1 - 2 - Parish Council The Parish Council welcomes back all our church organizations who resumed their activities last month after a summer break. Saturday School and Sunday School opened and the Ladies Society, Men s Forum and ACYO held meetings last month. There are a number of activities coming up in our parish, many of which are more fully described in this issue of the Dajar. Here is a sampling of some of the events coming up: Ladies Society will hold its annual Bingo and Burgers on Friday, October 20 ACYO will hold its second Paint Night on Saturday, October 21 Ladies Society bus trip to St. Leon Cathedral for the Pontifical Divine Liturgy Sunday, October 29 Our fundraiser, an all you can eat Prime Rib Feed, on Saturday, November th Anniversary Celebration of the establishment of our Saturday School, on December 9 We will have two high ranking clergy of the Armenian Church celebrating the Divine Liturgy in November: His Grace, Bishop Moushegh Babayan, will celebrate the Divine Liturgy on November 5. Bishop Babayan is the Operations Director of the Holy See of Etchmiadzin and will be in California during the Pontifical Visit of His Holiness, Karekin II. His Grace, Archbishop Barkev Martirosyan, will celebrate the Divine Liturgy on November 12. He is Ladies Society The Ladies Society will hold their next Dinner Meeting on Wednesday, October 11, at 6:30 p.m., at St. Paul Armenian Church Haig Berberian Hall. Join the ladies for dinner, devotional and interesting program. The dinner is $14 per person. Make reservations by calling Gaila Peloian at or send an to g.peloian@gmail.com. The Central Council Ladies Society will visit the Central region at St. Mary Armenian Church in Yettem on Tuesday, October 17. The church service will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch at noon and program from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. If you would like to attend, make your reservations to Darlene Chardukian by calling her at or her at ochardar@comcast.net. Bingo and Burgers will take place on Friday, October 20, at 6:30 p.m. Join the ladies for a night of delicious food, fun, fellowship, cash prizes, candy, and snacks. the Primate of Artsakh, which is one of the largest dioceses of the Armenian Apostolic Church, covering the independent Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. Archbishop Martirosyan will also give a presentation, after church services, on the current situation in his region. The Parish Council augmented individual donations received for hurricane and earthquake relief and transmitted $1,000 to the Western Diocese to be included in the Diocesan donation to the Red Cross relief effort. St. Paul congratulates our neighbor, Pilgrim Armenian Congregational Church, on the installation of its new pastor, Rev. Nerces Balabanian. We have received a donation to purchase new choir robes. The donation is large enough to also fit our altar servers with new robes. We are currently in the process of selecting designs and colors. It s hard to believe that the end of our fiscal year is coming up in just two months. We encourage all our parishioners who have not made their annual pledge to do so by the end of November, or, for those who have made a pledge, to complete it. Our pledge income is the single most important source of revenue to cover our operating expenses. Thank you to all who are supporting our church. We hope that our painting project will be underway soon and will be reviewing bids and color schemes. Our plan is to paint all the exterior doors and stucco around the entire church complex. Please make your reservations by Friday, October 13 to Alberta Bedoian. For more details turn to page 6. The ladies are sponsoring a pilgrimage bus trip to the Western Diocese on Sunday, October 29, to participate in the Divine Liturgy celebrated by his Holiness of all Armenians, Catholicos Karekin II. The bus will leave the St. Paul Church parking lot promptly at 5:30 a.m. See the detailed flyer on page 11. The next visit to the Evangel Home will take place on Sunday, November 5. Everyone is welcome to join the ladies as they attend the home and deliver donations. Donations can include toiletries, toys and non-perishable food items. For any questions, contact Tracy Beberian. 2 - 3 - Sunday School The first day of the 2017/2018 Sunday School year was Sunday, September 10 th. It was a beautiful day with 20 students in attendance to register and meet their teachers as well as attend church services and enjoy Antasdan in celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. We had our first and second lessons, respectively, on Sunday, September 17 th and Sunday, September 24 th with 30 wonderful students in attendance on both Sundays. The first lesson focused on God and his creation of the world and for all of us to be good, responsible stewards. The second lesson focused on our commitment to our families as well as our Armenian church family. Following are Sunday School events for the month of October: Sunday, October 1: Communion Sunday and Church Attendance together with Sunday School family following Sunday School Assembly. Sunday, October 8: Regular Assembly and Class Lessons. Sunday, October 15: Meal and Family Fun Time after Regular Assembly and Class Lessons. Please contact Anton. Sunday, October 22: Sunday School Fellowship. Please bring edible treats/cookies and kindly help plate and serve goodies to our fellow parishioners. 3 ADMIT ONE Men s Forum The September 20 th Men s Forum Dinner-Meeting was another special night for all members and guests in attendance. Although attempts were made to lessen the burden on the semi-retired kitchen committee by catering a tasty lulu kebab dinner from Mediterranean Restaurant, the core group of Bob Der Matoian, Russell Adams and Jerry Mootafian were still kept busy preparing plates and serving the tables. Once again, guest speaker for the evening was a favorite local historian, lecturer, op-ed writer and novelist, Gary Wayne Walker. This was his fourth appearance with Men s Forum as he featured an enlightening and entertaining power-point presentation on two American heroes from the 1920 s: legendary baseball player, Babe Ruth, and aviation hero, Charles A. Lindberg. Mr. Walker revealed several interesting and little-known facts about these famous American legends from the past. It should be noted that Mr. Walker s friend and fellow author, Tom Morton, was on hand to video-tape the presentation for future viewing on You tube. A debt of gratitude is extended to Anton Kismetian, who made the presentation possible by making a quick trip to the nearby Target Store to get a special adaptor required for the presentation. Senior ACYO The Senior ACYO has been busy planning their second annual paint night for the past several weeks. They have worked very hard each Sunday selling tickets to parishioners during fellowship as well as to their families, friends, and community members. Everyone is very excited and looking forward to this event! Last year, there were over 110 attendees and the hope is to have as many and more this year. There has been a change of date for the Paint Night event from October 6 to October 21 as the Senior ACYO wants to give everyone the opportunity to attend this event. All community organizations and church chapters are welcome to attend. Pre-sale tickets are on sale now for $20 and tickets will be sold at the door for $25. The cost includes canvases, paints, brushes, snacks, and beverages. An artist will lead the evening with step by step instructions for the entire group as everyone creates their own beautiful painting. The Seniors are scheduled to have their next General Meeting on Friday, October 13, at 6:00 p.m. in Room 4 at church. Following the meeting, they plan to organize and clean the ACYO storage room in the Berberian Hall. Anyone is welcome to come and be a part of this motivated Armenian Church Youth Organization. All members are encouraged to bring friends with them as well. During the month of November, the Seniors plan to give back to community by volunteering either at the Member Ed Kaye announced that he, along with member Mike Kilijian and parishioner Bart Hagopian, will be part of the Central Valley Honor Flight delegation that will travel to Washington D.C. in early October. This worthwhile program allows local veterans to visit the National memorials of World War II, Korea, and Southeast Asia at our Nation s Capital. have plenty to talk about upon their return. Mike Kilijian announced the Fowler Men s Forum is scheduled to host their annual Five Church Men s Dinner in October. The date and details for this event will be announced in a forthcoming flyer to go out in early October. Due to this event, our next regular Dinner- Meeting will be Wednesday, November 15 and the next Men s Forum Sunday fellowship will be on October 8. California Armenian Home or Poverello House.
