Assistant admin@frontroyalpres.org Church (540) Fax (540) It s July, and for me that means lee and Camp. It means hard work and meaningful and lasting relationships. It means I, along with many of you, have the opportunity to live out Matthew s words printed above. It also means that at times, it might seem as if everybody isn t needed, that your gifts aren t necessary. THAT IS NEVER TRUE. The one true and good thing about mission trips and summer camps, is that oftentimes we come back changed in ways we never imagined, if only we let ourselves get a little dirty. Getting dirty means not just watching kids eat, but sitting down next to them and engaging in conversation. Getting dirty means even though there are enough volunteers, you play tag and hide and seek and run around and have fun. Getting dirty means not standing and watching kids read, but getting down on the floor and helping them sound out words. Getting dirty means not just painting a room but changing a life by sharing in stories. Getting dirty means sitting down on a broken and run down porch and sharing a bottle of water. Getting dirty means not being first in line, not parking closest to the door, not putting yourself first, not rushing through the day but slowly and intentionally stopping to say hello and waiting for a response. So you see, it isn t just those going to West Virginia and it isn t just those welcoming at risk kids into our doors for summer camp. It s each and every one of us that is called to live out Matthew s words and it s easier than you think. Especially when you remember those wonderful words and, lo, I am with you always. 2 Offerings for C-CAP and 4 -a- Meal Donations are on the second Sunday of each month. The 4 -a- Meal Offering provides funds for Presbyterian hunger programs nationally and internationally. If you wish to have part of your offering go to C-CAP or some other local hunger program, please put those funds in a C-CAP envelope, or write a check, designate your offering to C-CAP or other hunger program in the memo line of the check. C-CAP needs grocery items as well as monetary donations. Stewardship of Time and Talents Average Attendance through June 24: Sunday School: 15 : 67 Holy Holy will be celebrated Sunday, July 1 during the morning worship service. June/July Birthdays June/July birthdays will be celebrated on Sunday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the Sunday School hallway. Book Group Book Group will meet August 28 at 6:00 PM in Pastor s Carrie s Study. The book this month will be Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese. In October, Pastor Carrie will be traveling with the Shenandoah Presbytery to Ethiopia as an ambassador to our sister Presbytery and sister churches. The book is about two twin brothers that come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Music News Since summer provides a bit of a break for many performing ensembles and Independence Day is right around the corner, I'd like to take a few moments to discuss the history of our national anthem, which, contrary to the assertion of some, does mention God (in verse 4). Most people know that Francis Scott Key wrote The Star-Spangled Banner after a battle in Baltimore harbor in September of It is less well-known that he witnessed this event from a truce boat after obtaining President Madison's permission to act as part of a delegation seeking to negotiate the release of Dr. William Beanes, a popular, elderly physician and personal friend of Key's who had been taken prisoner. As long as the shore fortification answered the attack, Key and his party knew all was well, but toward morning that volley seemed to cease. As the sun rose over the harbor, Key rejoiced to see the flag, known as the "Star-Spangled Banner," with 15 stars and 15 stripes, still flying. Ironically, the tune was probably written by John Stafford Smith for a men's social club in London. May God grant us peace with all current enemies as He has with our British friends! The Star-Spangled Banner O say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 3 Oberammergau 2020 Passion Play Travel to the picturesque village of Oberammergau, Germany to witness a performance of the epic Passion Play. The original performance dates back to If anyone is interested in going, please contact Ana Larson at Cruises Travel and Tours , so she can determine how many will be going and set up a tour package. There is a sign-up sheet on the Narthex table.! This summer Vacation Bible School will look VERY different. We are calling it and instead of a week of Bible stories for our own kids, we are reaching out to have a week of summer fun, learning, play and nutrition for our Backpack Buddies kids. The week of July 23-27, from 9-12:30, the Front Royal Presbyterian Church and Calvary Episcopal Church are calling all volunteers to help make a difference in the life of a child. There s something for everyone. Come listen to a child read Come feed the kids breakfast or lunch Come teach a new skill Come play games on the lawn Come play math games like UNO There truly is something for everyone and we will need all hands on deck. The summer camp will be like no other! Business sponsors are also needed. If your business would like to sponsor our Camp for area at risk kids, please see Pastor Carrie. Your business name will be on the back of the t-shirts and in all area announcements. This is the first of its kind for Front Royal kids let s make it a good one. Sunday School For seven weeks during the summer, which began June 17, Sunday School hour will meet in the Chapel for an intergenerational event. The theme will be Creation and you ll have the opportunity to not only study the Word, but also meet in small groups and put the Word into action. Opening exercises will begin at 9:45 and will include music and the theme for the day. Following opening exercises, Pastor Carrie will have a brief time of conversational teaching that will lead into small group time. Ages are invited, there will be something for everyone! BOWLING WITH THE YOUTH and Pastor Carrie July 20 Meet at the church at 11:30 AM, lunch and bowling fun. Bring money for lunch and snacks; bowling is on us. We have reserved lanes this time! Psalm 107:9 One box of quinoa and wild rice with seasoning prepare according to box instructions. One cucumber - diced Two tomatoes - diced One bunch cilantro chopped small One green pepper - diced One bunch of green onions, chopped small Two avocados Cocktail shrimp if desired 2 limes Splash of apple cider vinegar Salt and pepper After quinoa is prepared, cool and add the above ingredients. Cut the limes and squeeze the lime juice over the salad. Chill and enjoy! 3

6 FRONT ROY AL PRESBYTERI AN CHURCH 115 LURAY AVENUE FRONT ROYAL, VA CHANGE SERVICE REQUESTED The HVAC Needs Our Help! As you may know, our church has replaced the failing air conditioning system for the Sanctuary. The system that we replaced is one that dates back to the 1960 s and has been less than dependable for the last few years. Fixing the existing unit was no longer a viable option and so the decision to replace it was made. Work cost the church $39, and $30,000 came out of the church s Manse account. In order to replace these essential funds, we are kicking off a fund-raising drive to replace the $30, and return our Manse account to its full capacity. If you would like to contribute to this fund-raising drive, make your check payable to the Front Royal Presbyterian Church and in the memo section, write Manse account or you can mark it on your offering envelope. Any amount will be greatly appreciated and may God bless you for your offerings. This fundraising will continue for the next few months or until the funds are replaced. To keep you apprised of how the fund-raiser is going, the amount of funds collected so far for the Manse account is $5, Thank you to those who have helped with this cause. Donna Jordon is married to Rev. Mark Jordon. She was born in Mississippi and writes poetry, loves to read and play bridge. They have been attending FRPC regularly for 2 years and she has also joined the choir. Betty Powers comes to us from Manassas St. Thomas United Methodist Church. She moved to Front Royal in She has a son, daughter, and granddaughter and works at Samuels Public Library. Please introduce yourselves and make these new members feel welcome. 6
