Holy Days Same as Sundays (7:30am, 9:30am & 11:30am) Holy Day Vigil 7:00pm Readings for the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 3, 2019 First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-5, The word of the Lod comes to Jerimiah Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:31 The greatest of these is love. Gospel: Luke 4:21-30 The people rise up to dive Jesus out of their town. For Reflection: Am I conscious of Jesus presence in our midst? How do I show others that I am part of the Body of Christ? Today s good news The first reading is taken from the Book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah and Ezra lived in the time when the people of Israel had been returned to their land after the years of the Babylonian Captivity and it was a time of rebuilding. The people had lost their connections to their faith. The second reading is from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians and refers to the Mystical Body of Christ. St. Paul concludes his description of the different parts of the body by applying it to the Church, where variety of functions does not detract from unity. The Gospel is from St. Luke. In the first four verses of St. Luke's Gospel which have been read to you today, you will find reason to be grateful to him. He went to a lot of trouble in order to put in a permanent form, in a written record, the essential facts concerning Christ, his words and his works, so that we "would understand (like Theophilus) the certainty of the faith in which we have been instructed." But God in his wisdom provided for the many generations to come who would not have this evident confirmation of their faith. He established a teaching body in his Church which would safeguard the purity of the Christian truths, for "he himself would be with it all days," and he gave us a written record of the facts of the faith in the Gospels and the ether writings of the New Testament. We have a priceless gift of God in the inspired Books of the Bible. Let us show true appreciation for that gift by using it to build up a better knowledge of the Christian faith which it teaches us. There should be a Bible, or at least the New Testament, in every Christian home. It should not be an ornament on a shelf, but a fountain and source from which we can draw strength and refreshment in the daily practice of our Christian faith. Almost two thousand years ago, God's infinite goodness provided this source of strength, the "fountain of living water," for us Christians of this century. Are we grateful for his thoughtfulness? Are we nourishing our faith at this blessed fountain of his infinite wisdom and love?

How would parishioners define the Body of Christ? Is it just a beautiful image or a living reality? Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Eucharistic Adoration January 31, 2019 February 2nd Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation of the Lord which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing and procession of candles is included in today's liturgy. According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is referred to as the "Purification of Mary." This is known as a "Christmas feast" since it points back to the Solemnity of Christmas. Many Catholics practice the tradition of keeping out the Nativity creche or other Christmas decorations until this feast. We will have an all day Eucharistic Adoration today from 10am to 6:00pm in the Chapel. Please come and not leave our Lord in the Eucharist unattended during this time. There will be the Spanish Holy Hour and Exposition from 6 7:15 PM with week and all are invited. If anyone would like to sign up for an hour, please call or Ricardo Peggyricardo77@gmail.com. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for this intention each month. Please look for the group in the back of the church. Feast of St Blaise February 3rd Saint Blaise was the bishop of Sebastea and a doctor. The first known record of the saint's life comes from the medical writings of Aëtius Amidenus, where he is recorded as helping with patients suffering from objects stuck in their throat. Many of the miraculous aspects of St. Blaise's life are written of 400 years after his martyrdom in the "Acts of St. Blaise." Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer. People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles. In 316, the governor of Cappadocia and of Lesser Armenia, Agricola, arrested then-bishop Blaise for being a Christian. On their way to the jail, a woman set her only son, who was chocking to death on a fish bone, at his feet. Blaise cured the child, and though Agricola was amazed, he could not get Blaise to renounce his faith. Therefore, Agricola beat Blaise with a stick and tore at his flesh with iron combs before beheading him. In another tale, Blaise was being led to the prison in Sebastea, and on the way came across a poor old woman whose pig had been stolen by a wolf. Blaise commanded the wolf return the pig, which it did -alive and uninjured - to the amazement of all. When he reached Sebastea, the woman came to him and brought two fine wax candles in an attempt to dispel the gloom of his darkened cell. In the Middle Ages, Blaise became quite popular and his legend as a beast tamer spread. He was then referred to as the "saint of the wild beast." Many German churches are dedicated to Saint Blaise, sometimes called Saint Blasius. In Great Britain, the village of St. Blazey got its name from Saint Blaise, and a church dedicated to the saint can be found in Decon hamlet of Haccombe, near Newton Abbot. There is a Saint Blaise's Well in Kent, and the water is believed to have medicinal properties. A Blessing of the Throats ceremony is held every February 3 at Saint Etheldreda's Church in London and Balve, Germany. A Catholic middle school was named after Saint Blaise in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The name was decided upon when the link between Bradford and the woolen industry was connected to the way St. Blaise was martyred: with woolcomb. Saint Blaise is often depicted holding two crossed candles in his hand, or in a cave with wild animals. He is also often shown with steel combs. The similarity of the steel combs and the wool combs made a large contribution to Saint Blaise's leadership as the patron saint of wool combers and the wool trade. We will have the blessing of throats for the Feast of St. Blaise on Saturday and Sunday, February 2nd & 3rd after all the Masses.

