1 St. Paul's Epistle. Paul's Episcopal Church Pine & Academy Streets P.O. Box 602 Georgetown, DE Telephone: (302) INTRODUCTION OF THE REVEREND JOSEPH M. RUSHTON November 2011 Web site: Office SAYING GOODBYE Saying goodbye is not something that I do easily. I remember when a friend had a going away party for me in DC before I left there to start my interim career in Maryland. All of the people who attended said that I d be back in the area after one ear. Well, it s been a couple years now and things certainly have changed. Several people from the party have moved elsewhere and I have built a house here in Lewes with plans to stay. God does work in mysterious ways, doesn t she? Well, it s time to say good bye to all of the people at St. Paul s Church. This has truly been a refreshing and exciting experience. I came last year when you were having the Fair Trade Festival. It wasn t until after the festival was over that I really understood all the work involved in it. You have a truly courageous leader in Karen, and a hardy group organizing it again. I kept waiting for some down time after the festival and didn t see any until after Memorial Day! There were luncheons, dinners, youth festivals, etc., and you didn t seem to rest. But that s good it shows that you are doing God s work here on this block. I also have to thank Russ and Chris and the rest of the Vestry for teaching me things about my ministry that I didn t know. You have an excellent Vestry that does a lot of good work for this church. Keep doing it! Lastly, you are about to welcome your new priest, the Reverend. Joe Rushton. I know that you will show him the same welcoming environment that you showed me. Thank you for all the love and attention that I received. May God bless and keep you throughout the years to come. Rev. Mariann+ The Reverend Joseph M. Rushton has accepted the call of the Vestry and Wardens to become the Rector at St. Paul s Church Georgetown, Delaware. He will accept the responsibility as Rector on November 1, Joe comes to the Diocese of Delaware from the Diocese of Maryland where he most recently served as Interim Rector for two parishes in the greater Towson area of Baltimore County Maryland. Joe is a native of Maryland. Following a 19 year career as a clinical social worker in the mental health field, he studied at Virginia Theological Seminary in preparation to be received as a priest in the Episcopal Church. Prior to his social work career, Joe served as a deacon and priest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, serving parishes within Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties of Maryland. Joe was born and raised in Baltimore County and currently lives in Severna Park with Nick Codd, his partner of over 24 years and their three year old rescue dog, Evan. Nick and Evan are members of St. Martin sin- the-field parish in Severna Park, Maryland. ELECTION OF VESTRY MEMBERS By Deby Daly St. Paul s annual meeting will take place on Sunday, January 29 following the 10:30 worship. A luncheon will be held, reports made and new Vestry members will be elected by the Mathias method. There will be FOUR openings this year, with one being for a one-year term. Dawn Bramble was the alternate selection for Fred Seth. Due to family matters, Dawn resigned from the Vestry in September. We need someone to complete that term. In addition, three other members will be going off of the Vestry. If you feel so called, or have possible interest in becoming part of this important ministry of St. Paul s, please talk to a Vestry member or Father Joe. They can let you know what is involved and discuss any thoughts or concerns you may have.
2 TRUST IN THE LORD AND HE WILL PROVIDE... By Russ Henk, Senior Warden We at St. Paul s have witnessed the truth of these words in the past year. Fr. Larry Hofer gave us spiritual guidance and stability during the weeks of September and October He was the right person in our time of need. We were blessed with the appearance of Mariann Babnis as our interim rector beginning in November We knew she was the right person at the right time when she joyfully jumped right in and helped with our Fair Trade Festival. She has been instrumental in holding us together as we conducted our capital campaign, EMC (every member canvass), the renovation of the stained glass windows, the bell tower and our search for a fulltime rector. Your search committee worked tirelessly for nine months and their dedication has proven successful. Father Joe Rushton has been approved by the committee, the Vestry and Bishop Wright to be our rector. We believe he is the right person to provide continued leadership for St. Paul s and our future. His first service will be on November 6, I invite all of you to attend the luncheon November 6 after the 10:30 service to welcome Joe as a new member of St. Paul s family. God Bless, Russ Henk, Senior Warden HOSPITALITY DATES TO REMEMBER November 6: Welcome Luncheon for Fr. Joe Rushton November 13: Bishop Wright visits St. Paul s - luncheon follows service November 18-19: Fair Trade Festival THANK YOU HOSPITALITY VOLUNTEERS Volunteers! You are so special! You are the backbone of St. Paul s. And fortunately, you are also great cooks and providers of weekly coffee hour goodies. We gather in conversation and friendship thanks to your efforts. In times of sorrow, you volunteer to provide hospitality for family members and friends. In times of joy, you provide food, games and laughter for the family of St. Paul s and visitors. Your support of Parish Night Out, coffee hours, picnics, funeral receptions, and luncheons is gratefully appreciated!! ----Hospitality Committee If you would like to be added to the St. Paul s prayer concerns chain, please let Judy Dean know. You can either let her know in person or contact her by at: judy@deanteamsells.com BOOK CLUB November Major Pettigrew s Last Stand by Helen Simonson December Save Me by Lisa Scottoline The book club meets every third Tuesday at noon in the library. Everyone is welcome. MEMORIAM VIOLET T. RICHARDSON Violet passed way on Wednesday, September 28 at the age of 87. She was the longest active member of St. Paul s Episcopal Church. A driving force in her family, community and church, Violet gave selflessly of her time and talents. