2 FROM YOUR PASTOR S PEN This reflection was one I read on Monday July 11, Along with the readings, especially the first one, we are reminded that God doesn t want empty worship or sacrifices. So, the question I ask is why do I pray, why do I go to Church, why do I do the good that I do? Is it for me; to make me feel better; to fulfill an obligation? Or is it for God, to praise him, to show him to the world? The readings for the day were Isaiah 1:10-17 and Matthew 10:34-11:1. You might want to read them before reading this reflection by Cindy Murphy McMahon from Creighton University (Daily Reflections). Fr. Chuck In today s first reading, God is annoyed really annoyed. The Lord, through Isaiah, is telling the people of that day (and us now) that He s not interested in external show that doesn t represent internal changes of heart and conversion that result in concern for others. It s as if God is saying, Don t give me your empty words, your ritualistic religious practices. I m talking reality here helping those who have been wronged and orphans and widows. Of course there s nothing wrong with religious practices, but if we do them without thinking, or, even worse, as a cover for behavior and thoughts that run counter to the Spirit of God, they are meaningless. In fact, God is not happy at all about that. The Responsorial Psalm echoes the same sentiment: Why do you recite my statutes, and profess my covenant with your mouth, though you hate discipline and cast my words behind you? Why indeed? Why do we do that? We like to fool ourselves and appear holy or perfect, but God can never be fooled. The Spirit knows our hearts and knows why we go to church or Mass or Bible study, and knows that the reasons we ignore our co-worker or neighbor, or don t go out of our way to redress the wronged, are petty and selfish and shortsighted. Our only hope is to throw ourselves upon God s mercy as we remember that what He really wants from us is to make justice our aim. Let us pray: Lord, the next time Your Spirit prompts me to help someone in need or listen to a friend or place another s needs before my own, help me to remember the high priority you place on service and justice. Help them to become my priorities too, so that I may do Your will as much as is humanly possible. Tentative Partial Parking Lot Closures Resurfacing of the School Parking lot and the Hwy 83 lot is scheduled to begin on July 19th, weather permitting. The lots should be open again on July 22nd. The rest of the parking lot will be started on July 26th and opened on July 28th, again weather permitting. Please note these areas will be roped off by the vendor so keep your eyes open for the workers and the closings. Thank you, Sheri Meyer, business manager WELCOME TO ST. PAUL PARISH Whether you are new to the area or just visiting, we welcome you to our parish! Would you like to become a member of St. Paul Parish? You can contact us at or go to our website: HUMAN CONCERNS Pray for Our Parishes In an effort to make prayer for our parishes more intentional for everyone, we have begun a Novena of Holy Hours once a week for 9 weeks. They are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm at alternating parishes. Everyone is welcome to join us whenever you are able. In any event, please continue to pray for our parishes St. Paul and St. Bruno July 20 - St. Bruno 27 - St. Paul REVERSE GIVING COLLECTION Jesus said, Amen, I say to you, whatever you do for one of these least brothers of mine, you do for me. - Mt:25:40 The Loaves and Fishes Ministry thanks everyone for their generous and continuous donations of nonperishable foods and money every month and now hopes your generosity will shine once again. The Kettle Moraine Food Pantry needs your help. To help replenish a dwindling summer food supply, St Paul s will be doing a REVERSE GIVING COLLECTION on Saturday July 23rd and Sunday July 24th. Baskets with food item requests will be distributed before Mass ends. Please take one or more slips of paper. Do your shopping and return with the item(s) on Saturday July 30th or Sunday July 31st. We have done this the past few years and your generosity always shines through. If you are on vacation the weekend of the collection, you may bring your items anytime before or after. (Check expiration dates on food items, expired food cannot be accepted.) Thanks and may God bless all of you. Questions may be directed to Vera Switalski at Much Needed by Food Pantry: Baked beans, canned ravioli, catsup, and mayo. All donations are very much appreciated. 3 $15,000 Grant a Wish possibility for our Parish The Catholic Community Foundation is celebrating their 15 th anniversary by giving parishes an opportunity to win a special $15,000 award. Submit your idea of what our parish could do with the $15,000 award to the parish office BEFORE Thursday, July 28 th. Only one idea can be submitted per parish and it cannot be part of our normal operating budget or current programs. It must be a wish list type of idea so be creative and submit your idea before July 28 th. If you have questions, please contact Rita Borowski through the Parish Office The Elizabeth Ministry is offering free baby angel statues to those in our parish who have lost a baby. These statues will be available in the parish office. Feel free to take one in remembrance of a little life gone too soon. These statues have helped many through their healing process. It has become a common practice during my years of making these, that people will name their baby and write the name under the statue. Whether you lost your baby to miscarriage, stillborn, SIDS, infant death, or abortion, I hope that you will find this to be helpful. May God bless you. Call Cathy Treutelaar if you have questions. Thank you, St. Paul Parish, for giving 75 families 6,000 gallons of drinking water! Miranda and Emily made the water systems. Each system required drilling four holes and testing each system to make sure there wasn t any leakage. It took the team two days to make the 50 systems. 4
