Holy Days Same as Sundays (7:30am, 9:30am & 11:30am) Holy Day Vigil 7:00pm Litanies After the 8:30am Mass For Reflection: Faith is a path of illumination; it starts from the humility of acknowledging one's need of salvation and arrives at the personal encounter with Christ, who calls [one] to follow him on the way of love. The first reading, from the book of the Prophet Jeremiah, "Behold I will bring them back from the land of the north; I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst, the mothers and those with child; they shall return as an immense throng." Today's reading talks about the restoration of Israel and the new exodus. The second reading, from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek." Paul develops the figure of Melchisedech as a type of Christ, the eternal High Priest of the New Covenant. Unlike the Levitical priests, Melchisedech is given no genealogy in Scripture. Paul sees in this fact the intention of the Holy Spirit to prefigure Christ's eternal priesthood. We read in this Sunday's Gospel that, while the Lord passes through the streets of Jericho, a blind man named Bartimaeus addresses him, crying out loudly: "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" This entreaty moves Christ's heart, who pauses, has him called and cures him. The decisive moment was the personal, direct encounter between the Lord and that man who was suffering. They are before one another -- God with his will to cure and the man with his desire to be cured. Two liberties, two converging wills, "What do you want me to do for you?" the Lord asks him. "Let me receive my sight," replies the blind man. "Go your way; your faith has made you well." With these words, the miracle is realized -- God's joy, man's joy. And Bartimaeus, who had recovered his sight recounts the Gospel "followed him on the way": That is, he becomes his disciple and goes up with the Master to Jerusalem to take part with him in the great mystery of salvation. In the essential of its passages, this account evokes the itinerary of the catechumen toward the sacrament of baptism, which in the early Church was also called "lllumination."

Pope Francis Intention for November Universal In Service of Peace Priesthood Sunday Priesthood Sunday, October 28, 2018, is a special day set aside to honor priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus issues an invitation to two fishermen, Peter and Andrew, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. No day is the same. Each day is different with its own challenges and opportunities. From visiting the sick, playing kickball with the school kids, to celebrating Sunday mass. It is exciting life. It is never dull. We offer thanks and special prayers to Father Chris, Father Richard and Father Mark. That the language of love and dialogue may always prevail over the language of conflict.

5 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time All Saints Day November 1st Holy Day of Obligation The Solemnity of All Saints is celebrated on November 1. It is a solemnity, a holyday of obligation and the day that the Church honors all of God's saints, even those who have not been canonized by the Church. It is a family day of celebration we celebrate the memory of those family members (sharing with us in the Mystical Body, the doctrine of the Communion of Saints) now sharing eternal happiness in the presence of God. We rejoice that they have reached their eternal goal and ask their prayers on our behalf so that we, too, may join them in heaven and praise God through all eternity. The honoring of all Christian martyrs of the Faith was originally celebrated on May 13, the date established by the fourth century. Pope Boniface IV in 615 established it as the "Feast of All Martyrs" commemorating the dedication of the Pantheon, an ancient Roman temple, into a Christian church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the martyrs. By 741, the feast included not only martyrs, but all the saints in heaven as well, with the title changing to "Feast of All Saints" by 840. In 844, Pope Gregory IV transferred the feast to November 1st, timing it around the harvests to be able to provide food for the pilgrims. Some scholars believe this was to substitute a feast for the pagan celebrations during that time of year. Pope Sixtus IV in 1484 established November 1 as a holyday of obligation and gave it both a vigil (known today as "All Hallows' Eve" or "Hallowe'en") and an eight-day period or octave to celebrate the feast. This feast is marked with liturgical observances that have changed over the centuries. By 1955, the octave and vigil of All Saints were abrogated. Instead of a separate vigil on the calendar, the celebration begins the evening before, as mentioned in The General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar: Solemnities are counted as the principal days in the calendar and their observance begins with evening prayer of the preceding day. Some also have their own vigil Mass for use when Mass is celebrated in the evening of the preceding day. The Church designates November 2 as the Feast of All Souls, a day to pray for all the departed souls in Purgatory. The feasts of All Saints and All Souls fall back-to-back to express the Christian belief of the "Communion of Saints." The Communion of Saints is the union of all the faithful on earth (the Church Militant), the saints in Heaven (the Church Triumphant) and the Poor Souls in Purgatory (the Church Suffering), with Christ as the Head. They are bound together by a supernatural bond. The Church Militant (those on earth still engaged in the struggle to save their souls) can venerate the Church Triumphant, and the saints can intercede with God for those still on earth. Both the faithful on earth and the saints in heaven can pray for the souls in Purgatory. During these two days we see the Communion of Saints really in action! All Saint s Day Masses are at 07:30 09:30 11:30 AM Vigil mass on Wednesday 10/31 at 7PM O God, Lord of mercies, grant to the souls of Your servants and handmaids, the place of refreshment, the bliss of eternal rest and the splendor of Your Light. All Soul s Day November 2nd Friday, Nov. 2nd is All Souls Day. We remember all of our deceased from this past year with a special Mass at 7 PM and lighting of candles in their names. Then the Knights of Columbus will remember their deceased. After this, anyone who would like to light a candle for their deceased loved ones may do so. So Is It Okay for Catholics to Celebrate Halloween? Sure! There s nothing wrong with putting on a costume, trick-or-treating, and enjoying the company of your friends and family. Of course, some misled people take the holiday too far and make it more satanic than it should be. However, that s not a reason for the rest of us Christians to be scared away. When we decide to be afraid of the devil we give our power over to him. What message does it send the world if we, as Christians, are afraid to admit to the reality of evil? It sends the message that we re not sure who wins this battle of good vs. evil. But we are! We KNOW that God wins that love triumphs over death, and that evil has no hold on us. Partaking in this holiday does not mean you re opening yourself up to evil. I think that on the contrary, it means you re claiming as your own the victory of Christ on the cross. How much more Christian can you get?

6 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Hebrews 5:1-6 Your Vocation God has chosen you. You may not always feel it. You may at times feel as though you re in the wrong place, the wrong job, or the wrong century. But God has chosen to create you here and now. God has given you gifts to face the present and to prepare for the glory of the future. We often speak of vocations in terms of religious life. Truly, God chooses some people for special ministry. The Letter to the Hebrews speaks about the vocation of Old Testament priesthood as well as the priesthood of Jesus. Every high priest is taken from among men, the letter says. It does not say, Certain men decide to become high priests. Rather, No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. Even Jesus did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest. Instead, God had him in mind with two prophecies from the Book of Psalms: You are my son: this day I have begotten you; and You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. It is often easier to see a vocation among religious men and women because their work is totally dedicated to God. But others also have a vocation in the family, at work, and in society. God has chosen you. God has taken you from among others and placed you in the world now to proclaim the nearness of glory. Written by Paul Turner.
