For this reason: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Hence, on those days they should eat only one full meal. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be consumed at other times during those two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one s 59th birthday. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed minimal penitential practices. PARISH STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE We are truly grateful for your sacriice and generosity. Weekly Stewardship Received February 15, 2015 $ Children s Stewardship February 15, 2015 $ Stewardship received ElectronicallyJan 2015 $ 11, Mortgage Update Monthly Mortgage Payment $ 23, Current Mortgage as of 1 Loan on Rooftop Units God bless you and your families. $ 110, Did you know the Historical Background of the Bell Tower? The Bell Tower at the west entrance of church was rebuilt with stones from the base of the former tower. The three bells that hang in the tower have called St. Paul people to worship for many years. One of the bells, from the irst St. Paul Church in the Depot, is named in memory of Patrick Cassidy. The other two are named for St Paul and St Joseph. So our bells are named in honor of three great saints who were called by God as we are, to bring Christ to the world. 2

4 ST PAUL SCHOOL NEWS Last Sunday we began the season of Lent. Lent is an amazing season. It is a season where we look at our hearts to see if there is something Jesus wants us to let go of so we can be more fully the best version of our selves. When we give something up, it can be really hard. In those moments of dificulty, we ask Jesus to help us even more. Sometimes we make a point to do something new like start a new habit of praying every morning before the day begins. This is also very hard to do. It still requires that we put someone else, Jesus, before ourselves. That can be really hard to do. When we ind it especially dificult, we ask Jesus for help. So what are you doing for Lent? Even if you have not started, you can start now. It is never too late to return to Jesus with your whole heart Numbers are really important in the Bible. The number 40, which is the number associated with Lent, is no exception. Lent is a period of preparation and always has been. Look back to the early Church the period of Lent was used to mark the last 40 days of preparation before an adult could get baptized and become a member of the Church. This process of coming into the Church (which we now call Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA) was a three year endeavor, so marking the last 40 days was signiicant. It was the inal puriication before the grace of Baptism received at Easter. The entire Church began to recognize this importance. Most of us will not be baptized at Easter. So what did the Church see in it for all of us? That, I believe, is the desert. Christ led to the desert for 40 days and it was there Jesus encountered temptation. It is when we enter the desert we begin to see our own weaknesses. It is there we see how very much we need Jesus. If you have not begun your Lent yet, please do so. It is never too late. May you have a blessed and holy Lent. St. Paul s Parish SURF S UP! Get connected to our POWER! ENROLLING NOW 3K, 4K, AND 5K TO GRADE 8 Please contact us at for a school tour if you are interested in enrolling now or for the school year. We may be exactly what you are looking for in a school? JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT in EIGHTH GRADE St. Paul Parishioner, Ed Brady, visits the eighth graders each Thursday as part of the Junior Achievement Program. This volunteer delivered program fosters workreadiness, entrepreneurship and inancial literacy skills, and uses experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential. Ed helps students develop the skills they need to experience the realities and opportunities of work and entrepreneurship in the 21st century global marketplace. This week in Junior Achievement the eighth graders had the opportunity (with the help of teacher Ed Brady) to trade stocks and to try their hands at making the right choices through the game "Be a Success". During this game students needed to make decisions of whether they would want more education or join the work force. Thank you to parishioner Ed Brady for volunteering at St. Paul s to provide this important program. God bless Ed Brady! The Extraordinary Synod drew on responses from a global consultation, as well as from testimonies from married couples from around the world, on the joys and challenges of family life in our times. In the spirit of dialogue, Pope Francis wishes to receive further feedback from Catholics on the outcome of the Extraordinary Synod, to help the Church prepare for the Ordinary Synod on the Family that is scheduled for October 2-25, This Ordinary Synod will consider the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and contemporary world, and will produce specific guidance on the pastoral care of families in our times. Archbishop Listecki invites you to participate in a consultation process in preparation of his report to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops by participating in a survey to share your views on modern-day family life. You are encouraged to read the preparatory document for the context of the questions, which you may access at the archdiocesan website ( The Archbishop asks that you prayerfully consider the prepared questions, and if you are interested in participating, complete the online-consultation on the Archdiocesan website at A short response time has been given to us. In order for the Archdiocese to gather the information and forward it to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, please respond by Sunday, March 1,
