2 Include adoration in your devotions this summer. You are personally invited to join me for an intimate hour of prayer. Admission is always free. I have your reserved seat waiting. Love always, Jesus Eucharistic Adoration begins after the 8:00 am Mass each Tuesday and ends just before the 8:00 am Mass on Wednesday. More adorers are welcome to join us any hour. An adorer is needed for the 10:30-11:30 am slot immediately. Please contact Susie Schmideler at sschmide@sbcglobal.net or Our God Is a God of Love Happy Sunday, Friends! I hope this column finds you all thriving and enjoying your summer. If you have a moment, read through this Sunday s readings again. I think they speak to the situation in our country in very important and challenging ways. (Wisdom 1: 13-15, 2: 23-24; 2 Corinthian 8:7, 9, 13-15; and Mark 5:21-43) As I prayed through these readings, I found a somewhat scathing rebuke from the Holy Spirit about how we are treating our brothers and sisters on the border. God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living The creatures of the world are wholesome For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him. These words from Wisdom are clear. All human beings have dignity, regardless of whether or not they entered this country with documentation, regardless of how many others are fleeing persecution and seeking asylum here. If God himself does not rejoice in the suffering of human beings, even when they sin or break laws, neither can we. For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. Jesus himself, in the second reading, shows us the path we are to take by modeling it for us. He was rich but became poor for our sake. He was God and became human for our sake. We have all received from Jesus what we did not deserve and did not earn. There is not a person among us who has not greatly benefited from the unconditional charity of another. And we are called to imitate him and do the same for others: Not that others should have relief while you are burdened, but that as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their needs, so that their abundance may also supply your needs. While we have abundance, we are asked to give to those who do not - out of Christian charity, first and foremost, but also because the day will come when we are the ones in need and will we not expect others to have compassion on us? The Kingdom of God is a kingdom of equality. It is a kingdom in which we share our bounty with others. Again, because Jesus Christ shared his bounty with us, freely, undeservedly, unconditionally. And we see this in the Gospel. Mark describes for us Jesus compassion and mercy toward two members of the community: one a rich, powerful synagogue official and one a sick, unclean hemorrhaging woman. And the really radical thing is that Jesus treats them exactly the same. He answers both of their prayers. He heals the synagogue official s daughter and he heals the hemorrhaging woman. He does not discriminate based on social status, wealth, legalities, or country of origin. He does not ask for documentation before showing compassion and mercy. He responds with charity. This is what it means to hold a consistent ethic of life. Issues of immigration and treatment of people at the border are pro-life issues. We may disagree on what immigration issues exist. We may disagree on how to solve those issues. These issues are complicated and there is no clear answer. But as Christians, we cannot disagree that it is wrong to forcibly separate children from their parents without grave cause. We cannot disagree that it is wrong to prevent their reunification. We cannot call ourselves Christians and believe that people deserve to be treated as less than human because they aren t from this country, entered this country without documentation, or because they dared come to a checkpoint seeking asylum from the terrors of their home country. As many U.S. Catholic Bishops have said, what does it mean to be pro-life but support the unjust treatment of humans, especially children, at the border? The Scriptures for today are clear. Our God is a God of life. He is a God of love. He is a God who created us with dignity and never rejoices in the debasement of that dignity or the infliction of suffering. He leads with compassion. So the questions I leave us with are these: How can we seek policies that lead with compassion? How can we respect the right of all people to seek a safe home, their right to immigration and asylum, while also respecting our right to safe and secure boarders? How might the Gospel read if, rather than a synagogue official and a hemorrhaging woman, Jesus met a border patrol officer and an undocumented immigrant? Would his response be any different? How can you be Christ in the midst of this conflict? May God bless us and guide us in these challenging and complicated times. May he show us a way forward that is both compassionate and just. And may he watch over the children taken and alone. Yours in Christ, Claire Ziolkowski, Pastoral Associate Eucharistic Adoration Readings for the Week of July 1, 2018 Sunday: Wis 1:13-15; 2:23-24/Ps 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11, 12, 13/ 2 Cor 8:7, 9, 13-15/Mk 5:21-43 or 5:21-24, 35b-43 Monday: Am 2:6-10, 13-16/Ps 50:16bc-17, 18-19, 20-21, 22-23/ Mt 8:18-22 Tuesday: Eph 2:19-22/Ps 117:1bc, 2 [Mk 16:15]/Jn 20:24-29 Wednesday: Am 5:14-15, 21-24/Ps 50:7, 8-9, 10-13, 16bc-17/ Mt 8:28-34 Thursday: Am 7:10-17/Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 11/Mt:1-8 Friday: Am 8:4-6, 9-12/Ps 119:2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131 [Mt 4:4]/ Mt 9:9-13 Saturday: Am 9:11-15/Ps 85:9ab and 10, 11-12, [cf. 9b]/ Mt 9:14-17 Next Sunday: Ez 2:2-5/Ps 123:1-2, 2, 3-4 [2cd]/2 Cor 12:7-10/ Mk 6:1-6a St. Boniface Catholic Parish Page 2 July 1, 2018

4 Independence Day Prayer for the Nation God of our forebears, in tumultuous times our ancestors made their way to a new land, seeking prosperity and peace. The wealth of a new nation lay before them, as well as the challenge to use wisely the gifts of the good earth and the industriousness of a people forged in the crucible of revolution and the high-minded ideals of life and liberty. Strengthen within us the pursuit of justice, the desire for equality, the love of true freedom. May all the citizens of our country work unceasingly to promote the common good so that all may share in the pursuit of happiness sought by the founders of our land. Amen. Family Promise Thanks Last week, four families stayed at St. Boniface for the week. Thanks to Ann Lambert and her group of volunteers for their commitment to this project.
