Special blue offering envelopes for St. Luke are provided in the pew racks. Pastor s Pen March 5 is Ash Wednesday. Those who hold services on this day are familiar with the rite of signing the cross on the foreheads of the worshipers with a paste of ashes sometimes obtained by burning last year's palm branches from Palm Sunday. The expression "ashes to ashes" is part of our burial rite in the Christian tradition. So, the ashes imposed on Ash Wednesday remind us of our own mortality of the need to live our short lives under the protection of the cross of Jesus Christ. However, we can only take up the cross follow Christ through true repentance, which in Greek means literally "after mind." It is a change of mind, a change of direction. Repentance is our constant drive to take a new direction in life under the h of God. Yet, it is not simply an individual act. No, it takes place in the context of the Christian community. We pursue repentant living as we dialogue with the Bible, theology, other Christians. This is why I urge every Christian to take part, not just in worship, but in the study programs of our church. There is no Christian who does not need to grow, to take new directions, no matter how right one thinks one is. We will begin with a soup bread supper followed by worship the imposition of ashes. If you can provide soup or bread, please indicate so on the sign-up sheet in the narthex on Sunday, March 2. Please tell us what kind of soup you plan to bring. You should have your soup here by 6:15p on March 5.

2 Presbytalk March Mission Trip Scheduled Mark Your Calendars! This year s mission trip will be in Summerlee, WV from July A sign-up sheet is in the narthex to express your interest. You may also contact the church office ( ) or admin@frontroyalpres.org. A meeting of interested persons will be held soon. Tattoo Anyone??? The Christian Fellowship Committee says LET S THINK SPRING! Have you been to Edinburg, Scotl? Were you there at a time when you could see their famous Tattoo? Well, now you can see it in our own state! It will bring people from all over the world to Norfolk during their Azalea Festival in April. We are planning a one-day trip on April 27. We shall have a tram tour of the gardens, dinner, see the Tattoo come home. The cost is $120 due by March 10. If you ve looked at your calendar, you see that this is a Sunday. That is the only day there is a matinee. By going to a matinee we save the cost of a hotel room breakfast. Of course, this means that we can t leave our cars in the church parking lot. We have permission to use the Martin s parking lot but opposite Martin s just off South Street in front of the BB&T bank. See the flyer sign up in the Narthex. Talk to Tom Rhyne who has seen the Tattoo twice, or go on the internet Blood Pressure Screening On March 23 after worship you may have your blood pressure checked for free in Room 101. South Warren Ruritan Club Spaghetti Dinner Rick Andra Logan are selling tickets to the South Warren Ruritan Club spaghetti dinner on April 12, 2014 at Skyline High School from 4-7 pm. Adult tickets are $8 in advance $10 at the door. Children tickets for ages 6-12 are $5 children under 6 are free. All proceeds will go toward a $1500 scholarship for a Skyline High School senior a $1500 scholarship for a Warren County High School senior. Please support this very worthy endeavor. The organization that was going to serve this date was unable to serve. Visit from Transitional Presbyter On March 9 the Rev. Roy Martin, who is the new Transitional Presbyter of Shenoah Presbytery, will be speaking during worship bringing greetings from the 100+ churches chapels in our Presbytery. Fellowship Luncheon On March 9 after worship join us in the Fellowship Hall for the monthly Fellowship Luncheon. Sign-up sheet is in the narthex. Bring a dish to share; entrée is barbeque chicken. The Witness Service Committee is in charge. Welch Community Garden The first build day of 2014: Saturday, March 1, 11a. We will build two new beds for the coming growing season plant them with lettuce peas. Lunch will be provided. Please bring power drills, hammers, work gloves, screwdrivers enthusiasm! 4 Presbytalk March Vacation Bible School The date for our joint Vacation Bible School with Calvary Episcopal Church is July We will host the VBS this year, so please mark your calendars. Building Emphasis Sunday The first Sunday of each month is Building Emphasis Sunday when we remember that our buildings grow old need constant maintenance improvement. We invite you to add something extra with your offering. Presbyterian Women will meet on Tuesday, March 4 in Room 105 at 2p. Congratulations! On January 28, Maya, Andrew Fletcher Ernest welcomed son brother Cormac Ward. Proud grparents are Judy. Offerings for 4 -a-meal C-CAP Donations are on the second Sunday of each month C-CAP needs grocery items as well as monetary donations. There is a basket for items in the Narthex. Our condolences to the family of Hal J. Meredith, Jr. who died on February 18. A memorial service was held on Sunday, February 23 at FRPC where he was a member for 59 years. A Bottle in Every Pocket I have seen some people that seem crazed about using h sanitizers. They use them after anything they touch; computer keyboards, door knobs, phones desk. Then there are others who don t wash their hs after using the public restroom. This time of year we become concerned about catching a cold or flu virus when out in public places. So do we replace soap water h washing for the gels foams? First we must look at what is in them. Pick up a few in your household see if they contain 60% or greater ethyl alcohol. Anything less will not kill bacteria actually may lead to developing resistant bacteria. A main concern is for the antibacterial agent triclosan. It is in 76% of antibacterial washes the trademark is microban. There has been no proof in studies that it has any benefits. The FDA is reviewing studies that demonstrate it may be toxic to humans. It can: amplify testosterone Reduce muscle strength is a very strong cardiac muscle depressant. Harm the immune system- allergies Block thyroid function Cause endocrine dysfunction leading to childhood obesity type 2 diabetes Benzalkonian Choloride kills bacteria but can increase skin irritation aggravate your allergies. Phalates are used as a fragrance additive. They may not be good to have on your hs before you eat as they leach into your skin body. The CDC has shown in a study 20 times more phalate metabolites in the body. These can lead to hormonal problems have been found to cause breast cancer in women. How often do we use them how do we use them? A child s immunity is seriously affected by the use of these gels foams can lead to inflammatory responses later in life. CDC guidelines recommend rubbing the gel or foam all over our hs (nails) until dry. If your hs are dry within seconds then you haven t used enough. They don t work on grimy, dirty hs. They just mix in with the grime. Remember children put things in their mouths so don t let them use it on their own. So do they kill 99.9% of bacteria as stated? We spend $175M a year on them. Perhaps we should just teach our children ( ourselves) to wash our hs with soap water before eating or preparing food. Remember to sing Happy Birthday while washing your hs; it takes 24 seconds which is the guideline time for h washing. Oh yes, dry your hs. Cathy Pinch, Parish Nurse
