the power to heal both body and spirit and in today s Gospel He shared this power with his apostles. These twelve apostles were selected from his disciples, see Mark 3: The word apostle means one who is sent, we as Christians are also sent to proclaim the good news of Christ and to be his hands and feet in the world. This is a message that the youth in faith formation will be reflecting on this year. This effort from the apostles is a communal one. Their work together is stronger and more authentic than it would have been if they were on their own. It s the same with us, the Christian message and deed can only be authentically proclaimed in and through the community of faith that is the Church. In our work with others, we can build this community of faith and invite others to take part. This week I encourage you to seek how you are called to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. Maybe you are called to sing in the choir and sing the praises of God. Maybe there is a neighbor that you see is struggling and needs help. Maybe you are called to volunteer at Bonifest or to be a catechist. Maybe you are called to fight for pro-life issues and for the reunification of parents and children who have been separated. Maybe you are called to take on something new. Whatever your calling, Christ will be there to guide you and to walk with you. May God give you peace. Peace and all Good, Hannah Bergland, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry Eucharistic Adoration Include adoration in your devotions this summer. An Unjust Law Is Not a Law at All A Statement from the Archdiocese of Milwaukee on the Attorney General Jeff Sessions' Defense of the Current Immigration Policy On Thursday June 14, 2018, Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended the current immigration policy of separating children from their undocumented parents; Attorney General Sessions explained that having kids does not give migrants immunity from prosecution, and found justification for his policies in the Bible. Some days before, the Attorney General had announced a change in the immigration policy: victims of domestic abuse and gang violence will not qualify for asylum under federal law. In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote: One may well ask: 'How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?' The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that 'an unjust law is no law at all.' What makes a law to be just is the presence of God s truth; and a law that advocates for the inhumane separation of children from their parents lacks precisely of any truth. As Bishop Joe Vasquez eloquently put it, separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral. The decision to ignore the need to protect victims of domestic abuse and violence is likewise immoral. In his statement, the President of the USCCB, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo explains that denying such protection negates decades of precedents that have provided protection to women fleeing domestic violence. Unless overturned, the decision will erode the capacity of asylum to save lives, particularly in cases that involve asylum seekers who are persecuted by private actors. We urge courts and policy makers to respect and enhance, not erode, the potential of our asylum system to preserve and protect the right to life. Both Congress and the Trump Administration have the moral responsibility of correcting the immorality of such a law, which by no means can be justified by using the Bible. Our broken immigration law should recover the human person and the common good as a center. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee is in full solidarity with all those affected by these immoral policies, and prays and hopes that true dialogue brings clarity and a just immigration law that reflect our Gospel values.
