Consider Yourselves Dead to Sin Alive to God Q1: What shall we say then? Are we to continue (pres act subj) in sin that grace might increase (aor act subj)? THE RESULT A1: May it never be! (What It Results In) THE REASONS #1 can t live (fut act (What We Know) ind) in it v2 died (aor act ind) to sin v5 as Christ was raised v3 baptized (aor pass ind) into Christ (aor pass ind) from the = baptized (aor pass ind) into His death dead thro Father s glory v4 buried with Him thro baptism so we too might walk (aor into death act subj) in newness of life v5 united with Him in likeness of His death v6 body of sin done away = united with Him in likeness of His resurrection with (aor pass subj) old self crucified (aor pass ind) with Him #2 no longer slaves (pres WHAT IS TRUE OF CHRIST IS TRUE OF ME act inf) to sin v8 if we have died (aor act ind) with Christ Why: he who has died We believe we shall also live with Him (aor act ptc) is freed (perf v9 Why: Christ, having been raised (aor pass ptc) pass ind) from sin from the dead, is never to die (pres act ind) again #3 freed (aor pass ptc) Death no longer is master over (pres act ind) Him from sin (v18,22) v10 Why: the death that He died (aor act ind) #4 became slaves (aor He died (aor act ind) to sin, once for all pass ind) of +R (v18) BUT the life that He lives (pres act ind) #5 enslaved (aor pass ptc) He lives (pres act ind) to God to God (v22) THE RESPONSIBILITY (What to do) v11 Even so you (humeis) consider (pres mid imp) yourselves to be (pres act inf) dead to sin alive (pres act ptc) to God in Christ Jesus v12 do not let sin reign (pres act imp) in your mortal bodies that you should obey (pres act inf) its lusts v13 do not go on presenting (pres act imp) your members to sin as instruments of R present (aor act imp) yourselves to God as those alive (pres act ptc) from the dead & your members as instruments of +R to God v14 Why: for sin shall not be master over (fut act ind) you, for you are (pres act ind) not under law under grace Q2: What then? Shall we sin (aor act subj) because we are (pres act ind) not under law under grace A2: May it never be! FACT: you are slaves of whom you obey The outcome determines the master of your life Only 2 kinds of slavery in this world Sin Death Obedience Righteousness BEFORE What: were (imperf act ind) slaves to sin (v17, 20) v19 presented (aor act ind) members as slaves to impurity & lawlessness further lawlessness v20 were free (imperf act ind) in regard to +R RESULT v21 benefit/fruit = shame outcome/end = death v23 wages of sin is death AFTER v17 became obedient (aor act ind) from the heart to teaching to which you were committed (aor pass ind) having been freed (aor pass ptc) from sin (v18, 22) v18 you became slaves (aor pass ind) of +R v22 enslaved (aor pass ptc) to God RESULT v22 benefit/fruit = Sanctification Outcome/end = eternal Life (free gift of God in Christ Jesus our Lord, v23)

5:18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. 5:19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. 5:20 And the Law came in that As 1. through one transgression CONDEMNATION to all men 2. through one man s disobedience The many were made sinners 3. sin reigned through death COMPARISONS Even So 1. through one act of righteousness JUSTIFICATION OF LIFE to all men 2. through the obedience of the One The many were made righteous 3. grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord the transgression might increase; Paul anticipates 3 common objections to the doctrine of Justification by Faith where sin increased, 1. It encourages sin (e.g. 3:8) because of 5:19-21 Ans: NEVER! 6:1-14 we re dead to sin alive to God grace abounded all the more, 2. It allows sin because we re not under Law (b/e of 6:14) 5:21 that, Ans: NEVER! A change in masters occurred (6:15-7:6) as sin reigned in death, 3. It makes the Law sinful (because of 7:5) Ans: NEVER! The Law reveals sin (7:7-25) even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin Q1 that grace might increase? 6:2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 6:3 A1 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him v5-7 Negative aspect Separation of +Br through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. from his sin nature 6:5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; 6:7 for he who has died is freed from sin. 6:8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 6:9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 6:10 For v8-10 Positive aspect Impartation of New Life the death that He died, He died to sin, once for all; the life that He lives, He lives to God. Dealing with Habitual Sin (6:1-14) v1-10 Positional Sanctification Justification * an act * the means * removes guilt & penalty of sin * works for us * declares us +R * furnishes the track that leads to heaven Sanctification * a work * the end * removes growth & power of sin * works in us * makes us +R * furnishes the train that leads to heaven 3:21-5:21 +R imputed to our account 6:1-8:39 +R imparted to our lives through the gift of the Holy Spirit Chapter 6: Dead to Sin Alive to God (Mechanics of the Spirit-filled Life) Chapter 7: Dead to Law (Problems in the Spirit-filled Life) Chapter 8: Alive in the Spirit (Dynamics of the Spirit-filled Life)

6:11 Even so Position / consider yourselves to be dead to sin, Principle alive to God in Christ Jesus. 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts, 6:13 do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law, under grace. 6:15 What then? Q2 A2 Shall we sin because we are not under law under grace? May it never be! as instruments of unrighteousness; 6:16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 6:18 having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. v11-14 Experiential Sanctification (MIND) Practice / Responsibility Dealing with Occasional Sin (6:15-23) v15-23 Realized Sanctification Only 2 Types of Slavery SIN OBEDIENCE DEATH +R

6:19 I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification. 6:20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 6:21 Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. 6:22 But now having been freed from sin enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, the outcome, eternal life. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

7:1 Or do you not know, brethren v1-6 The Believer & the Law (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? 7:2 For the married woman is bound by law to her husb while he is living; if her husb dies, she is released from the law concerning the husb. 7:3 So then if, while her husb is living, she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; if her husb dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress, though she is joined to another man. 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, that we might bear fruit for God. 7:5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. 7:6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit not in oldness of the letter. The Conflict in Sanctification (Chapter 7) v1-6 The Believer & the Law v7-13 The Law & Sin v14-25 The Believer & Sin