5 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas January 28th St. Thomas Aquinas is the Dominican order's greatest glory. He taught philosophy and theology with such genius that he is considered one of the leading Christian thinkers. His innocence, on a par with his genius, earned for him the title of "Angelic Doctor." St. Thomas ranks among the greatest writers and theologians of all time. His most important work, the Summa Theologiae, an explanation and summary of the entire body of Catholic teaching, has been standard for centuries, even to our own day. At the Council of Trent it was consulted after the Bible. To a deeply speculative mind, he joined a remarkable life of prayer, a precious memento of which has been left to us in the Office of Corpus Christi. Reputed as great already in life, he nevertheless remained modest, a perfect model of childlike simplicity and goodness. He was mild in word and kind in deed. He believed everyone was as innocent as he himself was. When someone sinned through weakness, Thomas bemoaned the sin as if it were his own. The goodness of his heart shone in his face, no one could look upon him and remain disconsolate. How he suffered with the poor and the needy was most inspiring. Whatever clothing or other items he could give away, he gladly did. He kept nothing superfluous in his efforts to alleviate the needs of others. After he died his lifelong companion and confessor testified, "I have always known him to be as innocent as a five-year-old child. Never did a carnal temptation soil his soul, never did he consent to a mortal sin." He cherished a most tender devotion to St. Agnes, constantly carrying relics of this virgin martyr on his person. He died in 1274, at the age of fifty, in the abbey of Fossa Nuova. He is the patron saint of schools and of sacred theology. Patron: Academics; against storms; against lightning; Catholic academies; Catholic schools; Catholic universities. Copies of Beautiful Hope are Still Available Please make sure you have taken a copy but then take the time for a quick chapter. Each chapter is titled with something that may interest you. There are many quotes of secular and religious experts. One quote from St John Paul II : I plead with you never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged. Each chapter ends with a focus and a reflection that can help to sum up the information. When is Easter 2019 and How is the Date Decided? Passed a group talking about the stores and how quickly they replaced Christmas merchandise with Valentine s Day and Easter items and candy. The discussion led to why is Easter so late this year? Since most of us have barely taken down the tree and put all our treasures away, thinking about Easter is strange. First of all, we are safe! Valentine s Day is NOT on Ash Wednesday ( Wednesday, March 6th )and St.Patrick s Day (Sunday, March 17th), are NOT on a Friday in Lent. In 2019 Easter falls on Sunday, April 21. Good Friday is, therefore, April 19, and the Easter Monday bank holiday is on April 22. The date is decided by a complex set of calculations based on observations of the moon. Visit or call toll free In early Christianity, different churches used different methods, leading to disagreements which remain unresolved centuries later. Eastern and Western churches continue to celebrate Easter according to different calendars, although sometimes by chance the festivals coincide. Easter celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus, which the Bible says happened around the Jewish festival, Passover. Passover typically begins on the night of the first full moon after the spring equinox, except in "leap months" when it is the second full moon, as in As the actual full moon can vary in each time zone, the Church instead calculates Easter from the 14th day of the ecclesiastic lunar month, known as the paschal full moon. Easter Day is the Sunday that follows the paschal full moon falling on or after the equinox and is therefore between one and seven days later. So take a deep breathe and take the time to reflect on our recent joy of Christ s birth!

6 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 Body Block It is hard for some people to get along. We think the worst of strangers in our way. We get tired of people we work with every day. Kids in the family fight with one another. It is hard to get along. There are many reasons to work at it, though. Fighting creates tensions we do not need. It puts us on edge and violates the interior harmony we seek. Work gets done more smoothly, learning happens more peacefully, love is shared more fully, when people get along. Paul tells the Corinthians that they should think of themselves as one body, not as different people. Earlier on in this letter, he already complained about the divisions in their church. The one community was splintering as people took sides under different natural leaders. They intuited that they were one community, but they lived as though they were many who were not getting along. Paul urged them to think of themselves as one. The body is not a single part, but many. The foot and the hand get along. So do the ear and the eye. They do not compete with each other. They do not claim to be the only part in the entire body. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy. It is easier to get along when we start from this premise: We are already one. Written by Paul Turner. Copyright 2009, Resource Publications, Inc., , All rights reserved.
