Gary Aprahamian is assessing the situation as Sevan Zobian stares intently wondering how are we going to make this right. These two men have been part of the base that has been there at the Oakland

7 Cemetery for the past eight weeks. We have righted a number of stones so far, Hovaness Krikorian, Paul and Agnes Ladefian and Harry Nahigian. This stone and the Armenian one next to it will need professional help, but in due time, they too will stand proudly with all of the others. There were 8 new people there last Saturday for the "final" work day at the Oakland Cemetery off Broad St. in the other old Armenian section on the Cranston/Providence line: Paula Burke, Der Kapriel Nazarian, Badveli Hagop Manjelikian, Harry Kachadoorian, Alex Saakov and Varky Kaprielian plus others who just stopped by to offer encouragement. One man, Mark Charleson, showed up early and had to take off early because he coaches youth lacrosse for CLCF. He said his grandfather changed the family name years ago. Whatever the case, he was there sweating up a storm, taking care of his family's graves and helping us all out too. He marks the 43rd person who took part in this endeavor. There were 16 workers there today. We walked the grounds and took pictures of all the Armenian stones. There are more than we thought. We pledge to go back there in the spring and the fall to maintain our Armenian section. There were many as young as 18 and some in their 70's. There were women and there were men. They came from all three of our churches and some who said they aren't part of the Armenian community. They are now. We were paid in pizza and soft drinks these past two weeks -- provided to the workers from a generous couple from the community. Thanks to those that have sent us funds for the 500 bags, the cemetery flags, the removal of a pile of branches and brush, the supplies, and the pizza and drinks. A special bond has been formed here. The sign for our Armenian section has been created. Whether you are the descendants of those buried at this RI Historical Cemetery # 3 or not, please pass the word on to all that you know, that the mass blessing will be taking place on June 18th at 9am on these grounds. An updated list of who is buried there will be sent soon. Please mark your calendars for Saturday morning at 9am on June 18th where a mass grave blessing will take place. Incense will fill the air and prayers will be said for every one of them. There will be a reception there immediately after at a home next door to the cemetery. Memorial Day is 2 days away. A time to remember the men and women who lost their lives serving this nation and our own families. Tom Kizirian, president of the Sts. Vartanantz Men's Club and the son of Hazel and his late father Harry, spoke on Saturday as we closed this chapter on the clean up of this old and once abandoned place. He said the following in his remarks. "We are now done with our service here, paying respect to these souls. Let's hope the next generations does the same for us". There were 43 people who gave their time on this project, 16 of them would be considered younger members of our community. Most encouraging. On behalf of the Men's Club of Sts. 8 one of Our Parishioners, Joseph Leylegian, served as the Grand Marshal of the 2016 North providence Memorial Day Parade "Joseph Leylegian, the senior vice commander for Chapter 21 of the Disabled Veterans of America, says he was "very honored" to be chosen to lead this year's Memorial Day Parade as grand marshal. A former teacher in Warwick for 36 years, and substitute teacher in North Providence for another decade before retiring two years ago, Leylegian was in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1947, serving in World War II on the USSE.G. Small. Once the war ended in Europe, he was shipped to Okinawa. He was previously recognized by the DAV Chapter 21 for his dedication in recruiting new members for the chapter. Leylegian is a 1961 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, earning a degree in economics and finance. After deciding to go into education, he went on to get two master's degrees and would later become a reading and math specialist at the elementary level. Leylegian has been married to his wife, Beverly, for 52 years. They have two sons, one an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice and another a veteran Providence teacher who is set to take the bar exam in July. Leylegian has one granddaughter. Leylegian has been in the North providence memorial Day Parade since its inception. He was picked by a majority of the members of the DAV Chapter 21 to be this year's grand marshal. The veteran said he's always tired to be a good citizen of North providence since he moved to the town 50 years ago. 9 GOSPEL Matthew 12: 1-8 Lord of the Sabbath At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath. He answered, Haven t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread - which was not unlawful for them to do, but only for the priests. Or haven t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. (On Page 966 in your Bibles) EPISTLE Romans 6:12-23 Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law, but under grace? By no means! Don t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey - whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at the time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 15 From the June 2nd issue of Crossroads GERMANY APPROVES RESOLUTION The German parliament today approved a resolution recognizing the mass killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turkey during World War I as genocide. The word genocide is used in both the text and headline of the resolution that also states that Germany bears some guilt for its inaction at the time. Following the vote, Turkey recalled its ambassador to Germany for consultations. The vote was nearly unanimous with only one opposed and two abstentions. His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia, immediately sent a letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcoming Germany s brave stand. His Holiness reminded the Chancellor that the Holy See of Cilicia was a victim of the genocide, describing how his predecessor Catholicos Sahag II and the brotherhood of priests were exiled from their historical catholicosal seat in Sis. ST. NERSES THE GREAT AND BISHOP KHAT This Saturday, June 4, the Armenian Church commemorates Catholicos Nerses the Great and Khat the Bishop. Nerses the Great was the father of Catholicos Sahak I. He succeeded two catholicoi whose reigns were unexceptional, and the people were eager to return to the line of their beloved Gregory the Illuminator. Nerses was a student of St. Basil of Caesarea, one of three great Cappadocian Fathers. Nerses pontificate was the beginning of a new era. He brought the church closer to the people, rather than to royals and nobles. He convened the Council of Ashtishat that resulted in numerous laws on issues related to marriage, worship, and customs. He built many schools, hospitals, and monasteries. He sent monks to preach the Gospel throughout the country. His bold actions resulted in great displeasure by the royal family and in 373 he was reportedly poisoned by the king. His accomplishments for the spiritual and social well-being of the common people earned him the gratitude of the entire nation and the honorific Great. Khat the Bishop worked closely with St. Nerses the Great. Like Nerses he had great passion for social issues, especially helping the poor. Nerses entrusted most of the benevolent work of the church to Khat. He is so closely associated with St. Nerses that the church honors them on the same day. By the light of unspeakable grace of your divine knowledge you arose on the land of Armenia, merciful heavenly Father; have compassion on us who have sinned. Saint Nerses, pure in soul, from birth you were chosen to inherit the paternal lot of shepherding

16 righteously and lawfully. You adorned the Church with the laws of truth and established good order within it; through his prayers have mercy on us, O Christ. (Canon to the Holy Patriarch Nerses the Great from the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church) CONSTANTINE AND HIS MOTHER HELENA This Tuesday, June 7, the Armenian Church remembers Constantine the Great and his mother, Helena. Constantine was the first Christian emperor of Rome. In 330 he founded Constantinople as a second Rome, and considered himself to be a servant of God. He was buried amid the apostles in the basilica he founded in their honor in Constantinople. Helena followed her son in becoming a Christian and devoted her life to charitable work. She built many churches and monasteries and is believed to have played an important role in the recovery of the true cross in Golgotha. She is also believed to have helped find Christ s exact place of burial where later the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was built.