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, a sister and two brothers. She is survived by her children, Jo Dryden, Ann Bradley and Richard Buster Richardson, 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren and her sister, Ann. Violet retired from the Selective Service System and had served as President of the Georgetown Home Demonstration Club, NARFE and the Georgetown Historical Society. She also served as secretary of the Georgetown PTA. She served as President of the Episcopal Church Women and was Directress of the St. Agnes Altar Guild at St. Paul s. She was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Vestry and belonged to many bridge clubs. Violet was renowned for her blueberry pies and coconut cakes. Donations in Violet s memory can be made to St. Paul s or Delaware Hospice at 100 Patriots Way, Milford, Delaware
3 FOOD PANTRY By Janet Jones Distant Neighbors FAIR TRADE FESTIVAL By Karen Swartout At first the festival seemed so far away and now, in a blink of an eye, it is upon us! In either the December or January newsletters, I will be writing about what a success it was. In the meantime, there is a lot to be done and we need a lot of volunteers. Please remember that St. Paul s is still collecting food for the local food pantry, as well as breakfast and lunch items for First Steps Primeros Pasos. There is an emphasis on meat products for the food pantry. Please place your non-perishable food items in the basket by the baptismal font. Your food donations are not limited to the first Sunday of the month, however. Bring them at any time and they will be distributed throughout the month. Hunger knows no season. Capital Funding Update By Debi Goebel St. Paul s is awesome! Not only did we meet our $10,000 Capital Funding goal for this year, we surpassed it by $424! I have to admit I lost a little sleep over whether we would be able to meet our obligation this year, but together we made it happen! Now to catch up on a little shut eye so I can gear up for our final round! We ve got one more year to go to wipe out our debt and keep St. Paul s financially sound in this uncertain economy. I know we can do it. Let s all make a special effort to remember our Capital Funding pledges in the coming year. YELL! Young Episcopal Leaders & Learners By Debi Goebel Our YELL! Bible Workshops have met with great success judging from the difficulty we have getting the dozen or so kids to go home at the end of the evening! These workshops offer our children an opportunity for Christian formation and fellowship. We eat pizza, explore the bible, sing, play games, work on fun projects and come together to worship. Kids 6 through high school are welcome. YELL! Upcoming events: Saturday, November 12: 5:00-8:30 - YELL! Bible Workshop. Please note this is the second Saturday of the month due to the Distant Neighbors Festival. We will return to the third Saturday of the month in December. This month we will continue with the story of Exodus. Dinner will be provided, so please let Chris Bennett know if your child/grandchild will be attending. Volunteers are needed during the first week in November to unpack the items that will be for sale and inventory them. This will be done at my house. On Saturday or Sunday, November 12 and/or 13, volunteers are needed to move the boxes of supplies to the church. Anyone with a pick-up truck would be great, but we ll take any transportation we can get. Monday through Thursday, November 14 17, volunteers will be needed to unpack the boxes and set up the displays. On Friday, November 18, we need sellers and cashiers from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The last hour will be used to straighten up things and fix the displays. On Saturday, November 19, we need sellers and cashiers from 9 to 3 and a clean-up crew after that. All the unsold consignment goods will need to be packed into their original boxes so we can send them back. On Sunday, November 20, we need workers to pack up and store the rest of the unsold items. In the past, this was done by a few people when many were needed. There will be a volunteer sign-up sheet in the parish hall or you can just call the office and tell Deby what days/hours/positions you will be able to work. As in the past, there are more jobs than we have people, so please don t hesitate to do a few different things. The Fair Trade Festival needs: Patrons - put your slip and donation in the offertory plate. Donations to the merchants raffle basket. Please give them to Maureen Leary or leave them in the office. Parishioners who will sell raffle tickets People putting up flyers you can get them from my mailbox in the church office. Volunteers, Volunteers, Volunteers Our Fair Trade Festival benefits the farmers and artisans in emerging countries by giving them a fair price for their hard work and goods. Saturday, November 19: YELL! will be represented at Parish Life Day this year! If your child/grandchild would like to help out on that day, please contact Debi Goebel for more details.
